Dragon and Herdsman: The Fourth Dragonback Adventure, by Timothy Zahn

Jack Morgan has had it rough. He was orphaned at three, then lost his Uncle Virgil ten years later. But the plucky fourteen-year-old didn't know what rough was until he met Draycos, sole survivor of an advance force of alien refugees that had been brutally ambushed over the world where Jack was in hiding from the authorities. The K'da poet-warrior needed to bond with a host, or he would die; the reformed boy thief and con artist needed a friend, someone he could depend on as he tried to clear his name. Since then they've formed a unique team, determined to find and expose those responsible for the slaughter of Draycos's team.

In the months since fate threw them together, they've been through a lot. But when Jack tries to hack the computer in an office of the notorious Malison Ring, their quest nearly ends in the jaws of that mercenary organization's trap.

Luckily, Alison Kayna, a girl Jack had worked with as a reluctant mercenary for another outfit, comes to his rescue. Evading pursuit, they escape to the primitive world of Rho Scorvi, where she's planned a rendezvous with friends.

But at the edge of Rho Scorvi's hundred-mile-wide forest, they make a shocking discovery: traveling with a group of the planet's native Erassvas is a small lost colony of Draycos's own race, the K'da. But unlike Draycos's people, these K'da--known as Phookas--are slow, lethargic, and unintelligent. When the Malison Ring tracks Jack's ship, the Essenay to Rho Scorvi, Jack realizes that unless he and Draycos and a reluctant Alison can lead the Phookas to safety in the forest, these unfortunate creatures will become the latest victims of the genocide that threatens to wipe out their entire race.

Jack has already been a thief, a soldier, and a slave. Now he must become a herdsman, protecting the Phookas from danger as they travel deep into the unexplored forest. But even more importantly, he must protect from the mercenaries and Alison the dark secret of the herd and Jack's poet-warrior ally. Only if they succeed do they stand a chance of surviving Rho Scorvi to continue their quest . . .

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–Jack Morgan, a 14-year-old orphaned thief on a distant planet, is the symbiont (biological partner) of Draycos, a wise, dragonlike alien. Jack and Draycos are on the run from a squadron of bad guys called the Malison Ring after Jack tries to break into their computer system. They, along with their sometime-friend Alison, temporarily escape to the wilderness of the planet Rho Scorvi, where they encounter a herd of beasts, the Phookas, very much like Draycoss Kda people, but with seemingly little intelligence. When the Malison Ring arrives and starts tearing up the forest in pursuit of Jack, he must become a herdsman of the Phookas while trying to save their lives and his own. Each volume in this adventure saga reveals a little more about the reticent Kda and about Jack, who grows from a heedless boy to a true hero. Great escape reading for classic sci-fi fans.–Walter Minkel, New York Public Library

Something In Their Food?
By Arthur W Jordin
Dragon and Herdsman (2006) is the fourth novel in the Dragonback series, following Dragon and Slave. In the previous volume, Jack escapes from the Chookoock family estate with 30 ex-slaves in Arthur Neverlin's shuttle. Although he never gets into the Chookoock computer system, he does discover that the Malison Ring mercenaries had ambushed the Shontine/K'da advance party.

In this novel, Jack breaks into a Malison Ring recruiting office, but is trapped inside. He is rescued from the building by his former associate Alison Kayna. When they reach the spaceport, her ship is invested with Braxton Universis agents, so Jack gives her a ride to Rho Scorvi. She pays for the fuel on the eight day trip.

Alison seems very well informed about spaceships, even discovering the existence of his InterWorld transmitter. Although she is suspicious, Jack keeps secret the existence of Uncle Virge. He also hides the presense of Draycos.

Reaching their destination, Jack discovers that the native Erassvas are symbionts with the Phookas. These creatures have all the physical characteristics of the K'da, but not the intellectual abilities. They can even go two-dimensional on their hosts. Draycos is very disturbed over their good natured, yet animalistic behavior.

Then Malison Ring ships arrive. The Essenay destroys the two Djinn-90 fighters, but vanishes in an explosion. The remaining transport lands and disembarks mercenary soldiers.

Jack takes all the Phookas in the band as well as ten Erassvas for hosts and herds them through the forest. Alison reluctantly tags along. Draycos keeps hidden, but slips out occasionally to scout around and to ambush the mercenaries whenever an opportunity occurs.

This novel reintroduces Alison, the somewhat friendly, and always suspicious, mercenary recruit with too much knowledge of soldiering. Keeping her from noticing the Phookas slipping on and off their hosts is just plain tiring and Jack cannot let her notice the off and on again nature of his "tattoo". Then the "Kodiak" attacks his herd and Alison doesn't have a clear shot.

The slow and unintelligent Phookas raise unsettling questions within Draycos. Are all his racial legends a lie? A silver-gray Phooka with silver eyes starts to follow Jack or himself with a puzzled look. He calls her Taneem, after a childhood friend who has since died in the fighting against the Valahgua. Taneem is very attractive, but DUMB.

Highly recommended for Dragonback fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of derring-do with an alien companion.

Dragon and Herdsman
By Mary F. Platter-rieger
Very entertaining story; this book is the fourth in a continuing series. I especially enjoy the interplay between honor, ethics, different cultures, and survival, as well as a great action plot. Please, hurry up and write the next one!

Fantastic
By Hiziki Gard
This book is the fourth book in Timothy Zahn's young adult series written about teenagers. Though some seem to be under contrary impressions, Zahn did write this with young adults in mind.

The book is very good. Though occasionally simplistic in style, the plot is anything but. The characters are, if not overly complex, then definitely believable. You take clear sides in the book, and you want to see it to the finish. The premise is compelling, and the plot is tense.

"Dragon and Herdsman" doesn't lose your attention. It doesn't slack in the surprises provided by the last three books. It keeps stringing the reader along with hints about the science and psychology of the dragons, and the massive conspiracy that plans to destroy the remainder of the K'da race.

Overall, a good read and a good buy.

I LOVE SSRW!!! I know that "anything works" if you use it....but this program does a beautiful job in so many ways, I could write a chapter on why I like it. I used it with my firstborn---and for his 3 siblings. I homeschooled all of them---still working on the last one----and 2 are now college graduates. The first graduated Summa Cum Laude from a state university (with only 3 years post-high school time in college); the second 'child' graduated Magna Cum Laude from the same state university. The last two....we'll see! BUT----they ALL learned to read using this wonderful system.

When the Beast Ravens, by E. Rose Sabin

The thrilling conclusion to the award-winning fantasy trilogy that began with A School for Sorcery...
As Gray Becq is about to discover, there are fates worse than death. It has been a full year since his escape from the Dire Realm. A year since a fellow student--having used his powers of sorcery to league himself with dark forces--betrayed him. Locked him away in a world beyond time, a world of unspeakable evil and unbearable tortures. Had it not been for Tria Tesserell and her extraordinary powers, he surely would have died. Now he almost wishes he had.
For no sooner has Becq adjusted himself to the familiar surroundings of The Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted than a series of horrible accidents occur. Suspicion falls on Gray. Could he have brought a demon back with him from the Dire Realm? To find the truth, Gray will have to confront the most powerful demon he has ever faced: the demon that lies within.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-The trilogy that began with A School for Sorcery (2002) and continued in A Perilous Power (2004, both Tor) sloshes to a roiling, melodramatic conclusion in this book. Gray Becq, who was trapped in the infernal Dire Realm in the first book, has returned to the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted, but he cannot shake the terror he has experienced. Soon after the new school year starts, a student is brutally attacked and nearly killed, and suspicion falls on moody, irritable Gray. Could he have brought back a demon from the Dire Realm? Fellow student Rehanne, who loves him, can't believe he's guilty, and she searches for the culprit. More students are assaulted, several die, and it grows clear that still others are hiding secrets that may reveal the killer's identity. This book will appeal to many Harry Potter fans; spells fly, and readers watch young men and women grapple with new powers they're discovering in the midst of crisis. However, Sabin lacks J. K. Rowling's ability to make one truly care about her student magicians, as well as her sense of humor. As a whole, this trilogy doesn't hang together well; there's no central character and no grand design to the story line. Diana Wynne Jones's witty "Chrestomanci" books (HarperCollins) are better choices for those building fantasy collections.-Walter Minkel, New York Public Library

From Booklist
The riveting conclusion of Sabin's unconventionally published fantasy trilogy (the earliest-set book, A Perilous Power (2003), was published after its chronological successor) turns to the school year succeeding the one that A School for Sorcery (2002) chronicled. The pace is fast and furious as messy murders occur on campus. Tria's manipulative former roommate, Lina, who has the talent to shape-shift into a panther, is suspected, and so is Oryon, who turned to the dark side in School, and Gray Becq, who still hasn't recovered from the horrors of betrayal by Oryon and captivity in the Dire Realm, and who possibly brought a demon back with him. Suspicions blossom throughout the school for the magically gifted as faculty and students try to get to the bottom of the mystery. Can the students unite to uncover the culprit and defeat the demons that have entered from the Dire Realm? Sally Estes

"A tale that should appeal to fans of Harry Potter. Well-written, with memorable characters and a readable style, this title belongs in most fantasy and YA collections."--Library Journal on A Perilous Power "Harry Potter fans rejoice!...This is an excellent choice for those who ask, after they read Harry Potter, 'What can I read next?' "--KLIATT on A School for Sorcery

"Comparisons to Harry Potter are justified, and the same readers will enjoy discovering this book. Nevertheless, Sabin creates a fascinating world of her own. The pacing and climactic scenes of this novel will surely keep . . . readers racing to the end."--VOYA on A School for Sorcery

When the plot unravels
By EA Solinas
E. Rose Sabin's fantasy trilogy spins to a fast-paced, unsatisfying finale in "When the Beast Ravens." It starts with a suspenseful murder mystery and some serious personal issues, but unravels in the final chapter, as if Sabin had gotten sick of the story.

It's been two years since Gray Becq was kidnapped and enspelled in the Dire Realms. He returns to the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted, but can't shake his paranoia and fear. And then odd things happen: wands and talismans go missing, and rooms are ripped up. Then a student is near-fatally attacked.

As more students die and the mystery deepens, Gray gets more moody and erratic, and even has lapses in memory. Did he bring a demon back from the Dire Realms? To find the answer -- and the murderer -- Gray must team up with the two powerful young Gifted who almost destroyed the school two years ago...

Though there are a few references to the prequel, this book mainly stems from "A School for Sorcery," a sort of wizard-high-school book. Sabin's writing has improved greatly, and this is tighter, tenser story with plenty of potential. But the ending just sort of putters to a stop.

The first nine-tenths of the book are exceptional. Sabin spins together fantasy -- demons, spells and shapeshifters -- with a compelling murder mystery. Additionally, panther-girl Lina gets captured and interrogated by some nasty police who hate the Gifted. Some truly great storylines, especially Gray being forced to trust and care for his nemesis Oryon, and some of them blossom over the course of the book.

Unfortunately, the solid storyline unravels by the end. After some truly touching, moving scenes, we're treated to a silly trial scene that includes the dead accusing their murderer. All I could think of was "bring out your dead." The final pages seem tacked on, and Gray's final decision seems completely out of the blue.

If "When the Beast Ravens" is the end of E. Rose Sabin's trilogy, then it shouldn't be one. Starts strong, continues strong, and finishes very, very weakly. Here's hoping that Gray's story isn't over yet.

delightful trilogy for Harry Potter fans
By A Customer
After being taken by the dire women into their dimension, he was tortured and changed into a beast. Gray Becq is no longer enamored with the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted though he returns there following his summer vacation. He quickly gets into a fight with two of the people who summoned the creatures from the Dire Realms.

Not long after somebody steals artifacts from the students and a demon enters this world. The Headmistress believes that Gray's return from the Dire Realm allowed the demon to enter this dimension. The concern is that they have no spell to send the demon home to the Dire Realm. The students are guarded with seemingly unbreakable spells, but someone manages to do the impossible. Everyone concludes that a killer is bringing in demons from the Dire Realm and using them to break the safety spells. Gray discovers that he hasthe power to travel through different timelines and dimensions. His former enemies join forces with him to battle their common foes and send the demons back to the hell where they belong.

This is the final book of a delightful trilogy that ties up the loose ends from A SCHOOL FOR SORCERY and A PERILOUS POWER, which obviously means reading the previous novels first. The climax is awesome as the students put aside their jealousies to forge a team knowing this is the only chance, remote as that is, to defeat the overwhelming adversaries. Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this fine series especially this terrific conclusion.

The Last Dark Place: An Abe Lieberman Mystery (Abe Lieberman Mysteries), by Stuart M. Kaminsky

One of Stuart M. Kaminsky's most memorable characters, Abe Lieberman is a veteran detective who uses his head and heart more than his gun. Lieberman loves what he does and this takes a toll as his commitment to what is right is sorely tested every day on the mean streets of Chicago. As a moral man, he is sometimes faced with uncomfortable ethical choices in order to see that justice--rather than the letter of the law-is meted out.

With The Last Dark Place, Lieberman and his Irish partner Bill Hanrahan, known on the streets as the Rabbi and the Priest, have their hands full with dark matters both professional and personal.

Lieberman goes to Arizona on an extradition case to pick up a mob enforcer that goes horribly awry when the man he is slated to bring back is gunned down at the airport. He comes back from this disaster determined to find out who arranged the hit, and explain to his superiors just how he could have let this happen on his watch.

And there's the little matter of pulling off Lieberman's grandson's bar mitzvah, which threatens to bankrupt him.

While Lieberman is away, Hanrahan has his hands full. Coupled with a temporary partner who is racist, sexist and a general bane of human existence, Hanrahan has to deal with a rape case involving the young wife of a fellow police officer. Hanrahan must race to find the culprits because he knows homicidal rage when he sees it and knows that it is only a matter of time before the officer takes the law into his own hands.

And then there's a young man who dreams of being a star...or killing one to get the notoriety.

From Publishers Weekly
Edgar-winner Kaminsky's eighth Abe Lieberman mystery (after 2002's Not Quite Kosher) gets off to a dramatic start. After a prologue in which a gunman confronts a young Lieberman in the middle of a morning prayer service in 1969, the action flashes forward 33 years to find the sardonic 60-something Chicago cop handcuffed to the same gunman, a professional assassin facing extradition back to the Windy City. When an unassuming elderly janitor shocks the veteran lawman by gunning down the assassin in the airport, Lieberman takes on the thankless task of identifying the person who ordered the hit. As that inquiry proceeds, Lieberman tries to defuse a Latin-Asian gang war. Meanwhile, Lieberman's Irish partner, Bill Hanrahan, juggles a rape case and a stalker who's targeting his pregnant wife. Long on vigilante justice, the book succeeds more as a character study than as a whodunit, though the resolution of the sexual-assault inquiry does contain a decent twist. The confluence of the plot threads might strike some as far-fetched, but Kaminsky's sympathetic hero and his believable family relationships make this an entertaining crime novel that should send new readers in search of its predecessors.

From Booklist
The eighth entry in Kaminsky's Abe Lieberman series about two embattled North Side Chicago cops should delight fans but confuse and frustrate newcomers. Fans of Kaminsky's work in other series (Toby Peters, Inspector Rostnikov, Lew Fonesca) will find him a tight-lipped guide here. There is barely any backstory about the two cops, one Irish (Hanrahan), one Jewish (Lieberman), or their lives, and much depends on backstory in this series. But for the Lieberman true believers, this installment is rich in conflict and atmosphere. Lieberman has been sent to Yuma, Arizona, for the extradition of a Mob hitman, who himself gets whacked while handcuffed to Lieberman at the airport. On the home front, partner Hanrahan and an insufferable substitute partner are trying to track down youths who practice assault and battery, most notably on the wife of an up-and-coming Chicago cop. It's great to see the growth of these two characters and their relationship throughout the series, but anyone trying to start the series by leaping onto this moving sidewalk is sure to stumble. For fans only. Connie Fletcher

One for the old folks!
By Dave Schwinghammer
I've been a Porfiry Rostnikov fan forever. But since Kaminsky hasn't written a Porfiry mystery in well over three years I decided to try one of his other series.

The Abe Liebermann series has quite a bit in common with the Rostnikov mysteries. Both protagonists are over sixty and both are dedicated family men. But perhaps the major similarity is the Ed McBain influence. Rostnikov has a couple of underlings who are usually involved in their own cases. Liebermann has a partner named Bill Hanrahan, who calls Abe "The Rabbi." Abe calls Hanrahan "Father Murphy." These are working cops and they have more cases than a Budweiser brewery.

The book starts with Abe escorting a Mafia hitman back to Chicago from Yuma, Arizona. An elderly janitor shoots the hitman before Abe can get him on the plane. The janitor is an elderly man who claims he agreed to the contract to pay for his grandchildren's college.

Back in Chicago, Hanrahan and his temp partner, O'Neil are investigating a series of muggings and rapes. Hanrahan must also deal with O'Neil's racist and sexist remarks as well as the crime spree.

This wouldn't be a Kaminsky mysteries if the detectives didn't have personal problems to match their professional concerns. Liebermann's grandson, who lives with Liebermann and his wife, is having his bar mitzvah and Liebermann is trying to scrape together the money to pay for it. His daughter, with whom he doesn't get along, is also arriving for her son's big day. Meanwhile, someone has been calling Hanrahan's pregnant Chinese wife, warning her not to have the child.

Throw in the case of a sign painter, who is stalking a country western singer, whom he wants to kill, and you have quite a few story lines to keep track of.

Probably the most impressive aspect of the book for me was the theme of "respect for family and the elderly" that runs throughout the book. For instance, when Abe's grandson tells Abe he doesn't think he should go through with his bar mitzvah because he doesn't believe in God, Abe convinces him to do it for his grandmother, his other relatives, and all of the people who were looking forward to the event. Mr. Woo, an elderly Chinese crime lord, negotiates a truce between the Puerto Rican and Chinese gangs. Kaminsky puts a capper on this theme when the most deplorable human being in the book takes the fall for his grandmother when she's implicated in a shooting.

A gem
By Jerry Saperstein
I've only recently discovered police procedurals. Or should I say compelling, interesting police procedurals? I've read others along the way, but until I discovered John Sandford's "Prey" series, I found them trite and boring for the most part.

Now with my discovery of Stuart M. Kaminsky and his Abe Lieberman character, I admit to becoming a fan.

Abe Lieberman is a 60-ish Chicago detective. I should note that this is Kaminsky's eigth Lieberman book, so presumably he started the series with a younger man.

Lieberman is no superman. He has ordinary problems like high cholesterol, insomnia and an adult daughter who can't find happiness, so blames her father for her unhappiness.

The story begins with Lieberman in Yuma, Arizona, about to escourt a prisoner back to Chicago. An elderly black airport janitor kills Lieberman's prisoner at the boarding gate - and we're off to a cop's life.

Hannrahan, Abe's partner, is an Irish Catholic, a reformed alcoholic, with a second wife. In Lieberman's absence, Hannrahan is teamed with O'Neill, who appears to be extreme racist.

Life's misfortunes provide the cloud through which these men. Elderly Jews gathering at Leiberman's brother's delicatessen; a bunch of kids who get their kicks beating and finally murdering and raping women on the street; a demented young man who happily sets out to kill a rising celebrity. It's all part of day's work for Lieberman and his colleagues.

Several stories at once flow in the narrative and Kaminsky keeps them all straight, never missing a beat, never forcing the reader to suspend credulity.

Kaminsky and Lieberman have a new fan.

A thrilling 8th novel in the Abe Lieberman series
By Bookreporter
Part of the appeal of mystery novels comes from the multiple vehicles that authors use as Connelly's Harry Bosch and Ed McBain's Steve Carella. Recently, however, a new cop on the block has appeared on my book table, Detective Abe Lieberman of the Chicago Police Department.

THE LAST DARK PLACE by Stuart M. Kaminsky is the eighth novel featuring the sixty-year old Chicago detective confronting the crimes of a big city along with the difficulties of life. Lieberman is a Job-like figure, a small, cynical and fatalistic man looking ten years older than his actual age, battling crime and his cholesterol count at the same time. He resides on the North Side of Chicago and does the majority of his crime fighting in the Rogers Park area of the city, a modern ethnic melting pot for Jews, Hispanics, Asians and even Caucasian criminals. The trademark of a Lieberman escapade is a juggling act of multiple crimes, committed by several criminals investigated by Lieberman and his Irish Catholic partner Bill Hanrahan, "the Rabbi and the Priest," as they are known on the streets of Chicago. Compounding his crime solving battles are the personal predicaments in Lieberman's life --- from his children, grandchildren, synagogue and community.

The opening scenes of THE LAST DARK PLACE find Lieberman in an Arizona airport handcuffed to Connie Glover, a fugitive from justice that the detective is returning to Chicago. Before they can board the plane, Glover is gunned down, and finding out why the killer was killed becomes Lieberman's next assignment.

Abe Lieberman is more than a police detective. He is a mixture of philosopher, psychologist, rabbi and diplomat. In the melting pot neighborhoods of Chicago, the turf wars between rival ethnic gangs are of prime concern to law enforcement. Lieberman has the respect of the community and he wields his respect as a neighborhood Henry Kissinger, using his skills to mediate and avoid disputes while always being prepared for the use of force if required. Kaminsky, a former resident of the North Shore area, has a remarkable insight into the various communities and nationalities that populate the Chicago area. Through the vehicle of Abe Lieberman he creates characters who are real, and plots that are both simple and complex while always enjoyable and expertly crafted.

Celebrated fictional detectives are engaging because they do more than solve mysteries. Along the way they often face personal dilemmas easily identified by most readers. Abe Lieberman is not only a detective; he is a father and grandfather. Life's personal difficulties take as much of his time as the misdeeds of the criminals he tackles on his job. In THE LAST DARK PLACE, his grandson's bar mitzvah requires Lieberman's attention. That event demands that he cope with major financial and philosophical issues while continuing his criminal investigation. This is the balancing act that is Lieberman's life. He can successfully face those problems because, above all, Abe Lieberman is a mensch, a Yiddish word meaning decent human being, a good person who always takes the high road.

V: The Second Generation, by Kenneth Johnson

Millions thrilled to Kenneth Johnson's hugely popular mini-series "V," an action filled drama of alien invasion, a TV event that was also a number one bestselling novel. Now, in a new novel based on the sequel miniseries currently being developed for TV, the tension between The Visitors and Earth's human inhabitants has reached a boiling point.

The reptilian Visitors, who cleverly portray themselves as Earth's protectors, are anything but. Our oceans are being drained in order to fuel the aliens' motherships, and our scientists are treated like wanted criminals. And they have pods of preserved humans destined for even more sinister purposes.

But hope is not lost. A small, yet resourceful Resistance risks everything to undermine the Visitors' stranglehold on Earth's people. Despite their heroic efforts, without more help they will be crushed by the Visitors and their human militia. Just when Earth's doom seems inevitable, agents of an alien civilization from another planet arrive in answer to humanity's desperate call for help. But can these other aliens be trusted? Or might we defeat one alien overlord, only to be delivered into the hands of another, equally as oppressive?

Time is running out for the Resistance, for when the Visitors' Leader arrives, the aliens will complete their mission on Earth, with devastating consequences for all life on the planet.

From Publishers Weekly
Johnson has been writing television science fiction (The Six Million Dollar Man; Alien Nation) for over three decades. Anticipating the 2008 television spin-off from the cult classic miniseries V, Johnson has created this insubstantial tie-in novel. Twenty years after invading, the Visitors now have a solid chokehold on Earth's scientists, intellectuals, celebrities and natural resources. While there remains an active resistance movement, they cannot stop the domination of Earth on their own. Enter the alien Zedti. Enemies of the Visitors (though sharing their general lack of concern for individual human lives), the Zedti come to the aid of the resistance efforts. Throughout, it remains ambiguous whether the Zedti are truly friends of humanity. The plethora of whiz-bang action scenes and huge cast of underdeveloped characters make this more of a primer for the new miniseries than a novel worth reading in its own right.

Review
Praise for the miniseries "V"

"A space age version of "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." -Kenneth Clark, UPI

"…The best kind of science fiction: the kind that makes you think about the meaning of life on Earth. 'V' is a morality tale, a story of how people react in the face of overwhelming tyranny. It's prime-grade television." -Nick Coleman, Minneapolis Star & Tribune

" 'V' harbors a great deal of relevant social commentary on our misuse of water, our dependence on mass-communication, our commercialization of daily life…Perhaps comparing it to Orwell may be reaching a bit, but it certainly is superior commercial television fare." - Christian Science Monitor

"…Best miniseries in more than a year.  Kenneth Johnson…knows how to make magic…" -Lee Winfrey, Philadelphia Inquirer

'V' makes a mesmerizing nightmare." -Tom Shales, Washington Post

" 'V' -Victorious as sci-fi miniseries…Dazzling…An intelligent, imaginative, engrossing four hour drama. 'V' is a thought provoking, sometimes shocking drama that keeps the viewer engaged." -Kay Gardella, New York Daily News

"Right at the top we know that 'V' isn't just another fling at science fiction - it is nothing less than a retelling of history - the rise of the Nazis done as a cautionary science fiction fable. For television this is probably a first. It is by politics and ideology that you will know 'V'." -John Corry, New York Times

"…Kenneth Johnson and his very good cast and technicians succeed in giving us an imaginative first-class thriller of substance and social significance." -Judith Crist, TV Guide

"…Absolutely stunning…a riveting tale that is utterly convincing and compelling." - Newark Star-Ledger

"It has epic heroes in Marc Singer as a rebelling TV cameraman and Faye Grant as the leader of the Los Angeles underground…It has swell heavies in Andrew Prine and Jane Badler…And it is thoughtful enough to involve viewers on more than one level." -Howard Rosenberg, Los Angeles Times

"…Highly impressive, an enormously engrossing experience. An unusually ambitious and compelling TV venture." - Los Angeles Herald Examiner

" 'V' is a brilliant piece of television…" - St. Louis Post Dispatch

Is the enemy of our enemy our friend... or foe?
By Dave C.
Twenty years ago, they arrived in 50 gigantic motherships offering their peace and universal friendship to Earth. They said they had come because their world was dying and desperately needed our help to manufacture chemicals found on our world in return for sharing their technology, cures for diseases and all the fruits of their knowledge. Skeptical of the Visitors intentions, a collective coalition of scientists became the unwitting scapegoats of a conspiracy against the Visitors and soon a state of martial law was imposed. A small but growing band of underground freedom fighters had organized into the Resistance led in Los Angeles by Dr. Juliette Parrish. News cameraman Mike Donovan had infiltrated the motherships to discover their clandestine truth and with the help of Visitor Fifth Columnist Martin who revealed the Visitors' true horrific intentions that they had come to rape our planet of its most precious resource - water - and to harvest human beings for food. The Resistance struck back and won a small but decisive victory against the Visitors and sent out a distress signal deep into space directed towards their homeworld near Sirius in hopes of it reaching one of the Visitors' adversaries who might answer the beacon and come to help them stave off the invasion.

Twenty years later, that call has been answered. The world under Visitor control is at its most critical point. Fifty percent of the water in the Earth's oceans have been depleted leaving behind a vast barren salt bed along the floor of the Pacific basin. The Golden Gate bridge now suspends atop two large peaks above the once aqueous San Francisco Bay. An entire generation has grown up under Visitor occupation and has bought into the lies and propaganda with unquestioning obedience to The Visitor Way and the apathetic human race have become complacent and submissive through the coercion of the Teammates - those humans that serve the Visitor Youth Corps and the Players - the corrupt collaborators who have betrayed their own kind to satisfy their own personal ambitions. The operation that Martin had said would take nearly a generation to complete was accelerating rapidly now with little opposition after the Resistance had been decimated by Commandant Diana's Great Purge in 1999 and with only a few years left until the Earth would become a barren, desolate planet devoid of all life.

Enter the Zedti - a humanoid race evolved from an insectoidial alien species who respond to the signal at our most desperate hour by sending three advance "emissaries" to make contact with the Resistance in the form of a pair of strangely humanoid females named Kayta and Bryke and a humanoid male named Ayden who are prepared to launch a counter-invasion force waiting in the wings to strike against their old enemies the Visitors whom they had defeated once before and rescue us from their oppression. But are their intentions benevolent, or do they have their own more diabolical plans for us and are we simply trading one dictatorship for an equal or even greater oppressor?

Kenneth Johnson's narrative is engaging and entertaining and manages to deftly interleave socio-political themes relevant to present day issues of counter-terrorism and political apathy as relevant as his brilliant allegory of neo-fascist takeover akin to the Nazi Holocaust that he employed in creating his V - The Original TV Miniseries. However, as a lifelong V fan, the biggest challenges I had to come to terms with while reading Kenny's book, is ignoring the problem of conflicting continuity between his original mini-series and the events of V - The Final Battle and V - The Complete Series of which he had no involvement with, and the fans are asked to simply accept the fact that those events had never even existed. Even more, the fates of several key characters established in Kenny's original story like Elias, who was killed off in the Series, and Robin Maxwell, who was impregnated by the Visitor Youth Leader Brian and gave birth to the half-breed Elizabeth, are overlooked or simply disregarded. In Kenny's mind, all of that never happened and many may welcome the idea that Elizabeth, the Star Child, doesn't save the human race with her hokey magical alien superpowers, the Visitors weren't defeated by the Red Dust, Robert Maxwell wasn't killed trying to help the Resistance commandeer the mothership, and Martin didn't die and come back as his zygote twin brother Philip who just happened to wear an identical human-looking mask. On the other hand we unfortunately never meet the stone-cold mercenary Ham Tyler nor his associate Chris Farber who joined up with the Resistance or other memorable characters indigenous to the series like Kyle Bates.

By disregarding the continuity of V: The Final Battle and V: The Series, there is, for better (*cough* Star Child) and for worse (*cough* Ham Tyler) gaps of unexplained and contradictory continuity between the Original and The Second Generation. Willy's true reptilian nature wasn't revealed to Harmony until V: The Final Battle when the Resistance captured and exposed him in front of a disbelieving Harmy and forced him to confess the truth to her. Complicating things even more, Harmony was killed during the Final Battle. Disregarding those events, the reader must make the supposition that Willy inevitably revealed the truth to her somehow and irregardless of which maintained her indiscriminate feelings toward him and they married and had a half-breed son named Ted and the reader is forced to accept the circumstances of altered continuity twenty years later as-is. With the introduction of the half-breed culture of Dregs at times it felt more like I was reading a page from Kenny's other series Alien Nation, not V.

As much as I would love to see a Second Generation of V revived, I don't think, with all due respect to Kenny, that this story, in its current form, should be used as the basis of a new mini-series because of the problems inherent with ignoring the continuity which old-school V fans might find jarring and confusing. Perhaps this is why initial plans for a new mini-series announced a few years ago by NBC have remained on indefinite hold and Warner Bros. felt like they could still profit from publishing Kenny's book while surreptitiously gauging fan interest in a possible revival or perhaps have their own agenda for a "re-imagining" of V ala "Battlestar Galactica" which I think would be a huge mistake because it would be a betrayal to a generation of loyal fans who, like myself, grew up in the 80's and grew attached to those characters and the actors who portrayed them. Still, I'll take Kenny's version of V the Second Generation over an outright remake or "re-imagining" any day and I'm all for getting behind a revival of V that would reunite original cast members Mark Singer, Faye Grant, Jane Badler, Michael Ironside, Robert Englund, Blair Tefkin, et al, but if and only if it's my generation of V.

Mixed Review
By C. Via
I read the previous reviews before I purchased the book, and I was well prepared. I accepted that the writer chose to deny the existence of V: The Final Battle and the Series which allowed me to approach the book with an open mind. All in all I'm glad I bought the book as it was an enjoyable read. I also agree with many of the gripes of other reviewers.

It's dreadfully obvious that the book was written AFTER a screenplay. I'd even go so far as to say it was hastily put together. I imagine the writer was not able to devote as much time and talent to its writing and was pressured by a deadline. Johnson does provide "sufficient" depth so that anyone reading it who hasn't seen the previous telecasts isn't left in the dark. I was also able to ignore the constant "jumping" from one seen to the next. Even tho most of the time there was no warning and I usually had to reread entire pages to see where it jumped. Occasionally some "jumps" are obvious, as the writer bolds the first sentence.

I'd have to say that the most annoying aspect in the book is it's lack of time. As others have written slightly about it, I feel they didn't describe it enough. There is NO mention of time except for a few instances in which the writer tells you if the sun is shining or stars are twinkling. I've had to reread several pages at a time to get a feel for when the "day" ended, and the "night" began. You'll find yourself imagining one or the other, until the writer tells u at the END of the scene. It's very easy to get lost in the time line, and very frustrating when you have to go back and reread sections at a time.

While the writer provides sufficient depth in some areas, it's horridly lacking in others. Reviewers before me have pointed out that the story ignores various prominent characters from the first series. I've come to the conclusion that once the movie is released, the confusion will evaporate. The book describes a memorial to people lost during the "great purge" as described in the book. Tho the writer only indicates to 2 people on the memorial, I'm assuming that when the movie is shown, we'll see the faces of the missing characters.

On the positive side I'm pleased at how easy the book is to read. The language and vernacular used is as easy to understand as a Harry Potter book. You may however want to censure the book from younger readers, as it does have strong sexual depictions. Speaking of, I was pleasantly surprised at the inclusion of gay characters in the novel. Johnson writes the gay characters as if they are "simply" gay, and pays no special attention to them. He does however, give them equal inclusion in the story line. Johnson plays this off very well and I thank him for not playing into other stereotypes.

Each of the characters are believable and engaging, this is another great aspect that many other authors too often miss. While I agree with others that parts of the story line are predictable, I also assert that every story has a certain predictability. The great thing is that this book is very suspenseful, and a majority of it does not unfold as you may suspect.

I found the ending to the story to be extremely satisfying, however there are some "holes". I also enjoy the that even tho there is a conclusion, it's also a cliff hanger. I have no doubt that if this book and movie is successful, johnson will continue the story line as there is ample room to do so. All in all I'm glad I bought the book and enjoyed reading it. I do have to remove a star as it's not perfect, tho I imagine that subsequent editions will fix the "jumping without notice" problem.

My favorite book
By Mark Payleitner
A favorite from my teens, this book is a great example of great Sci-Fi as a framework for examining social, political and moral issues. The main character has been my hero for 45 years - while his human adversaries could easily be found in today's headlines.

Classic Sci-Fi and the Basis for Alien
By Stephanie Toland
The Voyage of the Space Beagle by A. E. van Vogt is a book that could best be described as Classic Sci-Fi. Science Fiction in general is a genre that is very new to me, and I have never read any van Vogt. So I decided to go on a voyage!

This book was originally 4 short stories that were put together in a "fixup" by van Vogt. The stories are all about the crew of the Space Beagle (a Darwin reference) and its intergalactic expedition. The crew is made up of military personnel and scientists that are on board to study alien life in other galaxies. Eliot Grosvenor, is the books protagonist. He is the lone Nexialist aboard the ship. Nexialism is a relatively new science. It is one that encompasses ALL the other sciences and relates them together. It is more generalized than specific, but it also adds an element of hypnotism and mind control. At first, Grosvenor isn't given much thought. He is left to himself until trouble comes aboard and his skills are called into play.

Each story, or section, in the book describes contact with an alien race. In the first story, the crew members explore what they think is a seemingly deserted planet. The stumble across Coeurl, a cat-like creature that has tentacles and an incredible hunger. He pretends to be just another dumb animal, and the crew members "capture" him and take him aboard the ship to study. But Coeurl is hungry and he has an agenda. He quickly escapes and terrorizes the ship.

They also encounter the Riim, a bird-like creature that has great hypnotic power; the Ixtl, a devil-like alien that is keen on breeding, by implanting his eggs in the stomach of the crew members; and Anabis, who is galaxy-wide and is waiting to take over planets.

While the aliens are the main part of the storyline, what appealed to me even more was the relationships of the crew members. If the creatures outside don't get you, the people inside just might! There is a political undertone that reflects the climate on the ship. The military and the scientists always seem to be at odds with each other and underlies the harmony on the ship. It seems to be a pretty accurate assessment of ventures even today that involve the same types of people. While a lot of the "scientific" stuff is really dated, I was intrigued by the politicking going on inside the walls of the Beagle. This was a short, fun read. I can see a lot of present day science fiction that was influenced by this writer. Overall, I highly enjoyed it!!

Interesting and imaginative but dated!
By Paul Weiss
With all the benefit of hindsight, it's easy to read Van Vogt's "Voyage of the Space Beagle" with the same clarity and futuristic vision that perhaps inspired Gene Roddenberry to spin off Star Trek vesting the Enterprise with the five year mission to go where no man has gone before. In a style that will remind readers of Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles" or Asimov's "I, Robot", this quintessential example of early pulp science-fiction and space opera - at once fun-loving, thought-provoking, intense, frightening and entertaining - is actually a series of four short stories joined together by the common theme of inter-stellar exploration and alien first contact.

Each of the four stories is brim full of the stock in trade and requisite hard sci-fi toys and elements of the typical stories of the day - blasters, stun guns, force fields, teleportation, bizarre aliens, hostile landscapes, communicators, travel at near light speeds, and the like. But assessing it from the hard side of the sci-fi spectrum, "Voyage of the Space Beagle" is certainly not unique, has little beyond short-term entertainment value to recommend it and I think most readers would be unlikely to accord it the status of "classic".

But look more closely at the softer side of the sci-fi field of play! Ah, now there's where "Voyage of the Space Beagle" comes into its own with some compelling and imaginative ideas, insights and questions - Elliot Grosvenor as the expert in the newly founded science of Nexialism which purports to be the nexus or bridge between hitherto unrelated fields of scientific endeavour such as physics, chemistry, metallurgy, geography or sociology for example (a means of looking at the "big" scientific picture from a new meta-level, as it were - do you think we're talking about a 1950s version of Science Officer Spock here?); the social difficulties of a population living in the confined quarters of an exploratory vessel for extended periods; the political, command and management clashes between scientific, technical and military personnel with their varying motives, agendas and decision making styles on such a mission; the completely ineffectual nature of democracy as part of a command structure in the context of such an operation; and the unbridgeable philosophical differences and overwhelming communication difficulties that might be encountered in an alien first contact situation.

Clearly Van Vogt was appreciative of our ultimate smallness in the universe. Like Clifford D Simak, he was also openly critical of man's history of violence and the arrogant impression of his own power and importance:

"You assume far too readily that man is a paragon of justice, forgetting, apparently, that he has a long and savage history. He has killed other animals not only for meat but for pleasure; he has enslaved his neighbors, murdered his opponents, and obtained the most unholy sadistical joy from the agony of others. It is not impossible that we shall, in the course of our travels, meet other intelligent creatures far more worthy than man to rule the universe."

I wonder if Van Vogt appreciated the irony in his own writing. Despite the obvious criticism of the human condition inherent in his character's words, Van Vogt persisted in writing stories in which every alien encounter failed to transcend that hostility and savagery and either began or ended with violent confrontation or battle. For the most part, the inhabitants of the Space Beagle barely even tried. Sigh!

"The Voyage of the Space Beagle" is fun to read, entertaining and imaginative to be sure but not truly visionary and capable of lasting other than as a memento of what good space opera was like in the 50s! Recommended for lovers of classic science fiction.
