For the avid Halo fan only

This is a pretty good book in the Halo series. The pace is slow until about 1/2 way in, and then things start picking up. The first half of the novel is literally about the main characters walking across Halo.... then things get interesting.

I would NOT suggest this book if you have not read Cryptum, and I would NOT suggest reading it if you are not that into the extended fiction. This series does NOT feature the Covenant or UNSC, but the earlier factions (forrunner, ancient humans, flood). It is not paced like The Fall of Reach, or Ghosts of Onyx. Therefore, it may not be enjoyable because this series is building the set for Halo 4 - not any of the previous games and some people fail to realize that.

If you are looking for more "Halo 2-3" style stories, you should read Halo: Evolutions.

A hit-and-miss entry that definitely differs from the first book in the series

Wow, what a surprise this book has been. I came in expecting it to be the darker middle entry in a trilogy that would ultimately have a tragic-but-hopeful ending. This book is not that. It is dark to be sure, but in many ways, this hardly feels in any way like a sequel to Cryptum. The only thing that even reminds me that this is related to that book is that some characters reappear, and that it takes place on a Halo, but that's about it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there's no doubt this book suffers a bit more than the first, despite its strengths.

This book takes place starting at an event roughly two-thirds of the way through Cryptum, when everyone has been captured by the Master Builder. Somehow, Chakas and Riser have been misplaced in a chaotic situation and end up on a rogue Halo installation, now under the control of the mysterious Primordial and the rampant AI Mendicant Bias. The story is told through Chakas' viewpoint, and chronicles his journey alongside companions new and old across the surface of this great ringworld, in excruciating detail. It's a VERY interesting story and quite compelling at times. There are tons of genuinely fascinating concepts, ideas, events, and characters dotting the landscape of this story. The actual events and revelations are truly great and some are even moving. It's not perfect though. Characters' moods and emotions will sometimes change on a dime for seemingly no reason, and it feels at times like there's little genuine character development, which is a shame after Cryptum did such a good job at that.

Much like Cryptum, Bear really captures the essence of the main character, and his viewpoint of the world becomes our own in the story. Because of that though, I find that the story in Primordium has almost no structure. The perspective is firmly focused on Chakas, what happens to him, and what he thinks about everything happening, but the narrative of the book never has any structure that really tells you what is happening in the overall "Forerunner Trilogy" big picture. You have to figure it out yourself in many parts. The characters have no destination in mind, are confused for most of the book as to what to do or where to go, and trust me, you'll share those feelings of confusion and uncertainty. I'm not sure if that was a purposeful narrative decision by Greg Bear, and I'm also not certain of whether or not it's a good thing. When you add in the ancestral imprints by the Librarian, who are practically characters unto themselves, and you've got another layer of complication. Another side-effect of seeing the world through Chakas' eyes is that, because pretty much everything outside of Earth is foreign and mysterious to Chakas, descriptions of almost everything are really confusing and nonsensical. Bornstellar at least understood what Forerunner tech was and how it worked and so did we as readers, even if we didn't understand all of its inner-workings, we at could at least understand what function it had and what it did. Chakas has no clue as to even that, so encounters with, for example, Forerunner cities or transport trains on Halo, are confusing to even figure out how to imagine what it looks like in our minds.

I find that this book suffers from the issues that Cryptum had, but much, much more so. Many of the important revelations in the story are buried and almost lost in tons and tons of exposition that focuses on minute and completely unimportant details. It's no exaggeration to say that for every page of genuinely compelling development in the overall narrative, there's anywhere from 7-10 pages of, for narrative purposes, useless information that merely extends the story's mass. Tons of effort went into describing minute details of every landscape they came across, the smallest details of landmarks such as a tree or a structure, and things like that. Then, huge moments, such as encounters with the Primordial or Mendicant Bias, flash by in just a few pages. Thankfully, all of the exposition is still focused on fascinating things, such as the Halo's landscape and innerworkings, as well as the countless people all inhabiting the Halo. Even if it is "fluff," it's still pretty interesting to take in. Personally, I don't mind more pensive, meandering novels (I loved Xenocide, which was much the same way) and so I liked most of Primordium myself despite all the "fluff." I can't deny that this book definitely has a ton of build-ups without enough pay-off to justify it though, and sometimes the overall narrative gets buried by all the fluff. Really, all of the pivotal information could be condensed into a short-story ranging anywhere from 100-180 pages and still be good. Who knows?

This book is genuinely compelling, its overall story is quite interesting if not confusing to patch together at times, and has a lot of interesting revelations at a pivotal, but small event in the Forerunner-Flood war.Personally, I found it hard to put the book down a lot of the time, but after finishing it, I recognize its flaws and some can be glaring. There's a lot of mind-blowing revelations in this book, and some of the pay-offs, while not given nearly as much page-space as the build ups, are truly spectacular. I just find that this book is not as good as Cryptum. I understand that Bear was given strict instructions by 343 Industries about what details to include to give us tantalizing hints at what's to come in Halo 4, but also plenty of details to exclude, so as to keep Halo 4 surprising and compelling when we finally play it. I understand that, but sometimes in the name of keeping on this strict narrative schedule, this book suffered a bit. Silentium seems poised to answer all questions that the first two books left unanswered (released a couple months after Halo 4 of course. Gotta keep that schedule. :P). It was hard for me to rate this book, but despite its problems, I enjoyed it. If you are a massive Halo fan like I am, then this is a good book to get, but it will also take some effort to get into and understand, not to mention patience to keep up with it. I hope that helps. Gripping look into Humanity's past and ties to the Forerunners

Primordium picks up soon after the events of the first book. Much of the first book detailed the Forerunner culture and its inner workings. In the second book we follow Chakas, a supporting human character from book 1. Chakas is stranded on a Halo ring and he journeys with some others he meets to figure out how to escape. This book details his journey and the epic revelations he uncovers.

What follows is a very enthralling story that develops Chakas as a character and reveals layer after layer of the Human/Forerunner relations and the events that have led up to book 1, Halo Cryptum.

We learn more of the war between Humans and Forerunners and get glimpses into the Flood and the mysterious Captive (from book 1) and their impact in the Universe.

This isn't an action or plot oriented book. Its about discovery and mythology. If you don't have patience for character and story then this book will probably bore you. If you are interested in the mythology of the Halo Universe then you will be delighted. Greg Bear blows the doors open and fills the Halo Universe with depth and countless possibilities.

I tore through this book eager for each bit of tantalizing mythology that would be revealed. Slowly, the world is opened up to us, not in blatant exposition but rather along side Chakas as he catches glimpses into his own genetic past the mysteries of the Flood, the Geas implanted by the Librarian, the Forerunner/Human War and war currently taking place.

This book is very important in understanding the place of Humans in this universe and definitely worth the read.

Read for an Alternate Opinion

Hear me out; everyone seems to be writing glowing reviews for this book and I am not going to be one of them. Read on though, at least try and appreciate a different viewpoint.

I have been a fan of Terry Goodkind from the start. I consider myself well read in this genre of fantasy and have bought each book the day it came out with great anticipation. The last few books have been, to say the least, mostly disappointing and have failed to capture the magic of the first few books. I kept my peace after reading them, hoping and expecting that he would come out with a book to redeem himself and set the storyline on course again. And so I eagerly awaited Phantom; Chainfire was good, not great, but good and I had hoped that Phantom would get to it again.

Not so. I have a number of issues with the book, so here they are.

First Minor Issue - Everyone is painstakingly, ravishingly beautiful. Got it Terry, no more needs to be said. If I read one more time how beautiful and heartbreakingly gorgeous (but deadly at the same time) that Nicci is, I will scream. Or put down the book and be very upset.

First Major Issue - Life is sacred. Got it. No really, I get IT! I am tired of the pedantic drivel that spouts out of Richard (and now other characters) at will. I thought Faith of the Fallen was a monumental piece of work, that was the truly last excellent, innovative and thought provoking book Goodkind wrote. In trying to continue to tirelessly hammer home his quasi-religious ideological "life is worth living" theology, the book really starts to lose drive. Every time Richard pauses for breath and talks to someone, I know that somewhere in the next few pages he is going to start preaching about how sacred life is and how people have the choice of living life free, blah blah blah. I can appreciate a theological tone to a fantasy novel, used correctly it can certainly be a vehicle for adding depth to literature. TG is driving it so hard though in this last few books, that it comes out as tired and fanatical - like something I would see on TV at 1:00 in the morning begging me to see the light of Jesus.

Second Major Issue - I have a guilty secret; I still enjoy when they discover new things about magic. But on top of that guilty secret is that TG is a very self serving writer and has destroyed his own credibility in the world he has created. I am tired (again) of having monumental odds placed before characters and they somehow find an obscure magical reference, are able to save the world (or the situation) and life moves on. This is not realistic. Magic in itself is not realistic! But the way in which magic is implemented and used should be realistic. Magic is not (and should not) be a catch all that can solve all problems, is the crutch in a time of need, etc. TG uses magic here as a crutch for moving the plot; he had some good plot twists in this book but whenever he seems to dig himself a hole and can't get out - Whala! A new form of magic, a new spell, a new way of looking at a thousand year old problem and Richard has his solution.

I would go on, but I won't. Overal (if you haven't read it yet) the book moved the plot forward towards a final batter/confrontation with Jagang and the end of the world (read Tarmon Gaiden), the characters rush around (it appears) aimlessly, but some grand finale is being planned. A ton of new magic is discovered, and hidden depths of the first Wizard Barracas are explored.

Interestingly enough I enjoyed the book. I was up late last night finishing it and couldn't put it down. Some of the old excitement has once again entered back into TG's work. But I felt I would be remiss if I didn't point out the glaring issues in his work. If people want to congratulate him on the best book ever written, have a ball. I hope you have an open mind when reading this, at the end of the day I am a Sword of Truth fan and have all of his books in hard cover and will continue to buy them when they come out. I think TG has some great energy and I am awaiting the last book to come out - but this does NOT excuse poor writing.

i hate to do it...

I, too, have fallen victim to Marillier's brilliant first trilogy. While I tried very hard to love this book and the first book in the Bridei Chronicles neither book has done it for me like Daughter of the Forest, etc. did. There's just no living up to it.

There is no doubt in my mind that Marillier is a fantastic writer and storyteller however, I'm not sure what genre she is trying to join. With this series she is reaching towards romance and I hate to say it, but sometimes Ana's blind devotion to a man she literally does not even know is just plain silly.

Ana is a vastly annoying character, for some reason I just had a lot of problems with her. She seemed to me prudish, prim and stuck up. I also had a very hard time with the love story between her and Drustan. So, I'm expected to believe she falls deeply and passionately in love with a man she sees for five seconds in the woods? It seems to me that Ms. Marillier has forsaken the slow, careful and beautiful storytelling of the Sevenwaters Trilogy for a formulaic, trite and conventional. I do like the way she handled the villain, Alipn. It was clear from the moment his character appeared that he was going to be the bad guy, there was no doubt about it but Marillier did manage to preserve some of his background and make you wonder what exactly his backstory was whereas with other villains, Lord Richard in Daughter of the Forest for instance, they were just bad and that was it.

Something that got on my nerves was the jumping around in the story. This is something Marillier did in both Wolfskin and especially Foxmask. The difference between those two books and the story jumping in this book is that I actually cared about all the plot lines in the latter. In The Blade of Fortriu I found myself rolling my eyes whenever the story jumped back to Bridei and Tuala and the war but then I didn't particularly care for that story when it was in its own book either. She does handle historical detail wonderfully, that's one of the reasons I finished the book. Marillier blends fantasy and fact very well and it helps that she writes about a time about which little is known.

I have high hopes for the last book in the series as Faolan was the most interesting character in this series so far. He seems to me to be the kind of hero Marillier writes best, the stoic, guarded and mysterious man who redeems himself through the love of a good woman. Hopefully in the upcoming Well of Shades, Marillier will get back to what devoted fans like myself have fallen in love with.

A bit disappointed

I am a Marillier fan, her Sevenwater Trilogy was excellent reading. I liked the first in the Bridei Trilogy, The Dark Mirror--not so much as the Sevenwaters Trilogy but I liked it enough to read this second book in the series.

Warning Spoiler:
My complaint is that the author made a huge mistake in this story -- She created a strong heroine and a strong hero --she gets the reader hooked into these two characters and then suddenly she creates another character, who the heroine suddenly falls in love with. After building the hero and heroine's characters up and the reader anticipates their devotion to eachother she gives up on the pair--she lost me--she had a great story going and then midstream she made poor choices in her plot. Perhaps she did this in order to write book three in this Trilogy? If that is the case all I can say is, "what a ripoff" --I am not going to be buying the third book in this series, if I read it --I will get it thru the library.

A love rectangle and an emasculated assassin

Blade of Fortriu is the middle volume of Juliet Marillier's The Bridei Chronicles about a Priteni king, Bridei, striving to unite his people under one rule and reestablish the old faith, which has been supplanted by Christianity in some regions. In an interesting twist, Marillier relegates heroes Bridei and his wife Tuala to supporting roles and elevates Faolan and Ana as primary characters. At first, I liked the twist, since Faolan seemed to be the most complex character in the series, especially compared to saint Bridei. However, this complexity turns out to be an illusion.

At its core, Blade of Fortriu revolves around a love triangle, one of the oldest plot points. In fact, if you account for Alpin's lust, it contains a love rectangle, perhaps the first novel I have read with such geometry. Unfortunately, the romance emasculates Faolaon when it should strengthen him. Numerous times in the book, he contemplates performing selfish acts but restrains himself: Why? If he were more selfish, making a mess of things that he then has to repair, the novel would have been more engaging.

The Dark Mirror worked because Marillier made me care about Bridei and Tuala despite a predictable story. This approach is less effective in Blade of Fortriu because Faolan is different than Bridei, but Marillier does not embrace these differences. Instead, she portrays Faolan as a mostly good man who has been forced to make terrible choices in his past. In my opinion, a character has to act controversially in the present, on the page, to be complicated, and not in the past, where he can be excused for such actions. Making a character's history provocative is expositional and lazy, whereas making his present provocative is far more enriching. Faolan is a spy and an assassin who should take objectionable actions within the story to achieve his goals. He does not kill or deceive anyone who does not deserve it, and I believe this shortchanges his character.

This issue of character complexity also extends to the villain, who is completely despicable. The best villains have some redeemable qualities or at least understandable agendas. You won't find a sympathetic villain in this series.

The climactic showdown takes up all of a paragraph, with the villain admitting to his lies and plot just like in an Austin Powers movie. On one hand, I understand the quick climactic clash because this series does not focus on action. On the other hand, I would have liked a more substantial climax, if only so I could revel in the resolution. In general, Marillier glosses over the combat, relying on exposition to tell us how the war between Fortriu and Dalraida pans out. Marillier focuses on character and emotion instead of war and action, and while I regret the omission of vivid, visceral warfare, I cannot fault the author for abiding by her nature as a writer.

This book got me through Calculus

_I have heard this book dismissed as "just another space cadet story." Check the date of publication (1948), this is THE first space cadet story. It started the genre. I've also heard it dismissed as a "kid's book." A "kid's book" would not have stuck in my memory for four decades now and provided me with inspiration and a model when I most needed it. A "kid's book" wouldn't have inspired me to stick out high school and college physics and mathematics instead of just throwing in the towel. It was remembering the example of this book, and _Starman Jones_, that got me through Calculus. I just wish the rest of the world would have lived up to the high ideals expressed in these books....

_I recently reread this tale after many years. I was amazed at how "nondated" it was. Heinlein has a perfect description of cell phones and cell towers. Something else finally hit me too- this is where Gene Roddenbury got most of his ideas for Star Trek. Heinlein actuallly uses the term "the Federation." His Interplanetary Patrol is obviously the inspiration for Star Fleet with it's noble ideals, multi-cultural make-up (in 1948), it's commitment to keeping the peace, and it's 100 year record of keeping the peace (a phrase right out of Trek.) The importance of the Academy and its naval style of organization came from Heinlein, the Annapolis graduate. The way that the organization is entirely composed of officers and officers in training- that's also pure Star Trek. Heinlein wrote of all this almost 20 years before the television show aired....

_It used to bother me that the Heinlein that wrote this book and the Heinlein that wrote _Stranger in a Strange Land_ and all that came afterward seemed like two different men. I now think that I understand that too.

The source DNA for all of today's sci-fi

How I went so long without reading this book I'll never know. Astoundingly ahead of its time, but yet so prescient that it could have been written today.

You can't read this book without thinking of nearly anything in today's sci-fi universe: Star Trek, Thunderbirds, Babylon 5, Firefly, Halo, you name it there's hints everywhere that all come from Heinelin's seminal work.

I loved the story itself, it had great flow and a genuine sense of plotting. Enjoyable.

There might be some undiscovered gem of a short story published in 2001 that didn't make it into this impressively eclectic third annual collection, but it's hard to see how it slipped under the eagle-eyed radar of editors Gorman and Greenberg (and their deputies Larry Segriff and John Helfers, credited in the dedication as the people "who do 99 percent of the work"). The lively mix ranges from works by the usual prolific novelist suspects-S.J. Rozan, Ed McBain, Joyce Carol Oates, Jeffery Deaver, Donald E. Westlake, Ruth Rendell, Bill Pronzini, Marcia Muller, Val McDermid-to the welcome return of names (like Joseph Hansen and Clark Howard) not seen often enough on book jackets of late. Howard's story, "The California Contact," has enough rich material for a novel-including a hero who would rather be a boxer than a cop, a hit man called "the Leper" who "could not be identified by fingerprinting because all of his prints and part of several fingers had been eaten away by leprosy," and a beautifully orchestrated finale at Disneyland. Carolyn Wheat's "The Only Good Judge" offers a complicated, Hitchcockian plot, in which three villains commit each other's crimes, as well as some valuable wisdom about the erroneous image of judges as shaped by the Law & Order TV series. With seven fact-and-opinion-packed reports on the world crime fiction scene, this anthology contains enough high quality reading material to sustain any genre addict's habit.

An absolute must for all readers of crime fiction

I have recurring dreams where I'm on a rock or a raft or some sort of lifesaver in the middle of raging rapids and objects are floating by me. For some reason I feel duty bound in my dreams to grab each of the objects, like I'm a character in a video game or something. I think I'm grabbing everything, but it gradually hits me that I'm not. I usually wake up at the point where I've grabbed and missed for something I really, really need. My dream, of course, is a metaphor for books or authors I miss during the year.
It's impossible to keep up with everything that's going on in the world of literature. Even if you want to limit yourself to a particular genre, something good is going to get by you. Time is a problem, distribution is another and some time word of mouth doesn't reach its intended target. That's why those "Year's Best" anthologies are required reading, particularly in the mystery genre. There's no way to keep up with everything and, even if the market for short stories is shrinking, there are enough of them --- and they are hard enough to find --- to make it virtually impossible to keep up with all of them.
A particular favorite mystery favorite of mine is THE WORLD'S FINEST MYSTERY AND CRIME STORIES. It's only up to its third annual edition, but is already staking out a claim in the genre as being indispensable. Editorial chores are handled by Ed Gorman and Martin Greenberg, both of whom are legends in the anthology arena. Between the two of them they burrow into every cranny of the genre and come away with treasures.
THE WORLD'S FINEST is not merely a collection of short mystery and crime fiction, though it would be worth the price of admission on that basis alone. There are a number of essays included, dealing with The Year 2001 in Mystery and Crime fiction, a Yearbook, the state of the art in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Germany and Fandom. There's also a list of the ten best novels that is quite interesting, both for what is included (TOTAL RECALL by Sarah Petretsky) and what is not (what happened to THE JUDGEMENT by D.W. Buffa?). The list of course is, at least to some extent, subjective and part of the fun of it is finding one (or two or three) books you missed. And, when you're done having fun with all of that, there are the stories.
One of the joys of this anthology is finding names you know and love, while finding others you've never heard of. In the former category, there is Ed McBain with "Activity on the Flood Plain" which, on the surface, doesn't appear to belong in this collection at all. What begins as a story of a beleaguered artist dealing with a nattering nabob on a planning and zoning board takes a left turn near the conclusion. And, yeah, it definitely belongs in this volume. Jeffrey Deaver is included as well, with "Beautiful." This marks the first time I have ever been able to guess the conclusion of a Deaver work and it did not diminish my enjoyment of the story, which concerns a woman who finds an effective, if drastic way, of dealing with a stalker. Lawrence Block is represented by a thoughtful piece entitled "Speaking of Greed," a classic tale of a card game held among a very, very diverse group of gentlemen. There are also great, great stories by such well-known figures as Ruth Rendall, Max Allan Collins, Donald Westlake and Joyce Carol Oates, who is quietly demonstrating a versatility that has been under-appreciated as she demonstrates in "Tell Me You Forgive Me."
But what about the unknowns? Well, there are plenty to talk about, but I'll limit discussion to one who was a new face, at least to me. Dick Lochte is not an unknown, but I was totally unfamiliar with his work until encountering him with "In The City of Angels." Reprinted from FLESH AND BLOOD, an under-appreciated anthology of erotic mystery stories edited by Max Collins and Jeff Gelb, "In the City of Angels" combines equal parts of lust, greed and danger to create an atmospheric, contemporary Los Angeles, written the way Chandler would have if he'd have been born in the 1970s. It is the last story in THE WORLD'S FINEST and for good reason: it would have been a tough one for anyone to follow.
THE WORLD'S FINEST MYSTERY AND CRIME STORIES: Third Annual Collection is an absolute must for both the seasoned and casual reader of crime fiction. Leave plenty of time to revisit your favorite authors and to find some new ones. Very highly recommended.

powerful anthology consisting of thirty-nine tales from 2001

As usual the G and G (great goldies) team has put together a powerful anthology consisting of thirty-nine tales from 2001 that run the mystery-crime-thriller spectrum. Obviously all the inclusions have seen print elsewhere, but not under one tome before this compilation. The contributions for the most part are excellent depending on the reader's taste, but none are terrible regardless of palate. In addition three articles report on the general state of the genre during 2001 and four country specific reports (Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and Germany) furnish insight into the trends. THE WORLD'S FINEST MYSTERY AND CRIME STORIES, THIRD ANNUAL COLLECTION, VOL. 3 provides the audience with a delightful slice of some of the year's better short stories.

Not as good as other anthologies

Although the collection represents a wide spectrum of sub-genres (cozy, hardboiled, etc.) it seems that only very typical specimens of each type were chosen. It does not seem the editors looked very far and wide for stories. There are some damn fine tales in this book, but the collection as a whole is neither ground-breaking nor especially interesting. Fans of business-as-usual mystery will love it. More demanding readers who like to see the genre push the envelope a bit more will be underwhelmed.

Unfortunately, the monarch's death doesn't end the wizardry, and Garris is snatched away to fight a whole new set of battles in another universe, while his companions have to decide who shall rule in his absence. Wizardry is definitely on the march. Heck, the wizard-king even comes back to life and discovers the secret of levitation, and opposing his side are arrayed various monsters and the Green Woman, who travels about to do mischief from her citadel, the Fortress of Glass. Drake possesses every skill necessary to make this story thoroughly absorbing, even to new readers. Those who have sailed with him through the preceding two Isles trilogies ought to eagerly demand it. Roland Green

The Beginning of the End for Garric, Sharina, Ilna, Cashel & Co.

A couple of years ago, I'd been given a copy of Terry Brooks' newest book for Christmas, and my mother asked me if I liked the author's work. I answered, honestly, that I'd liked him better when he'd been writing novels, instead of trilogies.

And so it is with "The Fortress of Glass". I've enjoyed all of the books in "The Lord of the Isles" series -- admitttedly, some more than others -- but now Mr. Drake has decided to end the series with a trilogy. So where previous volumes have ended with the main action of the book largely resolved, this one ends with the characters still very much in a dangerous and complicated situation which will not be resolved until the next book comes out. Sometime next year, one presumes.

This in and of itself would not be so bad, except that "Fortress" is also a surprisingly weak offering in many ways. While all of the "Lord of the Isles" have had a certain formulaic quality to them, with -- for example -- the heroes always being split up and sent off only to reunite for the story's climax, this time there is an unpleasant repetition of events in "Mistress of the Catacombs", with Garric being sent off on a quest that takes him away from ruling the Isles in a time of crisis. And I'm probably going to have Sharina fans howling for my blood, but seeing her take his place just isn't very interesting -- she doesn't *do* anything. Then too, the two characters who are killed off in the book's climax were also killed in "Master of the Cauldron" (although that time they were brought back, which will probably not happen this time ...) which seriously diminishes the impact of that scene.

Given this weakness, maybe it's a good thing that Mr. Drake has decided to bring this series to an end ...

Hard times for the Isles

Well, things are getting (getting? they haven't been that way already?) really sticky for Prince Garric and his friends and supporters.

The saga of the Isles is winding up, with a true trilogy (to be known as The Crown of the Isles) of which this is book one. As has happened before, Garric and company are separated by wizardry, and face different problems as they go forward with their lives and efforts to save the Isles from Chaos - but instead of essentially resolving the problems presented in the adventure, being reunited at the climax of the book, and then having another one in the next book - they are brought back together, but not in the Isles, and with new problems to face as they have to deal with a new environment.

The book is complete in itself, and an excellent read (like all of Dave's material), but it cries for the next two books and a (I hope, i hope) a triumphant conclusion in which the Good Guys win and the Isles have a thousand years of peace and unity before the forces rise again (not that they will really have peace, or at least nothing but peace - after all, the isles are inhabited by people and Dave knows all too well that people seem to insist on breaking whatever peace they manage).

A good book, one anyone who has read the earlier books in the series will want for sure - and if you haven't already met and come to know and like and admire Garric, Ilna, Liane, and company, here is your chance to remedy that. Note - and I hope this ain't a spoiler - you will see some folks you like and care about fall out of the story in this book, but whether forever or not, I don't know. The next two books in the trilogy will tell that tale. And they aren't written yet (THE NEW LAND, Book Two is being written now).

The movement from the 'Lord of the Isles' series to 'The Crown of the Isles' was smooth with the only problem being the series appears to have been put on hold with this publication. The characters and the plots are only becomming more involved and deeper with each book. I want More.
