A winning historical mystery told with wit & humor

Third in the series of Shakespeare & Smythe mysteries, Simon Hawke has won me back over after my disappointment with novel number two, _The Slaying of The Shrew_. In _Much Ado About Murder_, Hawke has recaptured the sly wit and droll humor of his main characters, and writes a rather straight forward mystery that is most enjoyable. Instead of weaving a story filled with useless red herrings, he has used restraint and created a story that shows imagination and talent in it's very simplicity. A pleasant diversion told extremely well.

Much Ado About Creative License

I discovered this book at a discount bookstore, and being the Shakespeareophile that I am, I was intrigued. I was even happier to discover that "Much Ado About Murder" is just one of Hawke's books in a series of Smythe and Shakespeare mystery novels. Hawke writes this novel from the time period of Shakespeare's life, where not much is known about the poet. His novel is most definitely speculation, but it is an enjoyable read.
We are quickly introduced to Tuck Smythe, a player in the King's Men, who rooms with Shakespeare, a down-on-his-luck player, who writes some sonnets on the side to earn some money to keep himself fed. Due to their connections, these two players come into contact with various sorts - the seemingly-wealthy would-be patrons, and the band of roving apprentices who fashion themselves to be thieves. Trouble ensues for Tuck Smythe as he befriends Ben Dickens, a returning soldier who used to be a member of the King's Men. And sure enough, Shakespeare and Tuck find themselves at the heart of a murder mystery, desperately trying to clear the name of an innocent acquaintance.
Hawke's narrative is relatively quick-paced and filled with sly quips that any reader of Shakespeare will recognize. These will, of course, later become lines in the plays that Shakespeare struggles to write. In fact, Shakespeare seems to get some of his best lines from others, asking them if he could write down what they said and credit it as his own. Anyone familiar with "Much Ado About Nothing" will recognize the parallels to this novel's plot, with some inventive differences. At times, however; the narrative seems too bogged down with characters before it hits its stride about half-way through the book. Yet I look forward to reading the others in this series.

Adventures of Shakespear--detective

Symington (Tuck) Smythe and his friend Will Shakespear find that the theater business can be chancy. London's council has banned theater production and their company's tour of the countryside was largely a bust. Now, back in London, they rehearse, drink too much beer, and wait for something positive to happen. In the meantime, Tuck makes money using his blacksmith skills rather than his (dubious) theatrical ones and Shakespear writes sonets for the amusement of England's nobility (and for his own profit). In these hungry times, the apprentices of London frequently go wild, stealing, breaking heads, and generally causing problems.
A rich merchant from Genoa looks to be a godsend to the theater, but murder puts a definite damper on that plan. When a friend of Tuck and Shakespear is accused, the two must, once again, turn detective to uncover the true killer and free their friend.
Author Simon Hawke tells a charming tale. Fans of Shakespear will get a chuckle out of the way Hawke puts well known lines from the bard into the mouths of his characters--for Shakespear to adapt later in his famous plays. I found the early going to be interesting but slow--Hawke spends the first half of the book setting up the mystery, then swings into action in the second half of the book.
Hawke's London feels authentic, with dirt, wild apprentices, disease, and a sense of hope that the future may be brighter. Tuck is an interesting and sympathetic character--his love for the theater matched only by his lack of talent. MUCH ADO ABOUT MURDER is certain to generate some smiles.

Excellent thriller

A truly excellent read with a dynamite ending. Frankly, one of the best novels I have read in years. This was a book which was hard to put down. The writing is tight yet on occasion lyrically beautiful, and sometimes I found myself reading parts of it aloud to my wife. I recommend this novel highly.

Loved the way the author wove the main characters struggles with the death of her daughter and finding the lost child. This book will keep you riveted to your seat with an ending that will leave you speechless.

I did not like this book at all. I found the author's snippy descriptions of the aunt and mother of the leading character ugly. Ms. Conner came across as a woman who hates older women - something she will some day be.

The room was as large as a castle courtyard, lit by clusters of tall scented candles in each of the four corners, but the ceilings were so high that no light reached there, and looking up gave him the feeling of staring up at a dead sky, on a night without stars.Figures scurried by along the base of the walls. Their movements were soft, and although he could see only shadows, he knew that they were women.Three feather-filled cushions, each of them eight feet square, were piled atop each other in the center of the room. A woman lay on the cushions, and he knew, without knowing, that she was the one he had been summoned to see.He hesitated, but the woman beckoned him forward with a slow movement of her graceful arm. She was naked but for a golden chain wrapped three times around her waist. As he drew closer he could see that her hair was black and long, pulled forward over her left shoulder so that it draped across her breasts. Even in the dim candlelight, her hair glistened like oiled glass and her eyes seemed made up of thousands of individual amber crystals, each of them reflecting the light from the candles in the room. Closer to her, the scent of incense was stronger, almost overpowering. He drew it deep into his lungs and felt warmth radiate from inside him.He stood now in front of the cushions, his knees almost touching them, looking down at the woman. Her body was as artfully arranged as an old master's composition; though she was naked, the placement of her hair and the shadows that darkened her made it impossible for him to see her clearly."Do you know why I have had you brought here?" she asked him inRussian. Her voice was musical, its pitch exactly the same as that of the bell that still tinged softly from one of the far corners of the room. He breathed deeply again; his body felt as if it were losing its muscles; he wondered if she had spoken or if he had merely imagined the bell was speaking to him.She was looking at him, waiting for an answer. He tried to speak, but no words came. He shook his head."Because you belong to me," she said softly. Her eyes never left his face.Belong to her? No. No one belonged to anyone else. He summoned up his will and again tried to speak. This time, with effort, he forced the words out. "Madam, I ..."She ignored him. "From the day of your birth, you have belonged to me.""And if I do not so choose?" he said thickly. He was surprised that he had been able to speak the words; speaking was such an effort."The choice is not yours," she said, a hint of annoyance tingeing the smooth, throaty sounds. "You are only a man. Do not forget that. You are limited by your senses, your mortality. But I will make you more than a man."She paused as if awaiting an answer, but he could no longer speak. The very presence of the woman seemed to obliterate his sensibility and reason. He wanted only to be invited to lie down with her on the soft cushions, to rest his body and his aching, confused mind."You are my chosen one," she said. "I have searched the earth for you."He stared at her, unable to tear his eyes away from her shadowy face. "Why?" he asked softly, feeling cold. "Who am I to you?"A smile flickered around the edge of her mouth. "In all things there is opposition, reversal. Yin and yang, light and darkness, good and evil. In those beings of power, there are also two sides. Do you understand?"He drew a deep breath to try to clear his mind, but instead his lungs were filled again with the sinuous fire of the incense. This place was somehow infused with magic, he knew, powerful magic. Lapping around the borders of his consciousness was fear. The woman was soft and dark and smooth and rich as dreams, but there was no comfort in her for him."Is there someone who will come to this place?" he asked. "Someone to challenge me, perhaps? An evil man ..."The woman's smile broadened into a coarse, harsh laugh that resounded through the room.The man did not understand. He waited for her to explain, but instead she rolled over onto her back without speaking. Suddenly her body came alive, breasts thrust forward, the dark curled hair between her legs sharply visible in the candlelight. She was holding something in her hands. It was a snake fashioned out of gold, long and curved into an S. Its scales were meticulously carved, its mouth open with its tongue darting out as if it sensed danger.She placed it between her legs and drew it slowly between her thighs. Her eyes deigned to meet his. "Come to me," she commanded.He came.She held the gold snake up to him. Its luster seemed to grow in intensity, hurting his eyes. He feared the snake."Take it," she said.Trembling, he accepted the carved serpent. It burned his hands. His very soul seemed to gasp at the contact."An evil man has already come," she purred. Her voice licked him with promise. "The Prince of Death has come. My evil man."He closed his eyes. He understood. "My goddess," he said.She placed her silky hands on top of his. At her touch, his fear of the snake's power vanished. With a sigh, he snapped the golden serpent in two."Yes," she said softly into his ear, filling him with a deep, perverse lust that he realized he had longed for all his life. She had been right: He had no choice. His destiny was to serve her, to drink her magic, to live in spheres high above the scrambling and rutting of common men."My Prince of Death. One of my favorites

I found this book for the first time in a box of family give away books. I read it and loved it. That was several years ago, and now I re-read it every time I run out of books to read. Warren and Cochran do a great job of relaying the eternal struggle of good and evil alongside the modern storyline of international spy-games. I didn't want to stop reading this book when I reached the last page. I was happy to find that Warren and Cochran wrote High Priest to follow where Grandmaster left off. Both of these books are quick reads that often times go too quick.

My second copy

Yes. this is my second copy of Grandmaster..... this book hits a satisfying spot inside me. It's intense, a great combination of spy thriller and eastern mysticism. I can read it every 2 years or so, and love it every time. Too bad the new edition has such a cheesy cover compared to the original paperback issuance. It looks like a chess manual, which it certainly is not, although chess plays a serious part between the two main characters as they meet again and again throughout life. Get it!

American mysticism rules, ok?

What a rattling good yarn. I read this book, and its sequel, a number of years ago... and was lucky enough to find a battered, tattered old copy in my local library just the other day.
I don't know where it came from: it's not on their computerised index.
This a good read. A great way spend a cold winter's afternoon. Justin Gilead is all that's good about America and the East, and the bad hats are truly nasty. There's plenty of magic and mystery.. and the chess games are as tense as they should be. The characters are well-written, the story's a beaut, even the cover design's good.
If this book is ever re-released, I want it. You should, too.

Laris is a young orphaned ex-refugee gifted with the beast master ability allowing her to communicate with animals. About the Author
Andre Norton was one of the most famous science fiction and fantasy authors of all time. She was awarded a Life Achievement World Fantasy Award and named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. She wrote over one hundred novels, including novels in her Witch World, Beast Master, Solar Queen, and the Time Traders series. Miss Norton passed away in March 2005.

Lyn McConchie is the co-author with Andre Norton, of Beast Master's Ark, Beast Master's Circus, and other novels, as well as her own fiction. A native of New Zealand, she has been awarded the Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel by a New Zealander, for Beast Master's Ark, and again for Beast Master's Circus. She lives in Norsewood, New Zealand.

Not Vintage Norton

I love vintage Andre Norton Science Fiction (also fantasy), especially her series such as The Time Traders, Solar Queen, and most of the previous Beast Master books. But this book came as a big disappointment. I thought the previous volume (Beast Master's Circus) was quite good, and enjoyed the new character Laris and her alien cat Prauo, who are the main characters in this new book. However, this latest book soon degenerates into a number of teenage temper tantrums, and had me gritting my teeth instead of enjoying the book. The plot was interesting to begin with, but the juvenile personal interactions overshadowed everything else. Possibly a (young) teenager would like this book, but I have other suggestions for Norton fans. I've been reading Andre Norton since the 50's, and have over 80 of her hardcovers, dating as far back as 1944, so I have a lot to compare with, and this one I'd rate as one of the 3 worst of her books. Since all three are fairly recent and were written with co-authors, I suspect that Ms. Norton did very little of the plotting and writing herself, and of course, she passed away almost a year before this book was published. If you want some good, recent Norton, try the Time Traders and Solar Queen books co-authored with Sherwood Smith, or the "Mark of the Cat/Year of the Rat" pair, which was a total and delightful surprise to me--hearkening back to the vintage "Star Man's Son" in some spots.

Poor start, very strong finish

Lyn McConchie starts out Beastmaster's Quest with a lot of the same issues that existed in her collaboration with Andre Norton in Beastmaster's Circus. Namely, the female characters could do no wrong and the male characters were stone cold morons. While this sexism persists through about the first third of this book, it seems to go away as the plot moves along.

The eponymous Quest of this book is the search for the homeworld of Laris Trehannan's companion, the catlike Prauo. While the search does not have much in the way of drama, and the pre-voyage portion of the book is slowed by a lot of exposition, once the world they were seeking as a candidate for Prauo's home is located, things begin. The plot, pacing and story are all very similar to Andre Norton's first Beastmaster novels from some four decades past. The action, such as it is, is very short and to the point with no embellishments such as one might find in a sword and sorcery novel. The violence also seeks to advance the plot without being gratuitous.

The characters really come into their own in the final third of the book. The writing becomes almost seamless and some of the scenes are very touching, as the characters seem only too willing to sacrifice themselves for one another. The differing factions that they encounter on the alien world, and the characters' visceral reactions to the beliefs and actions of both sides put the characters into something of a pickle.

While the story ends with the typical sort of ending for the Beastmaster books, I cannot help but recommend this book. It's the most in keeping with the original Norton novels of this collaborative trilogy. While I would give a pass on Beastmaster's Circus, and would suggest Beastmaster's Ark only to get to know some of the new characters, Beastmaster's Quest is the best way this otherwise subpar trilogy could end: on a high note.

Final Beast Master story

Since Andre Norton died in March 2005, this has to be the final Beast Master story of 5. It does wrap up the series rather well, with Laris from Beast Master's Circus joined by the Storms & Logan Quade to find the home planet of Laris's telepathic cat Praou.
The first 2 of the series are now available in a combined reprint, that will be evident when you see it.

This anthology is a stellar compilation of new stories by 11 masters of the genre, with each tale set in a well-established and well-loved universe. Stephen King leads off with a grisly but compelling episode in the Dark Tower saga. Terry Pratchett's offering is an amusing incident in his Discworld series; editor Silverberg revisits the Majipoor of Lord Valentine; Tad Williams tells a haunting story that stems from his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy; and Raymond Feist spins a poignant tale of revenge within his Riftwar setting. Fans of Jordan's massive Wheel of Time saga will be especially interested to learn just how Lan and Moiraine first met and how their search for the baby who would become the Dragon Reborn began. Silverberg sets the scene with a fine introduction to fantasy in general and the contributors in particular; each of the novellas is preceded not only by an introductory note on the saga involved but also by a listing of all the books in the series to date. Buyer beware!!

If you're looking for George R.R. Martin's "The Hedge Knight" story, DO NOT buy the paperback version of this book. As one other reviewer noted, the paperback only includes 4 out of the 11 stories. Very disappointing.

Confusion Over Editions

There seems to be a lot of confusion over editions of LEGENDS. The complete eleven-story collection is available in the $14.95 trade paperback, a large-size book. The stories are also available as three smaller-size mass-market paperbacks, with the eleven stories divided over the three volumes. It costs more to buy the three smaller volumes than it does to buy the one-volume edition, so if you are looking for all the stories in the collection, the one-volume book is the way to go.

LEGENDS: SHORT NOVELS BY THE MASTERS OF MODERN FANTASY, edited and introduced by Robert Silverberg, presents "eleven rich, robust new stories by the best-known and most accomplished modern creators of fantasy fiction, each one set in the special universe of the imagination that made that writer famous throughout the word." Thus we have, for instance, a Wheel of Time story by Robert Jordan, an Earthsea story by Ursula K. Le Guin and, of course, a Discworld story by Terry Pratchett.
THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA is Stephen King's contribution, set in the world(s) of The Dark Tower. It describes how the last gunslinger, Roland of Gilead, encounters first a band of mutant humans and then the not-so-benevolent sisterhood of the title.
THE SEA AND LITTLE FISHES features Pratchett's Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, set at the time of an annual competition to see who's the best at witching. Granny's inevitable victory shakes up the whole kingdom as she shows how she's bad at being nice but good at being right.
DEBT OF BONES is a story by Terry Goodkind, set prior to the events of his Sword of Truth books. Abigail come to plead with the First Wizard to save her family from an early invasion of the D'Harans, but her mission does not go quite as she intends...
GRINNING MAN presents Davy Crockett as he never was, in Orson Scott Card's alternate America of the Tales of Alvin Maker. Crockett causes trouble for Alvin who, thanks to the young Arthur Stuart, learns an important lesson in distinguishing truly good acts from the disguises taken by evil acts like revenge.
THE SEVENTH SHRINE describes an event on Silverberg's own Majipoor, late in the reign of Valentine as Pontifex, the senior ruler of the giant planet. A strangely ritualistic murder during an archeological dig of an ancient alien city prompts Valentine to investigate.
DRAGONFLY revisits the wizards (and witches) of Earthsea in Le Guin's contribution. A local witch has detected some unidentified power in the girl Dragonfly but refuses to teach her any magic. Years later, the grown woman concocts a scheme with a visiting wizard to pass herself off as a man and study on Roke.

NEW SPRING describes how Lan met Moiraine as a prelude to Jordan's books of The Wheel of Time, answering the question of how he came to throw her into the freezing waters of a lake, and then become her Warder and join her twenty year quest to find the Dragon Reborn.
Before reading the collection, I had read books set in five of the eleven worlds presented, and I'm looking forward to further exploration of the other six. While writing good short fiction is difficult, writing good short fiction in a setting that's previously been described in the course of a number of novels must be even more difficult. Such a short story can't be treated merely as a chapter extracted from a novel, where storylines can be set up in earlier chapters and then concluded in later chapters, but I think that all of the authors met the challenge very well. Of course, many of them make their task a little easier by moving to a time before the events of any of their books, or to a setting that has not already been used, but the stories are still entertaining nonetheless. Possibly the only author to fall into the trap of providing too much background was Silverberg himself, though I'm still looking forward to reading the Majipoor books. Even those authors noted for writing huge individual works --- such as Robert Jordan, whose seven Wheel of Time books total over 4500 pages, constituting a single, continuous story --- managed complete pieces in eighty pages or less.
Coming at this from the point of view of a Pratchett fan, I can also recommend AFTER THE KING: STORIES IN HONOR OF J. R. R. TOLKIEN (Tor) and THE WIZARDS OF ODD (Ace).

If You've Read Erickson But Never Read Cook...

I had already begun Steven Erickson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series (which bears an obvious and admitted debt to Cook's works) prior to delving into this omnibus. I knew that the two series shared similarities, but knew precious little of the Black Company before I began.

Those similarities are pretty evident: both write in a rather clipped style and much attention is paid to military conflict. There are also some pretty big differences. Cook seems not at all interested in world building--city and town names are given with little detail given to where they are in relationship to each other and there is no map included with the book. In a lot of fantasy, a lot of the story is the journey; here, much of the journey is simply summarized. In the world of the Black Company, these details are not as important as the people who undertake them.

I also found the characters in Cook's world to be much more three-dimensional. This isn't a knock on Erickson, since he is juggling many more characters, but there are certain archetypes that show up in Malazan that serve the same function but in different portions/time periods of the world (comic relief, mysterious old god, etc.).

There was also a romantic thread that ran through all of these three books that started out as coloring and then blossomed into a major plot strand that I particularly liked, as it allowed the hard men and women who inhabit these books a chance to be more human.

I think both Erickson and Cook's works are worthy reads for anyone who enjoys fantasy: both write conflict-heavy page-turners that you'll being racing through to see what happens next. If you're looking for something epic and complicated, then Erickson is your man; if you're prefer something more straightforward and self-contained, then this omnibus is for you. Fans of one author who have never read the other are hereby encouraged to do so.

Horrible writing. Anyone who appreciates character development will NOT enjoy this book. Nothing is explained. Terms and organizations are mentioned without any type of backstory. We are auppoaed to care about the "Ten who were taken" but are never really told who they are in detail or why they matter." Situations end abruptly with no conclusion and anything of importance is glossed over: he was a giant with a feminine body, the end. No explanation. No further description. Is he really a giant, or just a guy who happens to be big. Another: our wizards went in, and crack. We won. Apparently the "crack" is the author's way of showing that someone did a fantastic magical spell. Buuuut there is no description of the spell. No details, no visualization, nada. Serially disappointed and definitely feel ripped off. I really gave this book a chance, but his incomphrensibly short sentences and lack of any info made me want to actually burn the book.

This is an fantastic book by a great author, Glen Cook. I would highly recommend that you read the whole series, as they are all good. His Garrett Files series is also great. I have been reading and re-reading them for years.
