Salvatore piles interminable grisly action upon nefarious conniving, centering Honce's only hope on the Bear, Laird Bannagran, whose courage in battle and "some measure of honor" at last give Bransen a new sense of purpose and Honce, the decent rulers its suffering people deserve. This long fable of good and evil, spiked with blood-and-guts combat, closes the series with a hint at generational continuation--though readers may find new permutations of his faux medieval sex-and-violence hard to digest. In this fifth volume of the Corona saga, the war in Honce has brought Yelinik the Fool to the throne. He has promptly started killing everybody who looks cross-eyed at him. This drives Dame Gwindre and Father Artolivan to seek an alliance with Laird Ethelbet, although he is at blood feud with their friend Bransen Gaibond. He in turn washes his hands of them (for now) and seeks alliance with one of his old enemies, the dark mage known as the Bear of Honce. All of this shifting of alliances at a breakneck pace may slightly confuse new readers, but followers from the beginning will enjoy themselves. Salvatore’s career has already taken him from entertaining game-related fantasy to state-of-the-art high fantasy and he hasn’t even finished this saga! --Roland Green

Good but a little lackluster

I'm not going to write what the book is about because if you should already know from the other books in the series. However, I will tell you what I thought about the book itself as compared to the others.

I thought The Ancient was the best in the series. Great storyline, plenty of action and a great ending. The second book, The Dame, was more of a political book than an action one with action sequences few and far between. The character development was very good and it was a good read.

The Bear continues exactly where The Dame left off. It is even more of a political book than the previous two. Some of the main characters from the first two books are almost completely left out and take a sidestep to other characters. Some of it came off as if Salvatore got bored with a few of the characters and decided to disregard them. While the story still prominently features Bransen Garibond, the other main characters from The Ancient might as well have not been in this book at all and are certainly not pertinent to the story, with the exception of Gwydre obviously. That part was a bit disappointing.

Without giving anything away, I also felt that the ending came off as very rushed. I got the feeling that Salvatore hit a deadline and needed to get started on his next book. The ending was very rushed and some scenes came off as if he just needed to end it quickly. It cheapened the series for me quite a bit.

If you've read the other books in this series, then of course, this book is a must read and certain parts of it are highly enjoyable. But, all in all, the ending came off as very rushed. Is it worth reading? Yes. Could it have been a bit better? Yes.

Fantastic fiction from the world of Corona

The Bear gives us Salvatore's latest story from his epic fantasy world of Corona, the last tale in his Saga of the First King.

War continues to rage across the nation of Honce, with two lairds and one dame vying for a single throne controlling all the independent-minded territories. Ethelbert in his southern city and his ties to the Middle Eastern-flavored nation of Behr, Yselnik the coward with little true fire for anything but undeserved power, and Gwydre of the northern territory of Vanguard. These three vie for control of the nation's fate, but there are other lairds with designs on power. Milwellis and his father Panlamaris of Palmaristown harbor their own desires and hatreds, unwilling to accept one leader but able to compromise with another for political expedience. The Abellican Church, such a prominent figure in the original series in this world, also plays a part, having insisted on neutrality early in the war and being labelled as cowards and traitors by the various powers.

The Bear takes up exactly where The Dame (the prior book in the series) left off. The heroic Highwayman, defiant of all sides and wanting independence for himself and his family more than anything, has lost his legacy and his heart and has only despair. He encounters evidence of the brutality of war, visited by both sides upon all in their path including innocent children, and finds a renewed disgust for the warring factions and the consequences suffered by the innocent peasants. Ignoring his own sense, he is captured by one who previously spared his life, the Laird Bannagran (which readers of the series might hopefully have recognized his nickname, The Bear, as significant in the conflict since the books set in future of Corona name the nation as Honce-the-Bear, not just Honce...) a cruel and brutal fighter with a peculiar sense of honor. Seeking safety for his family and vengeance upon those who defeated him in the closing of The Dame, Bransen the Highwayman compromises and joins Bannagran, in turn serving under Yselnik. Both the would-be king and the Highwayman hate one another with fervent passion.

The Church is under siege by the forces of Palmaristown for their refusal to bend their knee to Yselnik. The formidable monks repelled the troops' assault in The Dame, but now they are further cut off and siege engines are being constructed to crack open the protective shell of St. Mere Abelle.

Don't forget the powries, who launched a stealthy nighttime assault on Palmaris in The Dame. The powries escalate their part in the conflict after the treatment of powrie prisoners by the Palmaris garrison, seeking and offering no quarter to any humans on any side. The blame for the powrie assault is laid by Laird Panlamaris at the feet of Dame Gwydre, cementing his desire to kill her and the monks with whom she shelters in St. Mere Abelle. Gwydre, cut off from her people in Vanguard, has dispatched a team to negotiate with Ethelbert to oppose Yselnik in exchange for her Queenship.

Alliances of convenience seem to be the primary feature of this book, with so many being seemingly in opposition to the established character beliefs and behaviors. That they are so willing to forego their path shows the powerful effect of the war upon the rulers as well as the peasants, seeking primarily an end to the death and misery even at the expense of their pride.

Salvatore excels again with his plotting and especially with the dynamic fight scenes. However, this book does not give much new to the series that readers have not seen before. Aside from the about faces that so many of the characters make in regards to their alliances, the story reads much the same as prior books in the series. As the prior books in the Saga of the First King, the land of Honce is much more brutal and unforgiving than in the initial series on Corona, but the underlying means of survival and success are the same. This is a great book and a wonderful capstone to the Saga, but it's not as great as some of Salvatore's earlier efforts in this world of his creation.

deep political fantasy

Honce has been at war for years as two rivals battle for the throne with each indifferent to the plight of peasants trapped in the deadly combat. Self-anointed King Yeslnik the Fool flourishes on blood and guts from the unmerciful war while his chief opponent Laird Ethelbert is perhaps slightly less inclined towards violence causing collateral damage.

Yeslnik's other major opposition comes from Dame Gwydre of Vanguard, who cares about the people, but is somewhat helpless as she is trapped inside the Church of St. Mere Abelle with the mystic monks; though due to magic jewels and the swordsmen, they are safe. She considers an alliance with Ethelbert, whom she deems is the lesser of two evils, but his assassins murdered Jameston Sequin and attempted to kill Bransen Garibond the Highwayman.

Bransen opts out as he is bone wary of war. He intends to takes his pregnant wife and leaves but he meets Gwydre who tries to help the beleaguered people. Instead of vanishing, he escorts her to meet the king's general Bannagran, the Bear of Honce to see if between them they can bring peace.

The final tale in the epic First King saga (see The Highwayman, The Ancient and The Dame) is a rousing winner as R.A. Salvatore continues to effortlessly blend magic and medieval type warfare inside an action-packed military-political fantasy. The key cast is powerfully drawn as betrayal and expedient shifting alliances between enemies is the norm. This series is one of the best over the past few years because of the deep look at political fantasy in a kingdom at constant civil war.

About the Author
W. MICHAEL GEAR, who holds a master's degree in archaeology, has worked as a professional archaeologist since 1978. He is currently principal investigator for Wind River Archaeological Consultants.

The Great Mississippian Peoples

It'd been years since I last read a volume in this series, but I am glad I renewed my interest in these novels, because People of the Weeping Eye is one of the best books the Gears have published so far. I liked the fact it is set in more historically recent times (the books that took place during the ice age or even the so-called archaic period sometimes felt too removed to be relevant) and loved the tie-ins to Aztecan and other contemporaneous cultures who shared the hemisphere with the mound building Mississippians. As always, the authors of the series have brought an underlying genre into the story itself, and while I won't give away what that was this time, I will say it was not a murder mystery, like Peoples of the Mist, nor a quest tale, such as Peoples of the Lakes, nor a cautionary tale, as was Peoples of the River. Peoples of the Weeping Eye is something altogether unique among these works.

This series brings the gift of truly leading a reader out into contemplation of the American landscape as it was in pre-Columbian times. Far from being primitives or (God forbid) savages, the titular First Americans as described were intelligent, articulate men and women who dwelled in societies every bit as intricately organized and colorful as our own. These were humans a present-day individual could respect, people who thrived amid challenges few of us, denizens of a softer age, could overcome. There is one flaw I've always been annoyed with about the First Americans series, though, and that is how the authors tend to deviate from strict realism and bring in elements of mystical fantasy: spellcasting, visionaries, out of body travel, etc. I guess others enjoy that and the authors are of course free to do as they want with their own material, but I always wished they'd stick to a more straightforward anthropological tale. As I read about past cultures I like to think of the events "that could really have happened" and at times I've been unable to when something obviously supernatural intruded into the plotline.

All in all this is both an enjoyable novel and a sound addition to a series that's been out there for about twenty years now. With its storylines about civilization(s) and trade across the North American landscape, People of the Weeping Eye is a fine investment of an evening's reading time.

superb ancient North American thriller

Almost a millennium ago, an advanced civilization existed on what is now the Moundsville section of Alabama. Split Sky City had one thousand inhabitants with giant palisades and mounds built as a gate to protect the citizens. Like suburbs, additional villages were located nearby along the river and occasionally one tribe conquered another. Alligator Town has been attacked and the Chief Clan of the Sky People avenges them with a daring raid.

While this is transpiring, Trader, who left the city after killing his brother, also left behind the woman he loves. He becomes a Trader journeying far and wide seeing things few men have ever observed. In one village, he hits the mother lode of copper, and meets Old White also known as Seeker. Old White also left the city under a cloud; he too became a Trader reaching the Aztec Civilization in the south and the icy tundra in the north. His dreams led him to Two Petals, a powerful mystic, who sees and acts the opposite way of most people. Seeker is going home with Two Petals to redress an old wrong. Trader joins them because the Power moves him to help prevent a catastrophe from happening.

This book ends with a cliffhanger as the tale of Trader, Seeker, and Two Petals will continue in the next First North Americans saga People of the Thunder. Once again the Gears bring alive an ancient North American civilization this time showing somewhat how the Moundsville tribes and the people near the head of the Mississippi lived based on archaeological historical information. The research is impeccable but does not overwhelm the story as the key characters are superbly developed especially when they undergo trials and tribulations. Although no climax occurs, fans of the series and those of Jean Auel will relish the vivid details of the PEOPLE OF THE WEEPING EYE.

Intriguing

The Gears write top rate prehistoric fiction out doing Auel 200%. I have read every North American novel published by the Gears and all are extraordinary. I live close to prehistoric mounds and this book gave me an idea to the people I have wondered so much about. It took me a second to sort and remember all the characters in this book but other than that it was interesting and full of adventure. Pay close attention to the vivid images and you can imagine the actual people and their homes and the South East in 1200AD. The Gears lay it out from herbal preparations to Indian lore to the type of food the Mound builders enjoyed. I cannot wait till People of the Thunder.

SCOTT, a former bureau chief for Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine and U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School flight test engineer graduate, served as a space communications security engineer at the National Security Agency. He coauthored Space Wars: The First Six Hours of World War III and Inside the Stealth Bomber: The B-2 Story.

COUMATOS, a former U.S. Navy test pilot, search-and-rescue helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, ship's captain, and Commodore of U.S. and coalition naval task groups, served as Director of Wargaming for U.S. Space Command. Counterspace is the second book authored by this troika of highly qualified sci-fi authors. It continues the story started in their first book, Space Wars: The first Six Hours of World War III, published in 2007. While a sequel, Counterspace serves well as a stand-alone story. The book opens in March of 2011 with North Korea launching a crude nuclear warhead into space over the Pacific Ocean. They detonate the weapon at high altitude to "fry," blind and otherwise immobilize a wide variety of space observation and communications satellites operated by the United States, other countries, and commercial entities.

The early chapters take the reader on a wild ride into the inner workings of the major U. S. space agencies, including the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the U. S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM), "and most of America's spook agencies. . ." The story of how the U. S. reacts to this provocative action by North Korea is told through the eyes of high-ranking space commanders and technicians. The authority with which the scenes are described gives the reader an insider's view of the stressful environment these senior officers function in as they scramble first to confirm that the Korean missile is not lofting a nuclear weapon at a Pacific Rim target and second to assess what damage the high altitude detonation has wreaked.

It soon develops that the military and commercial communications satellites covering the Pacific Ocean, as well as the extensive network of reconnaissance and signals intelligence satellites, have been severely degraded, leaving the U. S. with little real-time information on what was happening in the increasingly tense Pacific theater of operations. This further exacerbates tensions between the U. S. and China as the two nuclear powers jockey for position in the Pacific Rim power struggle. Officials in both governments suspect the other is using the communications and reconnaissance blackout as a screen to cover preparations for preemptive strikes.

The authors add another dose of realism by injecting Hamas terrorists from Iran into the mix, which further confuses the picture. Which enemy or enemies are attacking the U. S. and is there a connection?

War-gaming, in reality sophisticated brainstorming sessions by top-level military analysts and theoreticians, figures heavily in the evolving Counterspace drama. Experienced military strategists use these and high-powered computers to sort through myriad "what-ifs" to determine who is doing what to whom and generate effective counter-measures.

The three authors, Scott, who retired after a distinguished career with Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine; Coumatos, U. S. Navy retired and former U. S. Space Command Director of War Games, and Birnes, co-author of two New York Times best sellers, bring a combined expertise to the task of weaving the intricacies of twenty-first century defense operations into a plausible, fast-moving novel that has a cliff-hanging ending.

Frightening Real

This book is excellent!! Any real student of military affairs needs to read this book. It talks about things in a way that will open your eyes like nothing else.

It really is spell bounding in many different ways. This book is a mix of "how to" technology description with a mix of Tom Clancy like story telling. The story reads like it comes right off of CNN or some other news source. This book picks up from Space Wars by the same author last year. It continues in the same way that book went.

The book has something most people will miss. The secret ingredient says on the title page:

"Although the characters and actual events depicted in Counterspace are fiction and bear no relationship to actual person living or dead the action and weapons depicted herein are based on actual technologies and war gaming strategies used by the United States military and civilian war planners in preparation for the types of events depicted"

The book talks about things that you will not see listed anywhere else. The book talks about space plans, counter satellite capabilities, ground based satellite technologies with a sprinkling of strategy and tactics. The stories of these technologies is worth the price of the book alone. Many of these stories about the technologies will remind you of many of a UFO story you see in other sources.

The story of the book is icing on the cake. This story does communicate well how fast things in the world can go to pieces literally over night. The book has the North Koreans detonates a nuclear device in space. That explosion creates a EMP pulse that seriously damages America's space capacity. That makes America semi-blind. This blindness effects decisions. That event mixed with other events pushes the world to the brink of WWIII. The story line will get the reader thinking about how things aren't what they seem at first glance. The book also makes one think about the damage collusion among America's enemies can create.

This book is very enjoyable. It reads like a movie. In fact it would make a real good movie someday too. All people will enjoy this no matter what your background is.

Hard to find calendar

I have been using a Norman Rockwell Calendar since TV Guide use to give it out as a gift with an annul renewal subscription. When they stopped, I had to start looking for it at a store. It became a hassle over years finding the 12-month calendar because a lot of stores only carry the 16-month calendar. Since I now have Amazon Prime, I finally found it through them at a cheaper price than I would have had to pay at a store. It was exactly what I wanted.

Hugo-finalist Scalzi avoids political allegory, promoting individual compassion and honesty and downplaying patriotic loyalty—except in the case of the inscrutable Obin, hive-mind aliens whose devotion to Zoë will remind fans of the benevolent role Captain Nemo plays in Verne's Mysterious Island. Some readers may find the deus ex machina element a tad heavy-handed, but it helps keep up the momentum. (May)

A less-action-laden story line ratchets the excitement down from that of the previous books, but Scalzi's captivating blend of off-world adventure and political intrigue remains consistently engaging. The Last Colony

I have a feeling this series will one day be referred to as a "Modern-Day Sci-fi Classic". The third book in the series, "The Last Colony" has a slowed pace and a darker tone compared with the first two books. Returning the reader to the viewpoint of John Perry (The opening book's protagonist) we find Perry fighting not just one enemy, but three! A coalition of alien races hellbent on eradicating Humanity. An unseen primal force feeding on colonists like cattle. Even the Colonial Union who's darker nature not only comes to light but is greatly reinforced in this chapter of the Old Man's War saga.

An intergalactic marvel

This is the first book I have read in a long time that I could not put down until I finished it. I am glad I started it on a Friday night and do not have to worry about getting up in the morning with only three or four hours of sleep. It helps a lot if one has read the first two books in the series. It stands alone, but benefits a lot from knowing the earlier novels. The scope runs beautifully from inter-family relationships to local politics to galactic wide war. It is a new entry in my personal pantheon of sci-fi favorites.

The first in the series was great... this one? SPOILER ALERT......Very tired story, poor writing, he introduces threats that seem like they should be important and then just drops them (the indigenous life is killing people and the colony is about to go into panic and then never mentioned again)... he introduces magic tech at the end to save the day... yeah... just terrible.

One of the five components of teaching reading is phonics. MCP Plaid Phonics goes beyond consonants, blends, digraphs, and such. Those pesky irregular vowels combinations, silent letters, and rule breakers are dealt with in this wonderful book.
