Readers of the previous nine in the series will recognize familiar faces: all of the characters that have appeared before have at least walk-ons in the latest volume. While the panoply of characters and the convoluted plot give the novel a crowded feel, the action moves fast, despite some repetitive scenes. Reviewers debated the conclusion to this conclusion; most thought it an unexpected, appropriate finale, while one thought it petered out. "The Company novels have never received the accolades they deserve," noted the San Francisco Chronicle. Here's a reminder for more readers to give the series a try.

To conclude the annals of the time-traveling Company, the secrets of the Silence are finally revealed. All time lines lead to the last date of recorded history, in July 2355, after which nobody, not even those accustomed to knowing all history, knows what happens. Mendoza and her lover, superhuman Edward Bell-Fairfax, are married; his other two incarnations, Alec and Nicholas, become her children. Edward, who has always plotted world domination, changes as he is drawn into being a father, and because he and Mendoza have discovered how to be unencumbered by linear time, they have all the past to prepare for the Silence. Suleyman, the immortal Facilitator, has uncovered the secrets of Alpha-Omega, which is vital to the survival of mortal humans. The board of directors, meanwhile, terrified of what might happen after the Silence, prepares for the worst and in the process activates the AI Dr. Zeus. The enforcer Budu gathers his forces for a final strike. The climax is perfectly in character for Baker's world, and all the threads of the Company's plots are neatly woven together. The Company at the end of time

I highly recommend the Company series, if you enjoy witty, well-written, fun science fiction, ala Connie Willis (though I think Baker is the better writer). This is the eighth and final novel in the series, though there are side-books containing shorter forms.

Unlike most series, however, the publisher does not put numbers on them (e.g., "the first book in the Company series"). And you do really need to read them in order (though there are few you could skip without missing a whole lot, IMHO). Also unlike some series, the books do not recap what has gone before, really. So, beware. For your reference, here they are, with a brief subjective comment:

1 - In the Garden of Iden (The Company). Possibly the best of them all. If you don't like this one, don't waste your time on the others! This one explains the premise for the series. Start here.
2 - Sky Coyote (A Novel of the Company, Book 2). You can skip this one and not miss anything critical. It was just okay, in my opinion. If you like the Joseph character, read this one.
3 - Mendoza in Hollywood: A Company Novel (The Company) A neat book, and quite necessary to the whole.
4 - The Graveyard Game (The Company)Features Joseph and Lewis. Not really necessary, and not one of the better ones.
5 - The Life of the World to Come (The Company)Okay, I lied, the first book isn't the best one. This one is. Some people don't seem to like the Captain, but I thought he was a hoot. Who wouldn't like to have their own personal AI buddy looking out for us? Arrr.
6 - The Children of the Company (The Company)Less like a novel, and more a collection of stories/novellas, all about the bad guys. I wouldn't have minded missing this one.
7 - The Machine's Child (The Company)Though some reviews were negative about this one, I liked it. Necessary plot information here, too.
8 - The Sons of Heaven (the book in question) Finally! The answers to all are revealed, and very satisfyingly, too. Sorry to see the series end, but I'm glad to see I haven't wasted my time tracking all these books down and reading them. Which leads to another complaint about the publishers:

Why aren't these books available? The first one is very hard to find. The Science Fiction Book Club has been issuing the series in pairs, but as of right now the first two "omnibus" editions aren't available used. The last four are in print right now, issued as "Company Men" and "The Company They Keep."

As for the books themselves, I have only a few minor peeves. The author is from California, and has a background in Elizabethan England. Virtually every scene happens in one of these two locales. Gets a bit dull after 8 books. On the other hand, the authenticity of her language is wonderful in Garden of Iden.

The other peeve is that the "little people" are never explained properly. Who are they? Where did they come from? What is "the Memory"?

The bad guys (the evil immortals) are a bit cardboard, I thought. And the humans (non-immortals like you and me) of the 24th century are so pathetic it's a bit overdone. Surely it would be possible to empathize with the immortal good guys without having such simply bad enemies and simply stupid human race in need of saving. So, it could've been a deeper, more sophisticated series. As it is, the Company series is mostly a romp, and a lot of fun. I'm sorry to see it end.

too many dei ex machina can spoil the broth

As the conclusion to the Company series, of course everyone who is following the series has to read this book, and it wouldn't matter how many stars I did or didn't give it; you'd be reading it anyway. That said, I feel obliged to warn you that it is NOT a perfect ending to the series. (And, I should point out, it's not necessarily the last book ever to be written within the series - only the last events to be written about.)

A few too many people develop godlike powers here, powers that there really aren't sufficient bases for. Budu and his enforcers flawlessly revived and with all their old skills and nobility, William Randolph Hearst being more all-knowing than ever, Alec, Nicholas, and Edward all turning into omnipotent beings... it's a mess. Oh, and an AI who *is* Dr. Zeus turns up, with a total lack of logic and continuity. And Mendoza remains the simpering moron she turned into, with an overlay of maudlin traditional mother staying at home and minding the kids, which is totally ridiculous. It's not Mendoza anymore; Baker should have just invented a new character for this, two books ago.

There are several new characters, by the way, of whom my favorite is Princess Tiara Parakeet. Don't laugh; she's a true heroine.

But the book does tie up most of the loose ends, and ties up some of them with great style. The dinner party thrown by Victor, to which Labienus and Aegeus are invited, is an absolutely superb section. And it contains one of my favorite little asides in the book - there are many references to bits of culture throughout the ages, especially music. Earlier in the book, there's a point where Edward asks the Captain to play some music, and the Captain selects something from "Edward's two-hundred-and-ten volume set of the best of the Black Dyke Mills Band" which will be unfamiliar to most of you, but to those of us who have been playing band instruments and going to band competitions for years, that's a great line - and my spouse sat up and said, "Hey, I want that set!" Anyway, Victor's dinner party has music on the theme of death, starting with Mozart's "Requiem" and going on to Liszt's "Totentanz," and then,
"With the salad course came the second movement of the 'Discworld Symphony' by Brophy with its outrageous flatting bassoons for Death's recitative..."
That made me laugh out loud.

If you haven't read the previous books in the series, then all the above references to various characters make no sense. And indeed, the whole book will make no sense - you've got to have read the rest of the series first. All of it. If you've skipped anything, you'll miss part of what's going on here, and if you've skipped the previous two books, which had flaws and moments of incoherence, then you'll be even more befuddled, so, flaws and all, go back and read them first.

Okay, so I didn't like how Edward and Mendoza turned out, but I do like how Victor, Lewis, and Joseph turned out. I enjoyed the book more than not, hence 4 stars. I guess what annoyed me most was that the mortals who were smart enough to set up Dr Zeus Inc were stupid in unlikely ways - yes, I know smart people can have their blind spots, but the complete incomprehension of the mentality of the cyborgs, by the people who created them, just isn't likely and nothing Baker says here makes it feel likely. The plot device that's supposed to kill the cyborgs is a really stupid plot device. And I agree with other reviewers that the epilogue is unnecessary and pointless. I did like that the peculiar blind spots of the hill people did make sense and had continuity with what we knew about them before. And if I had to choose the hero I liked best, I'd choose not Alec/Nick/Ed, but good old Preserver Lewis, blind Homer reciting poetry as he awaits his fate.

My recommendation: put on a selection of classical music that features the Dies Irae and pour yourself a glass of Black Elysium, to best enjoy the book.

I wanted to love it--and I did, for a good part of the book

Let's start with the epilogue, shall we? Look, the last line stinks to high Heaven. It's about as bad as my pun. Worse, really. The whole page is trite, unnecessary, and too predictable to be anything but just plain bad.

God, I hate saying that. I absolutely loved Baker's Company Novels. It's just that--well, I threw the book after reading the final line.

But, hey, you see four stars beside this review, yeah? So it's not all bad, okay? You have to have read the rest of the novels to really appreciate this one-but if you have, you will laugh, cry, and scream about what the cyborgs do and go through. Amazon describes the book as "convoluted," but I really don't think that that is fair. Kage Baker has been developing a short story voice for her series for some time now, and it all works to drive the story quite well.

I thought that a couple of the side-plots (they're not so much side-plots as they are logitudinal plots leading up to a single point) dragged on a little long, and there were a couple of unnecessary author-to-reader quips, but all in all each story line was engaging and--in the end--logically played out.

Back to the ending, but before the epilogue. At first, when I realized the direction it was headed, I rolled my eyes. But it actually plays out quite well. Everything ties together, and the last two chapters were very satisfying.

A couple of notes on another's review:
I disagree that the "bad guys" were two-dimensional. If anything, they were as conflicted and hypocritical as the "good guys." Further, even though they are all ultimately held to the same degree of accountability, there was a tiered approach to their motivations and level of immorality. Plus, given the several story approach of the entire novel, all the characters were a little flat.
As for "the little people," you must be forgetting the previous novels. It's pretty clear how they came about--without spoiling anything, I'll just say that the people in the Hill start out like every other competing "human" at the beginning of time, and that the Company had its hands in their development just as much as anything else.

All in all, Sons of Heaven was a very good book, but with a very bad last page. Save yourself thirty seconds by not reading the Epilogue, and you'll close the series with a very satisfied feeling.

About the Author

Ben Bova is the author of more than a hundred works of science fact and fiction, including Able One, Leviathans of Jupiter and the Grand Tour novels, including Titan, winner of John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best novel of the year. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation in 2005, and in 2008 he won the Robert A. Heinlein Award "for his outstanding body of work in the field of literature." He is President Emeritus of the National Space Society and a past president of Science Fiction Writers of America, and a former editor of Analog and former fiction editor of Omni. As an editor, he won science fiction's Hugo Award six times. Dr. Bova's writings have predicted the Space Race of the 1960s, virtual reality, human cloning, the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars), electronic book publishing, and much more. He lives in Florida.

Good follow-up, but read Vol. 1 first.

I first picked up the original printing of the first volume of this anthology when I was a small child, around ten years old, and the first story in it ("A Martian Oddyssey") was so good that I put the book back down and didn't read the rest of it for another year because I was afraid none of the other stories in there could possibly be as good.

The second two volumes took me years to track down; II B I managed to find in a sale of discards from my school library; II A I didn't find at all until Amazon came along.

The conceit of this series is that the Science Fiction Writers of America picked the best short stories, novellas, and novels from before the Nebula Awards were commenced in 1965, and published them as a hall-of-fame anthology. Volume 1 collected the short stories and volume II (A and B) collected the novellas -- essentially, one stop volumes of all the "Nebula Emeritus" books, the sci-fi that professional SF writers of the sixties felt had most influenced and impacted them up to that point.

As such, this series is perfect for two groups of people: people who are completely ignorant of sci fi, and people who want to gain a better critical understanding of sci fi and its history as a genre. You can't find a better starting place, because these are the stories that the great modern SF writers started on, so by reading these, you'll understand more about what modern writers are doing, and you'll have the opportunity to experience the tropes first hand, from the stories that coined them, not in later knockoffs.

This particular volume has some really great stories in it, with a great deal of emotional impact. "The Martian Way" by Isaac Asimov is a great space yarn; "Earthman, Come Home" is an absolute classic; "The Machine Stops" has been amazingly influential (probably best seen lately in the movie WALL-E from Pixar) and "The Moon Moth" is unforgettably charming.

Probably the best benefit of these volumes is that they'll give you a general familiarity with the big names of Golden Age SF, so that you'll know who you like and don't and whose works you want to find more of. If I'd never read this volume, I don't know if (for example) I'd have ever read anything else by Jack Vance, and that would've been an absolute shame.

Excellent compilation - all stories

The follow up to Volume Two A, which also like this anthology, contains eleven novellas published from 1929 to 1964, is a strong selection; however in fact Volume Two B is a boomer era collection containing one tale from 1928 (close enough for government and sci fi collections), three from the forties, five from the fifties, and two from the sixties. The authors for the most part remain famous, a virtual who's who to include Asimov, Blish, Budrys, Cogswell, Forster, Pohl, Schmitz, Sherrod, Shiras, Simak, and Vance. Some of the entries like "The Martian Way", "The Midas Plague" and "The Witches of Karres" remain popular. The choices are solid as none are bad though some handle the test of time better. This reviewer especially enjoyed "Earthman Come Home by James Blish having remembered reading it in high school. The key to this anthology and its predecessor are that it is just about all story; in this case 526 pages of stories with no padding except for a brief two and half page introduction to explain the voting process. Tying up the loose ends

This is not just a finale for this trilogy, it's a satisfying conclusion to the entire Wraeththu arc. Characters you haven't even though of since the first book show up, and there are new revelations about other longtime characters that will surprise you.

Pell is still his ornery self, and he gets much more "screen time" than he's had in a while in the series.

Everything left hanging since the beginning of the series is answered here: Do you want to finally know where Wraeththu and Kamagrian come from? It's here. Do you want to know what happens when a harling is conceived by three, rather than two, hara? It's here. What of Lileem and her library? Yup, that's here too.

If the above confuses you, it's meant to. If you don't understand that, you really shouldn't read this book yet. Some books in some trilogies or series can be read as a standalone novel. While I suppose you might get some enjoyment if you tried it with this one, you'd also be immune to many of the surprises here... if you don't remember Velaxis, for instance, you're going to miss something big. Go get the Tor Omnibus book of the first trilogy (Wraeththu) and start there.

For the rest of you, though, those who want to know what Theide's been up to and whatever became of Ponclast, this conclusion does not disappoint.

Magnificent finale

Seldom you see a fantasy trilogy conclding itself in a manner so rich and satisfying. All the threads come to end in a stunning yet convincing way, and the plot unfurls in an intriguing, fascinating way. Seven years after the war on Fulminir, we witness the predicaments of three second-generation hara conceived during the fateful eventsin Shades: the proud and troubled Darquiel, growing in the far nothern realm of Olopade, the pampered and naive Loki, the favoured son of the Tigrons Calanthe and Pellaz,and the devious Geburael, son of the enemy of the Tigrons, Ponclast, andof the traitorous son of Pellaz, Abrimel. Geburael lives in the dark dimension of Thanatep with his brother Diablo, that teached him only hate and desires of revenge. The lives of Geburael, Loki and Darquiel will come at a crucial point in the magic land of Anakhai. Meanwhuile, the Kamagrian Lileem, in the realm of the Multiversal Library (in which one hears the echo of the Infinite Library of Jorge Luis Borges), will discover the very secret of the birth and meaning of Wraeththu. And even the all-powerful Thiede will have a part in this final disclosure.

Magnificently narrated, rich in details of strange and arcane realms, with charachters described in a so vivid and superbly detailed manner, that the reader will never forget them, this novel is a worthy conclusion of a trilogy that I think is no less magical and beautiful than the first Wraeththu Trilogy.

A wonderful ending

This book is one of the reasons why I love Storm Constantine's work. She manages to take everything she built up in the first two books of the trilogy, and bring it all together. There's no stretching the text or trying desperately to fill pages; the pacing is wonderful, and it's a page turner right to the end.

And it gets complex! All the hints from the first book, as well as some from the original Wraeththu trilogy, are brought together here in a plot that's more bizarre and fascinating than I'd imagined. Ancient angelic lore, occultism and interplanar travel are featured as Wraeththu work through a truly monumental period of growth in their history. The story is full of suspense, with an incredibly satisfying ending.

As is Constantine's style, we get to see some really interesting sides of various characters; I was particularly surprised to see what happened to Ponclast in this book. She has a good sense of balance for switching from one set of characters to the next, not letting us go too long without checking on everyone.

This book really brought the trilogy together, and it's going to be a favorite read of mine for years to come.

So much for sleep

David Hadberg has created an unsurpassable character in Kirk McGarvey. Book #13 contiues to develope Agent McGarvey. Buy the book, you can't go wrong. It's what you'd expect; amazing action, brain teasing complexity and a plot that will destroy your sleep cycles for weeks after you have given the book to your best friend. Buy it and continue to be amazed.

Does Kirk McGarvey ever sleep?

Does Kirk McGarvey ever sleep?
David Hagberg gets better with each new suspense novel. Able to keep his characters growing and energetic, The Expediter is simply a well written thriller that will hold your enthusiasm throughout the hectic worldwide pace. Although in his fifties and a little long in the tooth, protagonist Kirk McGarvey is able to maintain a solid presence and keep the action driving forward without a moments rest. How does he do it? Must use a lot of Viagra and V8 because he expends prodigious amount of energy in this top notch thriller.
The story centers on who and why did 2 South Korean ex-special forces snipers posing as North Korean police kill a high ranking Chinese general in Pyongyang, North Korea. The mysterious killing creates extreme tensions between China and North Korea that appears to be heading for all out nuclear war between not only them but the entire Far East. Enter the indomitable ex-Director of the CIA Kirk McGarvey, who is asked by a North Korean operative, with the approval of Dear Leader Kim Jong-Il, to convince China that North Korea had nothing to do with the assassination. And the story takes off at a dizzying pace, as the two Asian nations inch closer to nuclear war. Lots of action and interaction between good guys, bad guys, politicians, state leaders, family, friends, and whoever else Mr. Hagberg can throw into the bubbling international pot of intrigue.
Continued good character development both from the usual cast of Hagberg characters plus new plot characters. Excellent historical reference and associated development.
Some violence but not excessive. No gratuitous sex or language.
Hearty recommend if you like international suspense thrillers. Mr. Hagberg is a good solid writer who knows how to develop his characters and story to their fullest potential. From the excellent ending, there can be no doubt where the next Kirk McGarvey book is going. I just hope that Kirk is not too long in the tooth to take us there.

Saving the world as we know it yet AGAIN! Kirk ROCKS...

There are only so many sure bets in life...death, taxes and a David Hagberg thriller. 'The Expediter' is NO exception to Mr. Hagberg's impressive and growing collection of action/adventure novels. I've often said that Kirk McGarvey could wipe the floor with Jack Bauer, Indiana Jones, Dirk Pitt and any other number of action heroes--and do it smarter, too. This book only helped solidify my belief.

The way David Hagberg has an absolute CLEAR understanding of the world, it's leaders and potential/catastrophic possibilities we have/could/will face is absolutely weird. My first recollection of Osama Bin Laden was reading about him in 'Joshua's Hammer'...and man was that a hum dinger of a McGarvey tale! As of late, one of the main countries at the forefront of political unrest is North Korea, led by the difficult-to-define, Kim Jong (mentally) Il. You would think the LAST thing on anyone's mind is how do we help solve a potential world-class incident brewing between North Korea and China...however Mr. Hagberg once again rips a page out of a future edition of USA Today and tells us what MAY (or possibly WILL) happen if this type of situation sees the light of day (let us pray it never does).

Did North Korea plan and carry out an assassination of a Chinese General? And if not, WHO is responsible for this act and better yet, how can they prove it before a nuclear meltdown results between the two increasingly unstable countries? Getting Kirk to agree to this whole operation was some pretty good storytelling right there, but thankfully, Hagberg made the rest of the novel good as well.

What can I say that hasn't been said before about McGarvey? Without a doubt he is my #1 favorite action/adventure spy in print. I wonder just how much more Kirk can take, leading me to wonder how many more novels we'll get to see featuring him, but that's okay, I'm sure when Mr. Hagberg finally decides to lay him to rest his endless well of creativity will give us someone equally as entertaining to enjoy...although if I can be honest, I am NOT looking forward to it.

Long live Kirk McGarvey!

After she offs a sleazebag in self-defense, though, they try to put her on the next flight back to the States. She eludes them by ducking into subterranean Edinburgh, from which she’s abducted to Faerie, where Douglas is now malevolent, absolute lord. Meanwhile, the third Stewart sib, psychologically derailed Iraq vet Scott, mysteriously acquires a foundling whom he must protect against hordes of Faerie beasties. The family finally rendezvouses in Faerie, and Doug surrenders his powers to the baby. None of the clan is off Faerie’s hook yet, however; expect further books about their exploits. Stemple’s magnificent first novel, Singer of Souls (2005), arguably didn’t need a sequel at all. enchanting fantasy

Douglas Stewart went to Scotland and through a series of circumstances (see SINGER OF SOULS) becomes the ruler of Faerie. His magic puts the rightful queen Aine in a magical stasis. The prophecy says his son will kill him so he is prepared to kill the child but his loyal retainer Martes has him taken away and he is left at the door of Douglas' brother Scott.

Scott was injured and now sees visions of the future but he doesn't know the child he takes in is his nephew. He takes care of him and loves him and the brownies and hobs watch over the house because there are two magical beings who want the baby; one to drink his blood and inhale his soul while the other wants to eat his flesh.

The third Stewart sibling Bridie is looking for Douglas who the police believed killed his grandmother and a priest. Bridie is positive he is innocent but when she crosses over into Fairie she finds a cruel Douglas who reigns with an iron fist. When the three siblings meet, the fates of the trio will be decided depending on the choices Douglas makes.

This sequel picks up where SINGER OF SOULS leaves off and concentrates mostly on Scott and Bridie with Douglas making only brief appearances. This fantasy is enchanting, spellbinding and readers will finish it in one sitting to find out what happens to the three siblings and the baby. The audience will admire Scott as he comes to recognize he is a precognitive and his love for his nephew heals his mind and lets him accept what he has became.

Enjoyable ride

I found Adam Stemple's new series at the library. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his smooth prose and storyline. Steward of Song continues the story started in book one, Singer of Souls. It truly is a series, so don't read this one if you haven't read Singer.

The story follows Scott and Bridie Stewart. Scott is a recovering veteran, living quietly in rural Massachusetts. One night, a baby is left at his door and his whole world turns upside down. Meanwhile, his sister Bridie is in Scotland searching for their missing brother Douglas (Singer of Souls) who's been accused of a terrible crime.

Stemple does a nice job of combining modern life with the world of myth and fairy. However, unlike some fantasy authors, his mythical creatures are not always "good." Humanity may interact with their world but other forces motivate it.

Be warned that the book's ending, while not a cliff-hanger, is not a true ending. The action pauses but more adventures are waiting in the wings. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this unique series.

Unexpected and interesting follow up to the first book

I cracked this book with the expectation of high adventure and lots of fey magic. It was not what I expected at all. I was anticipating Douglas riding a magic horse and blasting things with his eldritch powers.

Like Adam's first book, my anticipated week or so of reading was shortened to two and a half days. I couldn't put this one down either.

Douglas's sister Bridie and her work with the Scottish police added an interesting and mundane side to the story. I wish I had seen the talking to the officers got when they let her go.

As Catscradle mentioned in their review, the ending was not a hard ending. It seemed like more of a beginning. I want some more adventures of the busker who became the ruler of Faerie.

The lists are just random words thrown together

I absolutely hate this series. I began home schooling two years ago, and in my excitement I bought the entire series all at once (I have several children of all ages.) When I opened up the books and flipped through the pages, I saw that there was NO rhyme or reason to the lists. They didn't focus on groups of words, there were no themes, nothing. The lists were completely random! Not only that, but there were super easy words thrown together with much more difficult words, all in the same list. I tried to like this series. I tried to get my kids to do them, as "dutiful" home schoolers. But they hated them, I hated them, and they sat on my shelf for two years, nearly untouched. Yesterday, I threw away every single one of the books. I couldn't try to give these pathetic excuses for spelling books off on anyone else. Today a home schooling mother friend of mine was telling me how much their family hated their spelling workbooks, and they were the same series that I had thrown away the day before. I told her what I had done, but she can make her own decisions.

WHAT I DO LIKE IS "Phonics Pathways: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling." This book starts out at the very beginning, and progresses through to advanced words. I first taught my 3rd grader how to read, and now I'm going back through the book and teaching him how to spell (I also use "spelling time" to perfect hand writing/penmanship). I also hated, "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons." This book, Phonics Pathways, is a perfect book to teach reading AND spelling for children, adults, and ESL students - all in one book. Just keep the length of the sessions appropriate to the attention span of the student. If you want a list of words to work on, then take the misspelled words from your child's creative writing pieces.

For several years we have been using this series of spelling books for homeschooling our two little girls and we are very satisfied with the results. Lessons are well laid out and the vocabulary is easy and relevant. Highly recommended.

Consider 'ordering up' a level for strong spellers?

My daughter (5th grade) really likes the exercises in these workbooks. I like the mixture of activities, for example: reading excerpts about a variety of topics that incorporate the spelling words, analogy work (like one might see on an SAT but at a kid's level), vocab matching, crosswords, editing exercises, etc.! The activities vary from week to week. The one downside we have experienced is that because my daughter is a strong speller, she is only finding difficulty with maybe one word at the most per week. We started with this one, Level E (which I think is appropriate for most 5th graders, per reviews I had read before purchasing) but quickly ordered Level F when I realized even starting multiple lessons in was not going to challenge her. This doesn't mean she knows all of the related DEFINITIONS to all the words, so it might be worthwhile for that reason… but as far as spelling exercises go, if you have a child that demonstrates strong spelling capabilities, you might want to 'order up' a level! Just my own personal experience. Someone recently shared with me that perhaps moving from 'Spelling' as a subject to 'Vocab' as a subject would be helpful at this point. Working on vocab, students still become familiar with the spelling of new words. We are still working on Level F for this year but I may start weaving in a vocab curriculum and make the switch next year. Hope this helps!
