A great start to a refreshing series

Whoever thought that Irene Adler, subject of only one Holmesian short story, would cause such a stir among fans? Now Carole Nelson Douglas at last brings to life a character that had only been mentioned save for her one famous line in "A Scandal in Bohemia": "Good night, Mr Holmes." From the inspiration of _the_ woman comes this fantastic first in a series that gets better and better. Not only are the books exciting, but they're refreshingly _funny_, filled with subtle wit and humor. Appearances by famed historical personages (Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, and later on the Divine Sarah Bernhardt) and famed fictional personages, Holmes and Watson themselves, make this series both realistic and amusing to read.
The characters in the Irene Adler series are complex: after reading the first three books, I still can't figure out whether or not I love or hate the character of Irene herself. Irene is the ultimate diva-detective, solving mysteries for the sake of curing her own boredom, and approaches everything with an impish enthusiasm. Impossibly radiant and beautiful, she eclipses the series' true heroine, the "Watson" to Irene, Penelope Huxleigh: a plain and proper parson's daughter who gets mixed up in Irene's life by mistake, in a very similar way that Watson met Holmes. Nell is the most intriguing character in the series, and easiest to identify with, even if she comes off as a prude at times. Anyone who has felt a "third wheel," or has been left in the shadows because of a more attractive friend, will relate to Nell. Barrister Godfrey Norton makes up the third of this main-character trio, who is astonishingly likeable - he adds a definite spark to the series that would surely be lost without him.
_Good Night, Mr. Holmes_ and the books that follow it (two or three of which are out of print and hard to find at present) will probably best liked by women, because it very accurately (and bemusedly) presents a female version of the Victorian era - one from a "modern" woman and one more subdued and conformist, and two different feminine views (from Irene and Nell) of Sherlock Holmes himself. It's very interesting to see Holmes as a minor character and adversary - and don't worry, Holmes fans: Nelson writes Holmes and Watson well.
I strongly recommend reading "A Scandal in Bohemia" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (found in _The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes_) before turning to the Irene Adler series, in order to get acquainted with the characters and see the Watsonian point of view on the case portrayed in _Good Night, Mr. Holmes_.

Highly polished writing

Ms. Douglas is a talented and practiced writer. This book and the others of this series show how well she has honed her craft.
This is a deeper look at Irene Adler who was a character in Doyle's, "A Scandal in Bohemia". She was one of the few people and the only woman to outwit Sherlock Holmes. The book retells the story from Adler's viewpoint and goes on to solve some other puzzles. Irene Adler, as she appears in the Douglas books, is truly an amazing woman. One would be hard pressed not to have admiration for her and her enormous abilities. She is shown as a virtuous, honest, married woman in this book instead of the "fallen woman" she is portrayed to be in the Doyle book.
All the narrative is done from the supposed diary of Penelope Huxley (Adler's Doctor Watson). Ms. Huxley is a dedicated spinster who apparently is meant to be the conscience of Victorian London. Some of her straight laced, over done morals are a bit trying but she is probably representative of the outlook of "proper" Victorian England. Penelope is a whiz at taking notes, much as Archie Goodwin is a supposed human tape recorder (Nero Wolfe series). It's very convenient to have someone on hand to do nothing but observe and record, thereby giving more credence to the story. There is much name dropping in this and all the other books of the series. Famous characters appear here and there for no apparent reason except to give added spice to the book. I think anyone who likes the Holmes series or who likes to boost the status of women in general will enjoy this book and the ones following it.

"The Woman" is indeed Holmes' equal .....almost!

If you are a fan of Holmes and know the story of Irene Adler and the "Scandal in Bohemia", this book will whet your Sherlockian appetite for more. Douglas writes in a style quite similar to Conan Doyle and makes Adler come alive as an irresistable heroine and a formidable sleuth as well. Unlike other Conan Doyle copycats, Douglas shows respect for the canon and a true knowledge of Holmesian lore. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

About the Author
Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel was born on February 16, 1834. He was a biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, and artist who discovered and named thousands of new species. He was a friend of Charles Darwin and promoted his work in Germany. Haeckel wrote The Evolution of Man and mapped a genealogical tree which traces the relationship between all life forms. His extraordinary artwork includes over 100 detailed illustrations, some of which have been published by Dover Publications in Art Forms in Nature from which the illustrations in this book have been licensed.

Beautiful work of art.

This is an incredible book. It is hardback with a glossy cover and 50 single-sided images on thick white paper. The images are taken from biologist Ernst Haeckel's work. They include cleaned up images of such things as radiolarians, shells, and jellyfish. There is also a page that indexes what each page contains. What isn't included are the higher life forms like birds and reptiles for example. The images are standard black and white, greyscale, or black backgrounds with gray scale images. The book is gorgeous, but a bit pricey. I may also get the one by Ernst Haeckel (Author) and David Abbey (Designer) called "Designs in Nature: the coloring book" Paperback – January 25, 2016. It is much cheaper and contains all 100 images. However, they are not cleaned up versions of the original plates like this book. I am torn as to which (or both) book(s) that I want for my collection. I may end up getting/keeping both.

In 1862 Ben and Johnny join a wagon train moving baggage and supplies for soldiers marching north from Texas. Two camels and their cameleer, Hadjee, are also with the wagon train when a Union cavalry platoon near Springfield, MO, overtakes the travelers and declares all of the animals to be contraband of war. The platoon commander talks Ben, Johnny, and the faithful Hadjee into driving the camels to his farm in Bright Star, IN. The three set off on a dangerous journey through war-torn territory. When Johnny is captured by the Yankees and charged with stealing a horse (his own), Ben and Hadjee forge ahead to Bright Star with the help of Princess. This story is not only a grand adventure but also deals with friendship, coming-of-age, unity, and perseverance in the face of obstacles. Young adults, particularly those who have read Brown's other books, will delight in this look at life in frontier America.

A journey through a war-torn country

This is a story of a journey through Missouri, on to Bright Star, Indiana during the Civil War. But the story is really about the travelers and the people they meet along the way. The basic plot is that an Army captain has acquired two camels (brought from Egypt to test in the southwest deserts) and hires Johnny and Ben to take them to his farm in Bright Star.

There is a second, parallel plot line, narrated by Ben some forty years later, reflecting on his memories of the journey to Bright Star. It's an enjoyable read and definitely has a Mark Twain feel to it. There are constant troubles and setbacks, the goal seemingly never reached. They run into a variety of unique characters, many of whom illustrate the hostile attitudes caused by the Civil War. Overall, a pleasant, enjoyable story.

The noted author and Historian of the West, Dee Alexander Brown, has branched out into fiction with this lengthy tale of delivering two camels from Missouri to Bright Star, Indiana. There are really two plot lines in this engaging novel. The first is the telling of the actual driving of the camels from war-torn (Civil War) Missouri to Indiana. It seems that Union Captain Solomon Lightfoot has dreams of a farming empire where camels would replace the horse and the ox. The good Captain "enlists" the services of Johnny Hawkes, young Ben Butterfield and a girl with the name of Jack Bonnycastle. With the aid of the Egyptian camel driver, Hadjee, this little group starts out towards Indiana. Their adventure allows Dee Brown to elicit the mannerisms, language and the simpler culture of a time long ago. This is told in the third person.
The second plot line, in the first person, presents the reminiscences of an older Ben Butterfield. It has to be some forty years later, since the characters discuss the assassination of William McKinley (1843-1901) and wonder if Pres. Roosevelt will be able to handle the office. (That's Teddy Roosevelt!) As the older Ben Butterfield remembers and relates, Dee Brown paints a picture of turn-of-the-century America, a simpler time when the telephone was becoming a jangling nuisance and rowing down a local river was considered a wonderful outing for the more adventurous in the town.
The novel comes to a nostalgic conclusion as the elder Ben Butterfield approaches his old circus that has come to town. He hopes to see his old friend, Jack Bonnycastle, who was really a girl, by the name of "Queen Elizabeth Jones". It seems that this girl had developed into a noted equestrian, who performed before the crowned heads of Europe. Due to a broken leg, Ben had been left behind as Queen Elizabeth and the circus had gone on to fame and glory. Ben Butterfield had always loved Queen Elizabeth Jones. The ending is rather sad but touching.
Tom Stechschulte does an excellent job in reading this book, nine full cassettes. The reader gives an unique and appropriate to the many different characters, ranging from wounded Southern soldiers to Hadjee, who has a little English and a little French. Well done. This presentation helped me to endure Boston Traffic.

An engaging but abrupt slice of Americana

Comparisons to "Huckleberry Finn" or "Cold Sassy Tree" are apt. Like these other novels, "The Way to Bright Star" is an adolescent's journey through an America at war. The people met along the way are the book's greatest strength: soldiers, everyday farmers, a girl in disguise. The dialogue is great, and the settings evoke a time when our county was truly the new frontier.
But the jumps from the Civil War era to the early 19th century can be abrupt, and leave you with a sense of an unfulfillment. The ending in particular was very disappointing, both as flashback and in the narration. Is Mr. Brown planning to make this book a series? If so, the ending will leave you hungry for more. But if this is all there is, you're in a for a disappointing letdown.

What appears to be the end of the Herbert-Anderson Dune prequels opens 56 years after the death of Serena Butler. The Jihad offers hopes of victory over the sentient machines and peace on human terms to a war-scarred galaxy. Unfortunately, the machine leader Omnius conceives a final, desperate, and, coming from a machine intelligence, ironic plan: biological warfare that spreads devastating plagues across scores of human-settled worlds. Herbert and Anderson vividly depict the plagues' effects, although given such a large cast of characters, some readers may feel the emotional impacts of particular characters' fates are rather blunted. The action rises to a thunderous climax in the account of the Battle of Corrin, which occupies a good third of a long book but more than makes up for previous deficiencies in pacing. At the end, we understand why House Corrino sits on the imperial throne, why House Harkonnen is out of favor, why House Atreides is where it is, and why Ishmael has led the ancestors of the Fremen into the desert wastes of the planet known as Arrakis. Thence on, or back, to Frank Herbert's perdurable classic. As before, a job well done. Roland Green

Enjoyed, but not as much as i thought I would....

I'm a huge Dune fan. I figured reading the before math that created the entirety of the Dune series would be awesome. I had trouble reading and accepting Brian's and KJA at first, but I'm not so put off anymore after reading some of their earlier works. I did,however, enjoy getting a back story to the infamous Bulgarian Jihad. They vilified and glorified characters I did not suspect. It seems a bit superfluous at times, but the details work themselves together in the end. All in All...... A great imagination of what Frank Herbert was intending in his original series.

This is the third in the prequel series Legends of Dune and continues the backhistory in an impressive manner. Author Brian Herbert (along with his coauthor Kevin J Anderson) totally honors his father's legacy with this well written and very intricate and detailed final book in this earliest prequel series, which ties up all the numerous story lines and also paves the way for the next series. A great read and overall excellent.

Some tales (e.g., Sam Hall ) show their age but well reflect the writing popular at the time, while others, particularly those that play with fantasy elements (e.g., The Saturn Game ), underscore Anderson's tendency toward densely written, emotive prose, with a dollop of soul-satisfying melodrama. Among samples from his many series are The Master Key, a Nicholas van Rijn story from his Technic History series, and The Problem of Pain, one of his tales of the Poleosotechnic League. Both highlight the great divide between human and alien, but of chief interest is not the misunderstanding between the two but rather the human response to loss. The bittersweet Death and the Knight, part of the Time Patrol sequence, repeats a familiar Time Patrol plot (time traveler gone missing must be rescued), but with a twist. Classic must-read stories include Goat Song and The Queen of Air and Darkness, both of which foreground faerie. And Quest, in the sword-and-sorcery-meets-high-tech world of The High Crusade, posits an outer-space quest for the Holy Grail. Anderson provides brief headnotes for each story, full of anecdotes about fellow SF luminaries. This anthology represents the life's work of one of SF's most enduring and versatile writers.

The 18 pieces the late Anderson chose for this career-spanning collection offer an embarrassment of riches. Three selections--"Goat Song," "The Queen of Air and Darkness," and "The Saturn Game"--won major sf and fantasy awards, and three others, though they aren't all extracts from them, "represent," Anderson says, his novels The High Crusade (1960), Three Hearts and Three Lions (1961), and A Midsummer Tempest (1974). Revolution is explored in "Sam Hall," telepathy in the grim "Journey's End," and loss in "Kyrie." Anderson's best-known character, Nicholas van Rijn, appears in "The Master Key," and one of the two winged alien races he created (the best of their kind), the Ythrians, features in "The Problem of Pain." Science, philosophy, poetry

"Going for Infinity" contains eighteen stories by Poul Anderson, written over the course of a half-century. Fifty years is an immensely long time in the history of science fiction. It almost is the history of science fiction. In terms of literature, though, fifty years is nothing. Science fiction has hardly begun its life in human culture. No wonder, then, that it has changed so much since its birth, just like a baby does in its first few years. From mute and helpless infant, to crawler and communicator, to walker and talker.

Poul Anderson's writing covers in time most of the life of the genre of science fiction, but the stories in Going for Infinity range less widely in style and substance than the genre as a whole. Anderson says in the Introduction:

"What [Robert Gleason, my editor] had in mind [for this book] was not simply another collection, but a retrospective - besides stories, something about their origins, backgrounds, contexts, a historical overview of the science fiction and fantasy field throughout those decades."

Then Anderson immediately follows with:

"Of course, this isn't really possible. I have been only one writer among many, and how wonderfully diverse a lot they were and are! "

Anderson's own stories in this collection are largely the product of a fairly straightforward synergy of contemporary science (contemporary to the time of writing), and imagination. In introducing the first story, "The Saturn Game," published in 1981, he recounts his visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory a few years later "to witness Voyager One's flyby of this very planet." Anderson had also written another story set on the Saturnine moon Iapetus. Anderson wondered,

Would my speculation prove completely mistaken? It's a risk that science fiction always takes, a risk that in the long run becomes an inevitability. But would this piece of mine have any run of might-be-so at all?

This realism, this concern that a story fit the facts, characterizes most of Anderson's stories in "Going for Infinity." These are not William Gibson stories. Most of them are science fiction as a backdrop of unfamiliarity against which the ordinary - but lonely, sad, evil, good, beautiful - stands out in a new and exciting way, or maybe just a simpler, more obvious, less complicated way. Economics, democracy, religion - these are all examined anew under the strange light of an unfamiliar sun.

Another mark of Anderson's stories is the emphasis on the writing itself. He tells stories, but even more he paints images and composes music in language. Not just fantasy clichés of `purple mountains on the horizon', but lines crafted from a conscious and deliberate wielding of language and words and rhythm and space. This, I think, is the most satisfying element of Anderson's work here.

There is more to enjoy, though. Anderson introduces every story with comments on the story itself, or its inception, context, or repercussions. He mentions other writers, other times, other ideas. For Anderson fans, this will surely be welcomed.

Though this collection mostly is of a realistic style, there is some other more fantastic pieces mixed in. "Goat Song" is one of these. Published in 1972, this story was somehow influenced by another science fiction story, "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," and Cocteau's film Orpheus. It seems appropriate that this story struck me as the most contemporary, regardless of publication date.

"Going for Infinity" is definitely a worthwhile collection to own, and Anderson's stories more than worth reading.

Homage to a grandmaster

GOING FOR INFINITY pays homage to one of the speculative fiction's greatest authors of the twentieth century by providing a taste of Poul Anderson's works as well as his retrospective thoughts over the six decades he wrote. The tales run the gamut of science fiction and fantasy with mystery thrown in showing how diverse a writer Mr. Anderson was. Some of the science fiction seems obsolete, but when looked from a historiographic perspective provides insight into the times the stories were written and into the mind of a creative individual. The fantasies and detective contributions hold up better as they clearly show Mr. Anderson's real talent of turning the obviously impossible into something that feels real and genuine; thus leaving the awed audience celebrating the classic works of a noteworthy renaissance writer.

A Tour De Force : the Author's Picks

No single volume can encompass the "best of" an author like Poul Anderson, whose career spanned the history of, and set many of the benchmarks for the mixed genres of fantasy and hard science fiction. This volume is, rather, a collection of milestones that he, looking back, has identified along the way. Some are dated in their concepts and language (which he tells you up front, and they come by it honestly), but each presents you with a glittering gem of science fiction / fantasy history whose underlying ideas are as fresh today as when they first appeared. Above all, Poul Anderson understands and exalts the language. When you read a given verbal structure in an Anderson story, it is immediately clear to you, even if the verbiage is not commonplace, why it is worded the way it is and what it means. His prose often evokes the same exalted, multireferential effect that one receives from good poetry. As icing on this entirely edible cake, each story is placed in context with a brief preface provided by the author. This is a treasure.

Weather junkies and those who like to scrutinize charts will be entertained by this folksy work, which is chock-full of information, lists, and accounts of personal experiences involving extreme weather by meteorologist and TV personality Evans. Included are sections on tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards, with a good amount of information on each and a healthy dose of photos and diagrams sprinkled throughout. Each section includes a lengthy True Bill Evans Weather Story detailing Evans’ harrowing experiences with each type of phenomenon. The final section is a hodgepodge of information and lists about droughts, floods, tsunamis, volcanoes, and earthquakes, and additional extreme weather, such as thunderstorms. The strange occurrence of creatures falling from the sky is covered only briefly. Although the cover proclaims that experiments are included, there is only one experiment and a few lists of websites to find others. The blue-toned photos might be a deterrent to some. About the Author

Bill Evans has won multiple Emmy Awards for his work as Senior Meteorologist for WABC, Channel 7. He has also been seen regularly on Good Morning America and can be heard nationally on the ABC Radio Network, Martha Stewart Living Radio, ESPN Radio, and in the New York metropolitan area on WPLJ. In addition to teaching adult classes on weather and forecasting, Evans speaks at dozens of elementary and middle schools every year, talking to students about weather and meteorology. It's Raining Fish and Spiders grew out of the keen interest of these students. Evans was recently awarded an honorary Doctorate in Letters of Humanity by Dowling College. He lives with his family in Connecticut.

Great Weather Book for Anyone Who Loves Weather!

A must have book for students and adults who really enjoy learning about weather. It educates through entertainment. A very funny book as well as very informative. Bill tells stories of his chasing tornadoes, flying through hurricanes, and being on the top of Mt. Washington in a tremendous snow storm.
Every page has funny titles and enlightening information on weather. Everything you need to know about weather as a beginner is in his book.

Bill Evans, an expert in Weather, Meteorology and forecasting is also a great storyteller as he delivers "IT'S RAINING FISH AND SPIDERS." The research shows to be excellent, along with myths, charts, and illustrations. The topics covered include a variety of weather conditions including hurricanes, snowflakes, and lightning. This unique book peaks the interest of children and adults as well, with awesome photos. In addition, the author includes his own experience in different weather situations. He provides simple at-home experiments that are not expensive, includes many facts about the natural world, and spices some pages with humor. I highly recommend this fascinating book to young adults, parents, and teachers. The author is not only an expert on Mother Nature, but his knowledge is a great contribution to science projects, much needed in schools for the curious mind.

Rosanne Bittner and her husband, Larry, live in southwest Michigan and have two grown sons. Ms. Bittner is the author of more than fifty books about the American West of the 1800s and Native Americans. She is a member of Romance Writers of America, Western Writers of America, Western Outlaw-Lawman History Association, Nebraska Historical Society, Oregon-California Trails Association, the Council on America's Military Past, and Women Writing the West. Annie set out a blackberry pie she'd baked herself, then stepped back to view the grand display of food brought in by the women of Willow Creek. It was all laid out on a long table made of boards set on top of barrels, then covered with tablecloths.Aside from her upcoming marriage, Annie was sure this day would become one of her best memories. Most of the population of Willow Creek was here to help build Luke Wilde's barn, one of the finishing touches to the biggest farm in the area--a farm she would soon share with Luke."Annie Barnes, I'm so jealous!"Annie turned to share a smile with her good friend, Jenny Carlson. "Of what?" she teased."You know what! You snagged the most handsome, most successful man in the Ohio Valley!"Annie laughed. "I don't know if you'd call it snagging. You know good and well that Luke and I have been friends since we were kids. He and his brother are practically part of the family. It's not like Luke and I suddenly met and I had to runafter him." She looked back at the barn, watching Luke, so handsome and strong. He was helping another man place a hand-hewn support beam. "Luke told me he's known he wanted to marry me since I was twelve years old."Jenny grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "Everybody knew you and Luke would end up together," she told Annie. "My brothers used to make bets on it. Sam said Luke would marry you, and Clete said it would be Jeremiah."Annie felt a tiny pain in her chest at the mention of Luke's brother. "Oh?" She looked back at Jenny, forcing herself to keep a smile on her face. "Why on earth would I marry a wandering man like Jeremiah?"Jenny laughed. "Because he was crazy about you once himself, you know. And Lord knows, it's a hard decision as to which brother is the best looking. That Jeremiah, he used to make my heart pound back before he left three years ago, and I was only thirteen then, not even old enough to be thinking that way about a man. Did you know that Jeremiah and Luke had a big fight over you right before Jeremiah left?"Now it became a struggle for Annie to keep smiling and appear unaffected. "No! Are you serious?""You didn't know, did you? My brothers ordered me to keep it a secret, but now that you're marrying Luke--"Annie's mother began clanging a cowbell, interrupting the conversation. "Time to eat!" she hollered at the men working on the barn. Several of the men let out whoops and whistles, clamoring down from the still-open rafters to wash hands and faces at water barrels."I'm going to find Larry!" Jenny told Annie. "He promised to eat with me!"Annie watched her friend run off to find Larry Klug, a young man from distant Fort Harmar who'd lately been callingon Jenny as often as possible while the summer weather allowed it. Jenny's wildly curly, dark hair fluttered every which way as she ran, and Annie lost sight of her as men began gathering around the table of food. Preacher Patrick Falls, who'd come to Willow Creek two years ago to minister to the settlers, called out that they should all pray before eating.Now Luke was beside Annie, moving a hand to her waist. She glanced up at him before prayer, thinking how he looked even more handsome when he was tanned and sweating from the hot sun. His thick, dark hair fell recklessly about his face, its color and the tan only accenting his amazingly blue eyes. Luke smiled down at her proudly. Annie knew he was bursting with joy at finally getting the barn finished before they would marry. The wedding was set for less than two weeks from now.Preacher Falls prayed, but Annie didn't hear the words. Jeremiah and Luke had fought over her? Did Jeremiah tell Luke what happened--that night in the barn--between her and himself? Surely not! Luke would never have asked her to marry him if he knew.Why? Why had she allowed that to happen? Luke was the brother who had stayed put and worked hard. Luke had built this wonderful farm, and had even built a fine stone housefor his betrothed. Luke was the brother who had pursued her and asked her to marry him, and there was not one thing about him for a woman not to love.She did indeed love him, but she'd also loved his brother. And it was his brother who had seduced her that night in the barn at her parents' farm ... his brother who had a way of casting a spell on her and making her do foolish things ... his brother who had taken her first.While the preacher prayed his thanks for the food they were about to eat, Annie prayed that Luke would never find out how passionately she'd loved Jeremiah, how foolish she'd been that night, how deeply hurt she'd been when Jeremiah left after that--three years ago--never to come back. Luke was the stable farmer, a man who would always be around to protect and provide for his wife and family. Jeremiah, the wanderer, would have been gone much more than at home.People were talking and visiting now, standing in line to eat. Luke, her wonderful Luke, was right behind her, talking and laughing, a man happy to be finishing his barn, happy to be getting married soon. Oh, how she loved him! If only she'd known life would turn out this way, she never would have shared that night with Jeremiah.Now she felt angry with Jenny for bringing up the subject,spoiling such a wonderful day. She smiled as she handed Luke a plate so he could fill it with beans and ham and biscuits and pie. She pointed out her own berry pie, and he took a slice, giving her a wink and smiling with full lips and even, white teeth. "I'm not only marrying the prettiest girl in these parts, but also the best cook," he told her.Annie blushed, hoping her nose wasn't getting too red from the sun. She thought how fair her skin was compared to Luke's tanned hands. Her skin wouldn't take color. It simply burned and peeled and stayed white. Her red freckles matched her red hair, and Luke always told her that her green eyes made him think of green apples. She hated her freckles, but Luke loved them. Her heart rushed at the thought of sharing his bed in only two more weeks. She just hoped ... could a man tell if a woman wasn't a virgin? Maybe not when it was only once, and after all, it had been three years ago. Much as she'd been crazy about Jeremiah, she now loved Luke in a different, deeper way, and she couldn't stand the thought of how hurt he'd be if he knew what she'd done.Now the air was full of talk and laughter and forks hitting dishes. Younger children ran and played, ducking around those who were eating, chasing dogs and chickens. Men teased Luke about his upcoming marriage, and women talked about quilting and recipes. Annie's brothers, seventeen-year-old Jake and fifteen-year-old Calvin, sat on a log with Luke. They adored him, as did her little sister, twelve-year-old Sally, who walked around pouring coffee for the men.Yes, this was a good day after all. She would soon be Mrs. Luke Wilde. This was not a day for thinking about a mistake she'd made three years ago. Women began filling their own plates, but Annie couldn't eat. The excitement of the day, combined with the heat, brought little appetite ... and Jenny's commentabout the fight between Luke and Jeremiah disturbed her. Luke had never mentioned it. Why not?Before long, people began moaning about being too full. There was more visiting and laughter, and some of the men lay back in the grass to rest a bit before returning to work on the barn. In the distance, Luke's fields were ripening with corn and potatoes. Cattle grazed in another field, and chickens clucked and strutted everywhere. A few of Annie's mother's friends congratulated Annie and offered to help with the upcoming wedding."We're having Luke over tomorrow night to talk more about it," Ethel Barnes told her good friend, Hilda Pickens."And, of course, I will play the piano for the wedding," Hilda insisted."Of course you will! You're the only woman in Willow Creek who knows how to play the piano!" Ethel answered. The women all laughed, and Annie joined them. Neither she nor the others noticed at first that a rider was just then approaching the gathering. It was Annie who finally caught sight of him. He sat tall on his black horse, his long, dark hair blowing in the light, hot breeze, the fringes of his buckskin clothing dancing with the rhythm of his body as it moved to the horse's gait.Annie's heart nearly stopped beating. Waste of time

I find it hard to believe that this is the same author who wrote _Song of the Wolf_. I'm starting to believe that she must have been truly inspired for that book because none of her other books come close to measuring up.

I completely agree with a previous reviewer--the writing is dumbed down. I was bored, bored, bored. Not even the dialogue felt authentic. None of the characters seemed real and I never felt invested in the plot or the time period.

If you're looking to read a Bittner novel, don't waste your time on this one--get a copy of _Song of the Wolf_!

powerful trek to 1780 in the Ohio Valley

In 1780, the American Colonies close to the ocean are embroiled in hostilities with the English military. Further inland in places along the Ohio River, the locals barely feel the war. Most residents are neutrally ambivalent or lean towards loyalty to the crown with few freedom fighters. In Willow Creek, like most of the Ohio Valley settlements, the Revolution takes a back stage to farming and family. Luke Wilde works the land whether he is an English subject or an American citizen. However, his brother Jeremiah has wandered the wilderness and thus has a wider perspective so he desires freedom at any cost.
After being away for three years, Jeremiah returns to Willow Creek on the eve of his sibling's marriage to Annie Barnes. Jeremiah loves Annie, but knows she is better off with his brother, which is why he left in the first place. His arrival brings the British army to previously peaceful Willow Creek forcing the two brothers to join in arms against the oppressor while Annie remains wild about both men.
THE SETTLERS is an exciting historical tale that looks closely at a segment of American Revolutionary War society often ignored by textbooks. The vivid story line brings to the forefront the varying feelings including internal conflict towards the war and the crown. This leads to deep characterizations, at least on the colonial side. The English come across as caricatures because they appear as abusive brutes rather than concerned individual with some doubts about fighting their Anglo brothers. Fans of strong Americana novels will appreciate Roseanne Bittner's powerful trek to 1780 in the Ohio Valley.

Dumbed-down writing

For years I was a staunch fan of Bittner's books, but moved on to other authors when some of her later books lost their appeal. I just recently returned to this author with "Into the Valley" and found even greater disappointment. Bittner has so dumbed down her writing that there is no depth to the characters, let alone the plot. I find this a common style amongst many romance writers - the writing seems to be geared to no more than a 6th grade level. I cringe to think that the book editors and publishers are advising authors along this line of thinking, but I fear it is so. The result is that I couldn't find any emotional attachment to the characters. And the "living history" that was supposedly conveyed was a very narrow window. The sad thing is that Bittner had a potentially interesting plot revolving around the love triangle of Luke, Jeremiah, and Annie. Fleshed out, this could have made for interesting writing, but noooooooooo, sadly, that didn't happen. Some parts were almost funny - the "coupling" scenes were similar to two dolls that some omniscient hand places face to face, they couple, they roll apart. The whole book made me feel like Bittner couldn't decide whether to write a romance or an historical novel, found she had time for neither, so churned out this weak no-brainer. It's time she retires; her heart is no longer in it.
