Confrontation at Lepanto: Christendom vs. Islam, by T. C. F. Hopkins

Like an angry lion, the Turkish menace growled at the frontiers of Europe. In 1453, the last remnant of the mighty Roman Empire was obliterated when Turkish forces overran Constantinople. Western civilization was being threatened by medieval Islam. By 1570, a huge Turkish fleet had begun to turn the Mediterranean into a Muslim lake. A year later Pope Pius V created an anti-Ottoman alliance known as the Holy League--Christendom's answer to Jihad.
One morning in October 1571, Don John of Austria, commanding the fleet of the Holy League, met the Ottoman Turks in the waters at the mouth of the Gulf of Patros. The future of a despairing, fragmented Europe was about to be decided....
By four o'clock that afternoon the naval battle had become a mêlée, and the sea had literally turned from blue to red from all the blood shed. When the smoke cleared, the Turkish fleet had been broken.
In sheer numbers of casualties there has never been a more costly naval battle than Lepanto. The Crusaders lost 17 ships and 7,500 men; the Muslims lost more than 200 warships and nearly 20,000 men.
For the first time in more than a century, West had defeated East. The Christians had successfully taken the offensive. Lepanto was one of the greatest turning points in history, though the centuries to come would see many more battles in the continuing conflict between Christianity and Islam.
Confrontation at Lepanto is a fascinating account of that decisive battle on a very human level. Drawing on meticulous research, the author brings to life personalities, tactics, and details, making the narrative as fascinating and compelling as a novel. The result is a book whose lessons resonate today.

From Booklist
The so-called "clash of civilizations" explanation of the current tensions between the Islamic world and the West may be a distortion or exaggeration or an outright myth. But 500 years ago it was an undeniable reality. In the sixteenth century, it was Islam under the aggressive leadership of the Ottoman Turks that appeared to be ascendant. The great Christian citadel of Constantinople had fallen in 1453; a century later, the Turkish navy was poised to gain control of the southern and eastern rims of the Mediterranean. The threat, however, energized Christian nations to form an alliance, the Holy League. In 1571, two fleets met off the coast of Greece in the last great battle of oar-driven ships. The victory of the Holy League was a major turning point in history. Hopkins has provided a compact, fast-moving, and frequently exciting account of the struggle, climaxed by an absorbing blow-by-blow description of the daylong battle, avoiding excessive reliance on naval jargon, enabling general readers to appreciate this excellent recounting of a seminal event. Slapdash
By J. B. Montgomery
"Never judge a book by its cover", the old saying goes. I'm sorry to say that this is a trap I fell into with this account of the battle, for the cover for Confrontation at Lepanto is excellent. The content, sadly, is not.

Confrontation offers a great deal of preamble regarding the politics of the day and the preparaions for battle that manages to be cursory and irritatingly long-winded at the same time before the reader is finally treated to a scanty eleven or so pages (small pages) on the battle (it seems like far less). The book then proceeds on its way with an "aftermath" stretching all the way to the death of Don John of Austria that succeeds in being uninformative and yet dragging in much the same way as the lead up to the battle did.

The entire thing reads very much like a stretched out Wikipedia entry--and you would probably learn about as much from one but for a few very small stories of the individuals which took part in the battle (allow me to underscore that: very and dissapointingly few, and not very vivididly recounted where the fighting is concerned). The author also seems to be trying too hard to throw around "big words". It is as though the entire thing has been run through a thesaurus in an effort to dress up the language and you will notice that "rancour", "rancourous" etc. seems to crop up with annoying frequency. The "Christendom vs. Islam" subtitle also seems (at the risk of sounding like a bit of a pinko) calculated to suck in anyone with a casual distrust or dislike of Islam in these turbulent times and keen to read about it taking a drubbing, as there wasn't really any discussion about the clash of cultures between East and West at the time. The book also offers a schmaltzy and highly ludicrous little epitaph about how the battle could have helped towards reconciliation between the combatabts which seems totally out of place.

Readers expecting something to the standard of Ernle Bradford's excellent The Great Siege, Malta 1565 will be sorely disappointed.

Amateur history
By T. Webster
T. C. F. Hopkins is a pen name of vampire fantasy writer Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. This book has an earnest quality that is touching and slightly pathetic by turns. The back dustjacket-flap states that the author is "a famous and beloved author" who has been nominated for prizes but has never won any. This book is unlikely to change that trend. The writing is convoluted and over-punctuated, with frequent overblown vocabulary ("carnassial hatred," "oppugnant" purposes, a "recreant" capture, "diplomatic abjuration"), fatuous phrasing ("Europe had other problems on its plate," "dragged their metaphorical heels"), and too much repetition of content and phrase for an edited book. It is enough to state once that Venetians called their city The Most Serene Republic of Venice. Repeating the phrase at intervals seems too cute. That's unfortunate, because as an introduction to European religious politics of the 16th century and the great naval battle of Lepanto in the Corinth Channel in 1571, the book presents good background and a reasonably interesting narrative.

My own interest in the battle stems from the fact that Cervantes, author of "Don Quixote" (Part I, 1605), served on a Spanish ship and emerged from the battle with his left hand maimed. The book has an index but no bibliography or notes, so the reader can't know what sources the author relied on or where to read more about some aspect of the events leading up to this bloody battle or resulting from the hard-fought victory of the Holy League over the Ottoman fleet. (This is particularly odd because the author has a detailed bibilography of her own books on her official Web site.) This unwillingness to acknowledge her sources makes the book much less useful than it might otherwise have been. The description of the battle has good passages but tends to peter out where a more able writer (C. S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian) would have brought out the excitement of the battle for the reader. If the publishers issue this book in paperback, they would be well advised to acknowledge sources and to provide better maps and some illustrations of the different types of ship used in the battle.

Not history
By James
I am a published author who is constantly reading and doing research for my upcoming books. I was recently given this book as a gift by a friend who had not read the book, but purchased it based on the beautiful cover. I found the book quite disturbing due to the author's constant bashing of the Catholic Church. She makes all kinds of malicious allegations, but there are no footnotes, and she references nothing. There is no bibliography, so we are left to wonder what her allegations are based upon. We don't know. She seems to be an authority unto herself. Her assertions can be easily disproven by anyone with an open mind who will actually do the research. The author does not stay focused on her topic, and these false allegations against the Catholic Church have nothing to do with the actual battle of Lepanto.

As an example, on page 24, she states: "By contrast to the chaotic German states, Spain was easily the most cohesive - read: repressive - and affluent country in Europe at the time..," She further states that "this gave it a significant advantage in its dealings with other nations, and, for that matter, the Catholic Church, which it strove to direct along its own, very conservative, path." It's interesting that the author doesn't even let the readers draw their own conclusions, she literally tells them what to think. And, since when does being conservative mean that you're repressive?

On the next page, she continues: "For this was the height of the Spanish Inquisition, an institution that defined most of the policies of the Spanish Empire, and where Spain went, so did the Spanish version of Catholicism, carried by hosts of monks whose task it was to convert the heathen in foreign lands, or let the soldiers either enslave or kill them for being unworthy of salvation." Actually, the Spanish monarchs protected the natives in the new world, as much as was in their power to do so. Forced conversions were never the policy of the Spanish government or the Catholic Church, and the government punished those who treated the Indians unfairly. The fact that some men did evil does not make that the policy of the government. In addition, the Catholic Church has never said that anyone or any race of people is unworthy of salvation.

Then, as now, there were people who acted outside of the law, and being half-way across the planet, some people took advantage of the fact that they were so far away from government oversight that they thought that they could act with impunity. That does not make the conduct of those individuals the official policy of the Spanish government. Should we apply that notion to our own county? If we did, then it would be just as accurate to say that since we have had, on occasion, mass murderers in our schools that our government somehow advocates that conduct. That's just ridiculous.

The author gives the "official" Spanish position as "...since there was no mention of the American natives in Scripture, they were destined for Limbo and could not hope for Heaven, which meant that the Church need not be responsible for their salvation, or their abuse. For the next fifty years, this posture dictated Spanish policy toward all American natives with the sole exception of the Incas." (pg. 25)

This is absolutely false in all regards. Christ said to go out and teach all nations. That means that the Church is apostolic by its very nature. Why would He have sent the apostles out to teach all nations if some races of people had no hope of salvation? The very reason that the monks went to the New World was to help them save their souls, and the Spanish government gave the bishop in charge the title of "Protector of the Indians." By this and the special laws that were established at the time by the Spanish monarchs to protect the Indians, we can deduce that the official policy of the Spanish government was indeed the Protection of the Indians.

Finally, and most egregiously, she states: "In Spain, persecution of supposed heretics reached levels significantly in excess of those in other countries, and served to feed the witch-frenzy in many Protestant religions. It may be significant that in Spain, the accused heretics were, in nine out of ten cases, women, and it was regarded as proof of female diabolism if an Inquisitor got an erection during the Questioning (read: unofficial torture) of an accused woman." (pg. 25-26)

Really? There was someone there keeping these statistics? This is highly offensive and inflammatory. As an author, and student of history, I have never seen these allegations from any authoritative source. I don't believe the author has either, particularly since there are no footnotes, references or even a bibliography.

Literally millions of Indians in the New World converted to the Catholic Faith, and their descendents remain Catholic to this very day. The Catholic faith is a religion adhered to and deeply loved by nearly 25% of the world's population, well over 1 billion people. Surely the author does not think that all of us have been duped, or that we have no right to believe as we do.

For some reason, in our politically correct world, it's OK to insult the faith of 1 billion people, while every other cult is demanding respect and inclusion. How do we Catholics get in on that tolerance and inclusion thing?

The author's repeated false allegations against the Spanish and the Catholic Church have nothing to do with the battle of Lepanto, so one is left to wonder why she finds it necessary to slander them. I am also left to wonder if she is writing under a pen name because she's unwilling to take responsibility for her statements.

I give this book 1 star only because there is no lower rating.

Winner of the American Mystery Award for Best Novel of Romantic Suspense, and the Romantic Times Award for Best Historical Mystery

Miss Irene Adler, the beautiful American opera singer who once outwitted Sherlock Holmes, is also a superb detective, as Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker can attest. Even Holmes himself must admit--albeit grudgingly--that she acquits herself competently.

But in matters of the heart she encounters difficulty. The Crown Prince of Bohemia--tall, blonde, and handsome--proves to be a cad. Will dashing barrister Godfrey Norton be able to convince Irene that not all handsome men are cut from the same broadcloth?

Guy Ritchie is directing a new film for Warner Bros. based on the life of Sherlock Holmes, due out in the fall of 2009. Robert Downey Jr. is Holmes, Jude Law is his able sidekick Dr. Watson. Rachel McAdams portrays Irene Adler, a femme fatale who Holmes always considered to be "the woman"--and who outwitted Holmes when few could.

From Publishers Weekly
Setting herself the task of creating a heroine worthy of Sherlock Holmes, Douglas, a Texas writer of science fiction ( Counterprobe ), succeeds smashingly. In providing an inventive, believable past for Irene Adler, the one woman (and an American at that) who ever duped Holmes, Douglas writes in a voice that resonates of Dr. Watson's (or Conan Doyle's) when appropriate, and links Adler's adventures with information offered about her in Doyle's "A Scandal in Bohemia." Narrated with credible Victorian style and sensibility by Penelope "Nell" Huxleigh, a parson's daughter, this lively caper establishes Adler's sleuthing skills as she solves cases that involve Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker, among others. The novel has more going for it than the usual Holmesian pastiche, presenting a truly original perspective of the one whom the great detective himself dubbed "the woman." She's a superior woman at that: readers will doff their deerstalkers.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Irene Adler was the only woman that Sherlock Holmes admired. They met in Scandal in Bohemia --she outwitted the great detective and she was never heard from again. Who was she? What was her background? What happened to her? This fascinating book answers these questions and many more. Adler's adventures as an opera singer to those of a detective from London to Prague to Paris are chronicled by her own "Dr. Watson" in the personage of her friend Penelope Huxleigh. Douglas also presents a portrait of women in late Victorian society from a woman's point of view. This book will encourage YAs to read the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and other literature from that era.

A great start to a refreshing series
By Kait Rankins
Whoever thought that Irene Adler, subject of only one Holmesian short story, would cause such a stir among fans? Now Carole Nelson Douglas at last brings to life a character that had only been mentioned save for her one famous line in "A Scandal in Bohemia": "Good night, Mr Holmes." From the inspiration of _the_ woman comes this fantastic first in a series that gets better and better. Not only are the books exciting, but they're refreshingly _funny_, filled with subtle wit and humor. Appearances by famed historical personages (Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, and later on the Divine Sarah Bernhardt) and famed fictional personages, Holmes and Watson themselves, make this series both realistic and amusing to read.
The characters in the Irene Adler series are complex: after reading the first three books, I still can't figure out whether or not I love or hate the character of Irene herself. Irene is the ultimate diva-detective, solving mysteries for the sake of curing her own boredom, and approaches everything with an impish enthusiasm. Impossibly radiant and beautiful, she eclipses the series' true heroine, the "Watson" to Irene, Penelope Huxleigh: a plain and proper parson's daughter who gets mixed up in Irene's life by mistake, in a very similar way that Watson met Holmes. Nell is the most intriguing character in the series, and easiest to identify with, even if she comes off as a prude at times. Anyone who has felt a "third wheel," or has been left in the shadows because of a more attractive friend, will relate to Nell. Barrister Godfrey Norton makes up the third of this main-character trio, who is astonishingly likeable - he adds a definite spark to the series that would surely be lost without him.
_Good Night, Mr. Holmes_ and the books that follow it (two or three of which are out of print and hard to find at present) will probably best liked by women, because it very accurately (and bemusedly) presents a female version of the Victorian era - one from a "modern" woman and one more subdued and conformist, and two different feminine views (from Irene and Nell) of Sherlock Holmes himself. It's very interesting to see Holmes as a minor character and adversary - and don't worry, Holmes fans: Nelson writes Holmes and Watson well.
I strongly recommend reading "A Scandal in Bohemia" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (found in _The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes_) before turning to the Irene Adler series, in order to get acquainted with the characters and see the Watsonian point of view on the case portrayed in _Good Night, Mr. Holmes_.

Highly polished writing
By William L. Gilstrap
Ms. Douglas is a talented and practiced writer. This book and the others of this series show how well she has honed her craft.
This is a deeper look at Irene Adler who was a character in Doyle's, "A Scandal in Bohemia". She was one of the few people and the only woman to outwit Sherlock Holmes. The book retells the story from Adler's viewpoint and goes on to solve some other puzzles. Irene Adler, as she appears in the Douglas books, is truly an amazing woman. One would be hard pressed not to have admiration for her and her enormous abilities. She is shown as a virtuous, honest, married woman in this book instead of the "fallen woman" she is portrayed to be in the Doyle book.
All the narrative is done from the supposed diary of Penelope Huxley (Adler's Doctor Watson). Ms. Huxley is a dedicated spinster who apparently is meant to be the conscience of Victorian London. Some of her straight laced, over done morals are a bit trying but she is probably representative of the outlook of "proper" Victorian England. Penelope is a whiz at taking notes, much as Archie Goodwin is a supposed human tape recorder (Nero Wolfe series). It's very convenient to have someone on hand to do nothing but observe and record, thereby giving more credence to the story. There is much name dropping in this and all the other books of the series. Famous characters appear here and there for no apparent reason except to give added spice to the book. I think anyone who likes the Holmes series or who likes to boost the status of women in general will enjoy this book and the ones following it.

"The Woman" is indeed Holmes' equal .....almost!
By Janet H.
If you are a fan of Holmes and know the story of Irene Adler and the "Scandal in Bohemia", this book will whet your Sherlockian appetite for more. Douglas writes in a style quite similar to Conan Doyle and makes Adler come alive as an irresistable heroine and a formidable sleuth as well. Unlike other Conan Doyle copycats, Douglas shows respect for the canon and a true knowledge of Holmesian lore. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, encapsulates biologist Ernst Haeckel’s response to Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Haeckel (German, 1834–1919) published these exquisitely rendered depictions of flora and fauna in ten installments of ten illustrations from 1899 to 1904, aiming to widen the general public’s understanding of naturalism. Haeckel also clearly saw his illustrations as more than just scientific documentation: in introducing one of his plates, he wrote that its patterns would not be out of place in embroideries or on urns and bottles. Haeckel’s elaborate forms have been called a precursor to art nouveau, and his influence even stretched to architecture.

These illustrations derive from a copy of Kunstformen der Natur in the Case Book Collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. The Library holds over 160 million items in almost all media and in more than 470 languages.

Beautiful work of art.
By lueb
This is an incredible book. It is hardback with a glossy cover and 50 single-sided images on thick white paper. The images are taken from biologist Ernst Haeckel's work. They include cleaned up images of such things as radiolarians, shells, and jellyfish. There is also a page that indexes what each page contains. What isn't included are the higher life forms like birds and reptiles for example. The images are standard black and white, greyscale, or black backgrounds with gray scale images. The book is gorgeous, but a bit pricey. I may also get the one by Ernst Haeckel (Author) and David Abbey (Designer) called "Designs in Nature: the coloring book" Paperback – January 25, 2016. It is much cheaper and contains all 100 images. However, they are not cleaned up versions of the original plates like this book. I am torn as to which (or both) book(s) that I want for my collection. I may end up getting/keeping both.

The Way To Bright Star, by Dee Brown

Ben Butterfield, ex-circus performer, is living out his days in a small backwater town. He spends much of his time dwelling on the past, pondering his glory days with the circus, and his first grand adventure―an odyssey across Missouri and Illinois to Bright Star, Indiana, during the Civil War. It was a journey that laid the groundwork for the man he would become, and on which he got to know the two people who meant the world to him, and still do.

In 1862, Ben sets out to help Johnny Hawkes, a resourceful Texican, drive two camels to the farm home of a Yankee officer who has taken possession of the desert beasts as contraband of war. But when Johnny is imprisoned by the Yankees and charged with horse theft, it is up to Ben to complete the task without his friend and mentor. On the threshold of manhood, he has only the help of a young girl, nicknamed Princess, who spends most of the time masquerading as a boy to avoid drawing unwanted attention. Johnny and Princess must stand together and persevere against the odds if they are to overcome every obstacle placed before them on the winding way to Bright Star.

A magnificent tour of 1860s heartland America, The Way to Bright Star is a grand coming-of-age novel, in the tradition of Huckleberry Finn, and destined to become an American classic.

Amazon.com Review
In this rambling road novel, Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, draws on the fascinating historical episode of the U.S. Army's brief flirtation with camels. In the early days of the Civil War, the irascible Union officer Captain Lightfoot purchases two of the beasts from the government and hires wagon master Johnny Hawkes and his teenage sidekick, Ben Butterfield, to deliver the camels to his farm in Bright Star, Indiana. They set off from Texas by wagon, cart, and then on foot, beset with adventures and pursued or joined by various colorful characters along the way, among them a young bank robber who is soon revealed to be a feisty girl named Queen Elizabeth Jones. When Johnny is thrown in a Union prison for stealing back his own horse, young Ben and Elizabeth continue the long line of exploits alone. Shambling along like a dromedary, the story wends its leisurely way over the landscapes of 1862 Missouri and Illinois as the storm clouds of war gather, and country folk choose up sides. Chapters about teenage Ben and Elizabeth's escapades on the road alternate with Ben's reflections (as a randy old man) on the circus stint that followed their cross-country journey. Not an action-packed novel, The Way to Bright Star is nevertheless rich with vignettes portraying the people and lifestyles of late-19th-century rural America. (Ages 15 and older) --Patty Campbell

From Publishers Weekly
Returning to the westerns he tells so well, Brown, best known for Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (1971), takes us on a peculiar odyssey of youth and innocence during the turmoil of the Civil War. The spirited tale opens in 1902, when narrator Ben Butterfield, a gimp-legged former circus horseback performer who is now the harried proprietor of a hardware store, attempts "to set down the story of my wasted life" before he forgets the adventure that was its high point. Forty years earlier, in the spring of 1862 in northwest Arkansas, young Ben embarks on an unlikely journey. A Yankee officer assigns him, cavalry scout Johnny Hawkes and Egyptian cameleer Hadjee the duty of transporting two camels, the officer's own personal contraband, from Arkansas to his farm in Bright Star, Indiana. Traveling across Arkansas and Missouri in 1862 turns out to be a tricky proposition as Ben and his comrades meet Rebs and Yanks, shysters, thieves and all-around mean-spirited folks. After witnessing a bungled bank robbery, Ben's party offers sanctuary to a luckless robber who turns out to be a young girl. Now fugitive themselves, the party is pursued by the law and by a crazy gunman?who is after more than just gold. Short on action but studded with colorful vignettes, this sentimental story reflects, both buoyantly and tenderly, the moments of love, friendship and fame its Huckleberry Finn-like protagonist briefly enjoyed.

From School Library Journal
YA-In this exciting tale, Ben Butterfield, an elderly ex-circus performer, reflects on his life. The story chronicles the experiences of a youthful Ben, his friend and mentor Johnny Hawkes, and a young girl, Princess. In 1862 Ben and Johnny join a wagon train moving baggage and supplies for soldiers marching north from Texas. Two camels and their cameleer, Hadjee, are also with the wagon train when a Union cavalry platoon near Springfield, MO, overtakes the travelers and declares all of the animals to be contraband of war. The platoon commander talks Ben, Johnny, and the faithful Hadjee into driving the camels to his farm in Bright Star, IN. The three set off on a dangerous journey through war-torn territory. When Johnny is captured by the Yankees and charged with stealing a horse (his own), Ben and Hadjee forge ahead to Bright Star with the help of Princess. This story is not only a grand adventure but also deals with friendship, coming-of-age, unity, and perseverance in the face of obstacles. Young adults, particularly those who have read Brown's other books, will delight in this look at life in frontier America.

A journey through a war-torn country
By Bradley Nelson
This is a story of a journey through Missouri, on to Bright Star, Indiana during the Civil War. But the story is really about the travelers and the people they meet along the way. The basic plot is that an Army captain has acquired two camels (brought from Egypt to test in the southwest deserts) and hires Johnny and Ben to take them to his farm in Bright Star.

There is a second, parallel plot line, narrated by Ben some forty years later, reflecting on his memories of the journey to Bright Star. It's an enjoyable read and definitely has a Mark Twain feel to it. There are constant troubles and setbacks, the goal seemingly never reached. They run into a variety of unique characters, many of whom illustrate the hostile attitudes caused by the Civil War. Overall, a pleasant, enjoyable story.

Engaging Novel
By John P. Rooney
"The Way To Bright Star" by Dee Brown. Recorded Books, Inc.1998.
The noted author and Historian of the West, Dee Alexander Brown, has branched out into fiction with this lengthy tale of delivering two camels from Missouri to Bright Star, Indiana. There are really two plot lines in this engaging novel. The first is the telling of the actual driving of the camels from war-torn (Civil War) Missouri to Indiana. It seems that Union Captain Solomon Lightfoot has dreams of a farming empire where camels would replace the horse and the ox. The good Captain "enlists" the services of Johnny Hawkes, young Ben Butterfield and a girl with the name of Jack Bonnycastle. With the aid of the Egyptian camel driver, Hadjee, this little group starts out towards Indiana. Their adventure allows Dee Brown to elicit the mannerisms, language and the simpler culture of a time long ago. This is told in the third person.
The second plot line, in the first person, presents the reminiscences of an older Ben Butterfield. It has to be some forty years later, since the characters discuss the assassination of William McKinley (1843-1901) and wonder if Pres. Roosevelt will be able to handle the office. (That's Teddy Roosevelt!) As the older Ben Butterfield remembers and relates, Dee Brown paints a picture of turn-of-the-century America, a simpler time when the telephone was becoming a jangling nuisance and rowing down a local river was considered a wonderful outing for the more adventurous in the town.
The novel comes to a nostalgic conclusion as the elder Ben Butterfield approaches his old circus that has come to town. He hopes to see his old friend, Jack Bonnycastle, who was really a girl, by the name of "Queen Elizabeth Jones". It seems that this girl had developed into a noted equestrian, who performed before the crowned heads of Europe. Due to a broken leg, Ben had been left behind as Queen Elizabeth and the circus had gone on to fame and glory. Ben Butterfield had always loved Queen Elizabeth Jones. The ending is rather sad but touching.
Tom Stechschulte does an excellent job in reading this book, nine full cassettes. The reader gives an unique and appropriate to the many different characters, ranging from wounded Southern soldiers to Hadjee, who has a little English and a little French. Well done. This presentation helped me to endure Boston Traffic.

An engaging but abrupt slice of Americana
By Amazon Customer
Comparisons to "Huckleberry Finn" or "Cold Sassy Tree" are apt. Like these other novels, "The Way to Bright Star" is an adolescent's journey through an America at war. The people met along the way are the book's greatest strength: soldiers, everyday farmers, a girl in disguise. The dialogue is great, and the settings evoke a time when our county was truly the new frontier.
But the jumps from the Civil War era to the early 19th century can be abrupt, and leave you with a sense of an unfulfillment. The ending in particular was very disappointing, both as flashback and in the narration. Is Mr. Brown planning to make this book a series? If so, the ending will leave you hungry for more. But if this is all there is, you're in a for a disappointing letdown.

The Battle of Corrin (Legends of Dune, Book 3), by Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson

Following their internationally bestselling novels Dune: The Butlerian Jihad and Dune: The Machine Crusade, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson forge a final tumultuous finish to their prequels to Frank Herbert's Dune.

Dune: The Battle of Corrin

It has been fifty-six hard years since the events of The Machine Crusade. Following the death of Serena Butler, the bloodiest decades of the Jihad take place. Synchronized Worlds and Unallied Planets are liberated one by one, and at long last, after years of struggle, the human worlds begin to hope that the end of the centuries-long conflict with the thinking machines is finally in sight.

Unfortunately, Omnius has one last, deadly card to play. In a last-ditch effort to destroy humankind, virulent plagues are let loose throughout the galaxy, decimating the populations of whole planets . . . and once again, the tide of the titanic struggle shifts against the warriors of the human race. At last, the war that has lasted many lifetimes will be decided in the apocalyptic Battle of Corrin.

In the greatest battle in science fiction history, human and machine face off one last time. . . . And on the desert planet of Arrakis, the legendary Fremen of Dune become the feared fighting force to be discovered by Paul Muad'Dib in Frank Herbert's classic, Dune.

From Publishers Weekly
Dune addicts will happily devour Herbert and Anderson's spicy conclusion (after 2003's Dune: The Machine Crusade) to their second prequel trilogy, Legends of Dune. A fearsome robot-engineered plague opens the tumultuous Battle of Corrin, climaxing the century-long galactic war between humans and the computer Omnius's robotic Synchronized Empire. Vorian Atredies, supreme commander of the human Army of the Jihad, initiates the no-holds-barred feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen by exiling Abulurd Harkonnen for cowardice, while Vorian's granddaughter Raquella molds the Sorceress survivors into a biochemically based sisterhood and Ishmael leads his people into Arrakis's sandwormy desert to become Fremen of Dune. All the Dune themes-religion and politics, fanaticism, ecology, opportunism, totalitarianism, the power of myth-exhaustively prepare the way for Frank Herbert's sweeping classic of corruptibility and survival.

From Booklist
What appears to be the end of the Herbert-Anderson Dune prequels opens 56 years after the death of Serena Butler. The Jihad offers hopes of victory over the sentient machines and peace on human terms to a war-scarred galaxy. Unfortunately, the machine leader Omnius conceives a final, desperate, and, coming from a machine intelligence, ironic plan: biological warfare that spreads devastating plagues across scores of human-settled worlds. Herbert and Anderson vividly depict the plagues' effects, although given such a large cast of characters, some readers may feel the emotional impacts of particular characters' fates are rather blunted. The action rises to a thunderous climax in the account of the Battle of Corrin, which occupies a good third of a long book but more than makes up for previous deficiencies in pacing. At the end, we understand why House Corrino sits on the imperial throne, why House Harkonnen is out of favor, why House Atreides is where it is, and why Ishmael has led the ancestors of the Fremen into the desert wastes of the planet known as Arrakis. Thence on, or back, to Frank Herbert's perdurable classic. As before, a job well done. Roland Green

Enjoyed, but not as much as i thought I would....

I'm a huge Dune fan. I figured reading the before math that created the entirety of the Dune series would be awesome. I had trouble reading and accepting Brian's and KJA at first, but I'm not so put off anymore after reading some of their earlier works. I did, however, enjoy getting a back story to the infamous Bulgarian Jihad. They vilified and glorified characters I did not suspect. It seems a bit superfluous at times, but the details work themselves together in the end. All in All...... A great imagination of what Frank Herbert was intending in his original series.

Overall excellent
By David J
This is the third in the prequel series Legends of Dune and continues the backhistory in an impressive manner. Author Brian Herbert (along with his coauthor Kevin J Anderson) totally honors his father's legacy with this well written and very intricate and detailed final book in this earliest prequel series, which ties up all the numerous story lines and also paves the way for the next series. A great read and overall excellent.

Amazon.com Review
Going for Infinity is a wonderful, wide-ranging collection that aptly showcases one of the greatest writers of science fiction and fantasy.

This collection presents some of Anderson's best-known work, interspersed with his own comments on writing and selected memories of his six-decade career. It's a successful combination: Anderson's likeable, thoughtful persona and his powerful, precise fiction balance and enrich each other, bringing fresh context to both. Highlights include "The Saturn Game" with its characteristic blend of science, psychology, and beautiful prose; "The Problem of Pain," which offers a provocative redefinition of the concept of God; and "Goat Song," a chilling reworking of Greek myth.

Anderson (who died in 2001) was a graceful and deeply humanistic writer who used impeccable science and convincing fantasy to explore the complexities of love, death, sacrifice, necessity, and the wonder of the world. This collection is a must-have for his fans and a splendid introduction for readers new to his work. --Roz Genessee

From Publishers Weekly
This posthumous retrospective anthology serves as a valentine to SFWA Grandmaster Anderson's legions of fans, and includes hard SF, first-contact stories, fantasy, detective fiction and sword and sorcery, sometimes melded together in surprising ways. Some tales (e.g., Sam Hall ) show their age but well reflect the writing popular at the time, while others, particularly those that play with fantasy elements (e.g., The Saturn Game ), underscore Anderson's tendency toward densely written, emotive prose, with a dollop of soul-satisfying melodrama. Among samples from his many series are The Master Key, a Nicholas van Rijn story from his Technic History series, and The Problem of Pain, one of his tales of the Poleosotechnic League. Both highlight the great divide between human and alien, but of chief interest is not the misunderstanding between the two but rather the human response to loss. The bittersweet Death and the Knight, part of the Time Patrol sequence, repeats a familiar Time Patrol plot (time traveler gone missing must be rescued), but with a twist. Classic must-read stories include Goat Song and The Queen of Air and Darkness, both of which foreground faerie. And Quest, in the sword-and-sorcery-meets-high-tech world of The High Crusade, posits an outer-space quest for the Holy Grail. Anderson provides brief headnotes for each story, full of anecdotes about fellow SF luminaries. This anthology represents the life's work of one of SF's most enduring and versatile writers.

From Booklist
The 18 pieces the late Anderson chose for this career-spanning collection offer an embarrassment of riches. Three selections--"Goat Song," "The Queen of Air and Darkness," and "The Saturn Game"--won major sf and fantasy awards, and three others, though they aren't all extracts from them, "represent," Anderson says, his novels The High Crusade (1960), Three Hearts and Three Lions (1961), and A Midsummer Tempest (1974). Revolution is explored in "Sam Hall," telepathy in the grim "Journey's End," and loss in "Kyrie." Anderson's best-known character, Nicholas van Rijn, appears in "The Master Key," and one of the two winged alien races he created (the best of their kind), the Ythrians, features in "The Problem of Pain." Barring any discoveries among Anderson's effects, the introductions to the stories constitute the nearest thing to an autobiography that we will ever see; in any event they round out an excellent introduction to him. Now how about reprinting some of his most notable novels, starting with Tau Zero (1970)? Roland Green

Science, philosophy, poetry
By Daniel J. Smitherman
"Going for Infinity" contains eighteen stories by Poul Anderson, written over the course of a half-century. Fifty years is an immensely long time in the history of science fiction. It almost is the history of science fiction. In terms of literature, though, fifty years is nothing. Science fiction has hardly begun its life in human culture. No wonder, then, that it has changed so much since its birth, just like a baby does in its first few years. From mute and helpless infant, to crawler and communicator, to walker and talker.

Poul Anderson's writing covers in time most of the life of the genre of science fiction, but the stories in Going for Infinity range less widely in style and substance than the genre as a whole. Anderson says in the Introduction:

"What [Robert Gleason, my editor] had in mind [for this book] was not simply another collection, but a retrospective - besides stories, something about their origins, backgrounds, contexts, a historical overview of the science fiction and fantasy field throughout those decades."

Then Anderson immediately follows with:

"Of course, this isn't really possible. I have been only one writer among many, and how wonderfully diverse a lot they were and are! "

Anderson's own stories in this collection are largely the product of a fairly straightforward synergy of contemporary science (contemporary to the time of writing), and imagination. In introducing the first story, "The Saturn Game," published in 1981, he recounts his visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory a few years later "to witness Voyager One's flyby of this very planet." Anderson had also written another story set on the Saturnine moon Iapetus. Anderson wondered,

Would my speculation prove completely mistaken? It's a risk that science fiction always takes, a risk that in the long run becomes an inevitability. But would this piece of mine have any run of might-be-so at all?

This realism, this concern that a story fit the facts, characterizes most of Anderson's stories in "Going for Infinity." These are not William Gibson stories. Most of them are science fiction as a backdrop of unfamiliarity against which the ordinary - but lonely, sad, evil, good, beautiful - stands out in a new and exciting way, or maybe just a simpler, more obvious, less complicated way. Economics, democracy, religion - these are all examined anew under the strange light of an unfamiliar sun.

Another mark of Anderson's stories is the emphasis on the writing itself. He tells stories, but even more he paints images and composes music in language. Not just fantasy clichés of `purple mountains on the horizon', but lines crafted from a conscious and deliberate wielding of language and words and rhythm and space. This, I think, is the most satisfying element of Anderson's work here.

There is more to enjoy, though. Anderson introduces every story with comments on the story itself, or its inception, context, or repercussions. He mentions other writers, other times, other ideas. For Anderson fans, this will surely be welcomed.

Though this collection mostly is of a realistic style, there is some other more fantastic pieces mixed in. "Goat Song" is one of these. Published in 1972, this story was somehow influenced by another science fiction story, "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," and Cocteau's film Orpheus. It seems appropriate that this story struck me as the most contemporary, regardless of publication date.

"Going for Infinity" is definitely a worthwhile collection to own, and Anderson's stories more than worth reading.

Homage to a grandmaster
By A Customer
GOING FOR INFINITY pays homage to one of the speculative fiction's greatest authors of the twentieth century by providing a taste of Poul Anderson's works as well as his retrospective thoughts over the six decades he wrote. The tales run the gamut of science fiction and fantasy with mystery thrown in showing how diverse a writer Mr. Anderson was. Some of the science fiction seems obsolete, but when looked from a historiographic perspective provides insight into the times the stories were written and into the mind of a creative individual. The fantasies and detective contributions hold up better as they clearly show Mr. Anderson's real talent of turning the obviously impossible into something that feels real and genuine; thus leaving the awed audience celebrating the classic works of a noteworthy renaissance writer.

A Tour De Force : the Author's Picks
By j michael rowland
No single volume can encompass the "best of" an author like Poul Anderson, whose career spanned the history of, and set many of the benchmarks for the mixed genres of fantasy and hard science fiction. This volume is, rather, a collection of milestones that he, looking back, has identified along the way. Some are dated in their concepts and language (which he tells you up front, and they come by it honestly), but each presents you with a glittering gem of science fiction / fantasy history whose underlying ideas are as fresh today as when they first appeared. Above all, Poul Anderson understands and exalts the language. When you read a given verbal structure in an Anderson story, it is immediately clear to you, even if the verbiage is not commonplace, why it is worded the way it is and what it means. His prose often evokes the same exalted, multireferential effect that one receives from good poetry. As icing on this entirely edible cake, each story is placed in context with a brief preface provided by the author. This is a treasure.

One of the things Bill Evans enjoys the most is talking to young people about weather. Middle-schoolers in particular, Evans says, are deeply interested in the natural world and in weather.

It's Raining Fish and Spiders covers everything, from tornadoes and hurricanes to lightning and the different kinds of snowflakes. Evans addresses weather myths and facts, from "Can it really rain fish?" to "Will opening a window save my house during a tornado?"

Evans also tells his most exciting personal weather stories: flying with the Hurricane Hunters, riding pell-mell through Tornado Alley with storm chasers, and visiting the coldest place on Earth. The book includes simple weather experiments that can be performed at home without expensive equipment.

Extensively researched, fact-filled, and packed with charts, tables, illustrations, and amazing photographs, It's Raining Fish and Spiders is an entertaining and educational addition to the library of anyone interested in weather, science, and the natural world.

Weather junkies and those who like to scrutinize charts will be entertained by this folksy work, which is chock-full of information, lists, and accounts of personal experiences involving extreme weather by meteorologist and TV personality Evans. Included are sections on tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards, with a good amount of information on each and a healthy dose of photos and diagrams sprinkled throughout. Each section includes a lengthy True Bill Evans Weather Story detailing Evans’ harrowing experiences with each type of phenomenon. The final section is a hodgepodge of information and lists about droughts, floods, tsunamis, volcanoes, and earthquakes, and additional extreme weather, such as thunderstorms. The strange occurrence of creatures falling from the sky is covered only briefly. Although the cover proclaims that experiments are included, there is only one experiment and a few lists of websites to find others. The blue-toned photos might be a deterrent to some. Enjoyable for browsing but of limited use for research or reference because of the absence of an index. Grades 5-8. --Randall Enos
