After less than a year in Ballybucklebo, Barry Laverty is settling into the village, and with only a few more months to go before he becomes a full partner in Dr. O'Reilly's medical practice, Barry's looking forward to becoming a fixture in the community. But an unexpected romantic reversal gives him second thoughts. As much as Barry enjoys the rough and tumble of life in County Down, is tending to routine coughs and colds in a humble G.P.'s shop all he wants out of life?
Doctor Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly is going through personal upheavals as well. After mourning his deceased wife for decades, he's finally allowed a new woman into his life. But this budding courtship is not going over well with Kinky Kincaid, the doctors' housekeeper, who fears having her position usurped by O'Reilly's new flame.
Meanwhile, life goes on in Ballybucklebo. From a mysterious outbreak at the local school to a complicated swindle involving an unlucky race horse, the two doctors will need all of their combined wit and compassion to put things right again―just in time for their lives to change forever.

Set in the 1965, this gentle slice-of-life novel is the fifth in a series about life in the colorful Ulster village of Ballybucklebo. The only doctor in town, Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly, is looking for a partner and welcomes younger doctor Barry Laverty into his home and his practice. After being suddenly and publicly dumped by his girlfriend of a few months, Laverty is unsure if he wants to stay in the small town. Trying to convince him to stay, O’Reilly involves Laverty in various town intrigues, including a complicated horse-betting swindle being run by a local politician on a group of tradesmen. At the same time, the widowed O’Reilly attempts to rekindle a romance from his youth. O’Reilly’s stoic, painful attempt to build a new life for himself contrasts sharply with Laverty and his excessive whining about the breakup of a relatively short-term relationship. The town is stocked with a Hollywood-worthy cast of supporting characters, including busybodies, eccentrics, and a beautiful schoolteacher. Appendixes include a glossary for readers not familiar with Gaelic slang and recipes for dishes made in the book. --Marta Segal Block
Review
"Welcome to the colourful Ulster village of Ballybucklebo, where two overworked doctors work hand in hand to mend the bodies and spirits of the town's diverse and engaging inhabitants. But who is looking after the wounded hearts of the doctors? Taylor masterfully charts the small victories and defeats of Irish village life." - Irish American Magazine"

Another wonderful novel by Patrick Taylor
By Holly
This is the fifth book in the Irish Country series (1 - "Irish Country Doctor", 2 - "Irish Country Village", 3 - "Irish Country Christmas", 4 - "Irish Country Girl", and 5 - "An Irish Country Courtship"). My first experience was the Christmas story which hooked me and I had to go back to the beginning and read them all. Every book has been wonderful and this fifth book is no exception.
Regarding the series as a whole: They are set in rural Ireland during the 1960s. The main characters are the established older doctor (Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly) who is bringing a younger doctor (Barry Laverty) into his practice to help ease the growing workload. The two physicians don't limit themselves to helping the residents of Balleybucklebo with their physical complaints. It seems that they end up with their fingers in many pies and the villagers look to them for their wisdom in helping with all life's problems. Mrs. Kinky Kincaid is the housekeeper and friend that looks over them and takes care of the home fires while these two run all over the countryside ministering to those who need them.
The last book ("An Irish Country Girl") took a detour and was primarily the story of Mrs. Kincaid and her early life in the 1920s prior to coming to Balleybucklebo. This latest installment finds us back at Balleybucklebo and Barry Laverty is the primary focus this time out. Barry's romantic life takes an unexpected turn and he finds himself questioning what it is he really wants to do as his life's work. Councillor Bertie Bishop has hatched another scheme to make himself financially richer and has trapped some of the locals into a losing proposition.
From the first novel through this fifth one, they have all been an absolute joy to read. The author is Irish (and a doctor as well) so everything authentic and the dialect/speech patterns used make you feel that you are a fly on the wall listening to the characters of this delightful little village. From the opening page until the last, I found myself totally immersed in village life and transported to another place and time. Make sure to look at the glossary in the back of the book - it will help with the Irish terminology.
Like all other novels in this series, the story unfolds gently and meanders around with slow (but wonderful) story development and not a lot of "action". If you enjoy slice-of-life books with a strong sense of place and time, this may be the perfect choice. I have found that I wait until I know I won't be rushed or hurried and will have the time to slowly savor each and every page before picking up Patrick Taylor's novels to read.
Beautiful writing, beautiful setting and a transport to a gentler time and place. One of my all-time favorites.

FANTASTIC CONTINUATION
By Marvin W. Reed
Dr. Taylor has taken the readers of his series on another fantastic trip to Ireland. This particular book brought to mind several expierences I had during my own life, which brought both joy & sorrow. However, this proves Dr. Taylor can touch the lives of his readers which is a good thing. Understand from Dr. Taylor's web site there will be another book " An Irish Country Partnership " which will be available in 2011. Am extremely anxious for this book to be published. Highly recommend this series not only because of the Irish settings but for anyone who enjoys visiting a small town with interesting characters along with interesting situations in their lives. Read and enjoy your trip to Ballybucklebo !!

Another Hit By Taylor
By Amazon Customer
Once again Patrick Taylor's talent and flair to tell a story will keep the reader engrossed from page to page, chapter to chapter, and from beginning to end. The original cast of characters returns the reader to Ballybucklebo and the daily life of a country GP. Kinky Kincaid, Barry Laverty, Dr. O'Reilly himself, and of course the ever bothersome Councilor Bertie Bishop spurs the story forward. Only to eclipse the original cast of characters is Taylor's prose and original Irish brogue he has bestowed in the dialog of the characters.
In An Irish Country Courtship youthful dating tribulations continue to haunt Barry Laverty with his true love, Patricia. Dr. O'Reilly's relationship with Kitty O'Hallorhan blossoms into a love affair for the time and ages. Their relationship takes a hiccup when Kitty and Kinky have a mix-up. They are confused about Kitty's prominence at #1 Main Street and put O'Reilly in the unwanted middle. O'Reilly, being the calming force is caught in the middle of the two women who covet his attention. We return to the race tracks as Councilor Bishop, matches wits with Dr. Reilly's when he tries to con some of the hard working resident's of Ballybucklebo, including O'Reilly's partner-in-good, Donal Donnelly.
Taylor's knowledge of the era and local of the Irish countryside only enhance the story. Patrick Taylor continues to surpass his latest work with each written novel.
