exhilarating historical thriller

Late in the tenth century, cousins Conn and Raef Corbansson know they are fortunate to be alive as their side lost the battle of Hjorunga Bay. They escape by a fur trading ship, but end up frozen in place in Novgorod. The city ruler Lord Dobryana aware of the Corbansson exploits offers the "free warriors" a chance to escape the icy winter by joining the crusade to raid the Byzantine Empire northern port city of Chersonese on the Greek Sea.

Getting there takes forever and arriving there proves difficult as Chersonese is not an easy city to take. Worse Conn and Raef soon realize their new comrades in arms are ruthless backstabbers who live for treachery.

The superb fourth Dark Ages Viking saga (see THE SERPENT DREAMER, THE SOUL THIEF and THE WITCHES' KITCHEN) is an exhilarating historical thriller that continues the adventures of the second generation. The locale, for the most part, is different than the three previous novels; as such it adds freshness with the Vikings raiding the Byzantine Empire. The story line is fast-paced and filled with plenty of action, but it is the vivid window into the era that makes Varanger a fabulous insightful tale.

A logical progression from her Viking novels The Serpent Dreamer (Tom Doherty Associates Book), The Soul Thief, and The Witches' Kitchen, this novel follows the adventures of cousins Conn and Raef Corbansson from the ice and snow of winter in Novgorod, to the politics of Volodymyr (Vladimir the Great) in Kiev and down into the northern reaches of the Byzantine Empire. It is an important time in the development of Kievan Rus, the medieval state which existed from approximately 880 to the middle of the 13th century, the Mongol invasion of 1240.

Conn and Raef Corbansson have sailed to Novgorod on a fur trading expedition, where they over-winter and eventually join forces with the local leader Dobrynya on a journey south along the the Dnieper trade route from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. Stopping over in Kiev, and joining forces with Volodymyr (Vladimir the Great), and the raiding party continues south to the Byzantine city of Chersonese (Cherson) on the Black Sea. High adventure, intrigue and betrayal ensue and this fictionalized adventure does add much to think about in how Christianity first came to Kievan Rus, and thus to the Russian Empire.

Vivid, passionate, and brutal - this novel is told from multiple viewpoints, which is frequently annoying, but gives you the full flavor of all the characters involved. The adventure continues in The High City, which is set in Constantinople and further examines the Byzantine Empire.

Vikings Go East

Part of a series begun by Cecelia Holland a while back, this one takes the sons of her earlier hero Corban Loosestrife on a journey east to the country of rivers that would one day become Russia. Apparently working from the tales preserved in the Russian Primary Chronicle and some of the old Icelandic sagas (such as Olaf Tryggvesson's Saga), Ms. Holland provides a finely detailed and convincing picture of what the Rus' (progenitors of the Russians) were like. The record suggests they were an amalgam people, consisting of elements of various Slavic tribal groups onto which Scandinavian adventurers grafted themselves from fairly early times. The Russian Primary Chronicle records the arrival of an apparent viking prince (vikings are called Varangians in the Chronicle -- a term of uncertain derivation) who takes over the rule of a trading town in the north of today's Russia which the Varangians called Holmgard (Island Keep or Fortress) and which came to be known to the Rus' as Novgarod (new keep) although it's not clear which name predated.

The Varangian leader, called Rurik in the Chronicle (and sometimes associated with a Danish Viking of the period, Hroerekr) stayed for only a brief time, though long enough to establish the beginnings of a dynasty and make the first tentative efforts to control all the river towns then growing up along the trade route to Constantinople. Holland's tale takes her two heroes, Raef Corbansson and Conn Corbansson (actually cousins rather than brothers) into the swampy country of Novgarod for a firsthand look at what a Varangian trader's life must have been like. Raef, the one with a touch of magic about him, and his heroically blunt and forceful cousin Conn get stuck in the trading town after washing up on its shores in the crew of a trader who plans to winter there. With no way out the two cousins hunker down to winter there, too. But they soon make enemies of another Varangian and his crew while impressing the local ruler, the historical Dobrynya who was uncle to Vladimir the First of Kiev in the south. Vladimir, the fourth generation of Rurik's kin and the fifth kniaz or prince of Kiev in the Rurikid line, has only recently grabbed the high seat from his predecessor and brother Yaropolk and Uncle Dobrynya is keen on recruiting Varangians to aid the new Kievan ruler to establish himself.

So Raef and Conn sign up (there really's no other way out for them as they've lost all in the west in the previous book) and head upriver through treacherous terrain in some questionable company. After a bit of portage to move their clumsy river boats from one river to another, they head down the Dneiper to Kiev and Vladimir. The first part of the book seems a bit aimless but that is probably true to the kind of time they would have had to put in over a fierce northern Russian winter at Novgarod and Holland does this remarkably well, slowly building up the characterizations and back story sufficiently to carry the rest of the book while painting the frozen swamp and river country around Novgarod in brilliant colors.

Once in Kiev the story picks up its pace because Vladimir (who will one day be hailed in Russian history as Vladimir the Saint) is beset by treachery and the arrival of the small company of "Varangers" led by Conn and Raef povides the still young prince the chance to lock in his control of Kiev and, by dint of that, all of Rus' as far as Novgarod in the north. But Conn and Raef are, typically for vikings, not especially deepminded and are just looking for a chance to win some gold by force of arms. Vladimir, at Dobrynya's urging, has conceived a plan to extort a political alliance from the Greeks in Constantinople if he can get their attention -- which is where Raef and Conn come in. Complications ensue when Conn finds himself enthralled by a Khazar princess in Vladimir's harem (for the record, Holland calls him Volodymir and who is to say her spelling isn't the right one?) and Raef finds himself keeping house with a Hunnish woman he has rescued from Conn's clumsy efforts at rape. The Rus' around Volodymir are a mixed group (second and third generation Varangians, mixed bloods and Slavic tribesmen -- just as the historic records suggest) and they don't all take to the small gang of northerners following the two cousins.

Making use of Volodymir's father's abandoned dragon ships, the northerners lead Volodymir, Uncle Dobrynya and their henchman, the Slavic captain, Pavo, on an expedition against the Greek trading outpost town of Chersonese on the northern coast of the Black Sea. With only four dragon ships they seem rather woefully undermanned for taking even this outpost town, given Holland's description, but they pull it off convincingly, leading to Volodymir's historic conversion to Christianity in exchange for recognition and alliance with the Greeks. The outcome, however, doesn't sit well with our heroes who have to decide how to deal with the kniaz' machinations, leading to the tale's denouement.

On balance, though slowgoing at first, the book rewards with its vivid picture of Varangian times in the east and the fast paced battle for Chersonese. On the negative side, I frequently found myself confused by the cousins as Raef and Conn tended to meld in the mind. Though endowed with distinctly different personalities (Raef's the sensitive, thinking one while Conn's the guy with the chip on his shoulder, albeit not a bad sort when you get to know him), and though they are different in appearance (Raef is thin and light haired while Conn is more muscular and dark), it's hard to tell them apart in the midst of the action. And if the fight for the Greek city was nicely done, the size and scope of the Rus' force just seemed too insignificant to pull it off. And, alas, the ending seemed rushed with too much forced into it. While Holland admirably allows some of her most interesting characters to bite the dust (as in real life), the final resolution of the story disappoints, perhaps because of that choice.

After reading the first in the series I had decided not to read anymore but was drawn to Varanger because it promised to deliver a tale touching on the eastern vikings who reached their zenith in the time of Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev. On that score Holland delivers a solid tale, effectively researched. But in terms of characters and plotline, I was left a little cold. My favorite Holland viking tale is still Two Ravens which has been out of print, apparently, for some years now.

Great Jumping on Point!

If you are new to the wild world of the Master's of Sinanju this collection is the perfect starting point. From here new readers can easily hop into the new series (starting with Guardian Angel). Old fans too will enjoy having 3 of the classic, series defining novels in one volume. 3 of the best stories from this long running, action / adventure / fantasy / laugh out loud / two fisted series. GREAT STUFF!

Destroyer Classics

Here are three novels in the Destroyer series. They were picked (I guess by Warren Murphy) as being representative of the typical (or among the best) books in the series. Personally, I've always liked these books because I'm a martial arts fan. The quality of the plots is, in my opinion, usually seconadary to the funny and highly amusing interplay that goes on between Remo and Chuin.

Perfect Relaxation

I was an avid fan of the 1st Destroyer Series, and decided for a bit of relaxation, I will see if there are new books. I was not only pleasantly surprised, but was amazed by the speed with which the book reached me, and as usual I was glued to it from the first page to the last page. This is one series of books to which a movie cannot do justice.

As in the Icewind Dale books, the setting is a remote wintry landscape, with isolated islands standing in for barbarian villages. The scattered cast takes much too long to converge, and druidic arch-villain Ancient Badden never emerges as an effective antagonist. The result is a Frankenstein's monster–like construct of brisk prose and lively combat scenes: imposing at first glance, but awkwardly assembled and doomed to disappoint. (Mar.)

Good read.

I ordered this book as it is another in the series. It is an interesting read and not something I would normally buy but I was intrigued by the first book and wanted to see what happens next. All in all I like it.

A solid start to a new trilogy

The Ancient by R.A. Salvatore is the first novel in a new Corona trilogy titled Saga of the First King. This novel picks up shortly after the events of The Highwayman: A Novel of Corona. Before reading this novel, if you have not yet read the Highwayman, I strongly suggest you do so. There are a number of things that are alluded to, or talked about, that if you have not read the Highwayman won't make much sense at all. So, to avoid confusion, I would strongly encourage readers to read that one first. It is also important to note that this trilogy is a prelude of sorts to his highly acclaimed Demon Wars saga. As with most preludes, it is not necessary to have already read the Demon Wars saga - but it would certainly add much to the reading experience.

The plot of this book is actually several plots woven together to create an overall plotline. The overall plot is that of Bransen trying to find his the father he has never known. However, there are more immediate plot line that are put into play. There is a subplot of a disenchanted monk who is seeking to find himself either in the tenets of the church or away from the church's teachings. There is also a subplot of a barbarian shaman who is dealing with her faith and beliefs in the face of the new faith that she is being exposed to due to the arrival of the monks. The third subplot involves Bransen being tricked into participating in something that he otherwise would not have taken part in. All three of these subplots are loosely tied together by the threat of an ancient evil.

A couple of the characters found in this book are carryover characters from the Highwayman. Most notably Bransen. However, aside for a few select characters, the cast of this book is new. A word of caution to fans of Mr. Salvatore's Drizzt novels. Do not become too attached to any character in Salvatore's Corona novels, at times when you least expect it one may happen to die. Two of the more interesting new characters are Cormack and Milkeila. Both are from separate religions, but are dealing with the same feelings about their religions. Each of these characters experiences significant character development throughout that novel, some of which is introspective which I appreciate as we don't really see that much in fantasy novels. Bransen, although he is a main part of the story, doesn't really seem to experience much development at all. By and large, the way he starts the novel is pretty much how he ends the novel. I really enjoyed his character in The Highwayman, yet I never felt like I really connected with his character in this novel. There were also a couple of powries who I also had a hard time connecting with. From past novels we know that powries are heartless, killers and tough as nails. Yet, in this novel, while we certainly learned more about them - it almost seemed as though Mr. Salvatore tried to force the powries into being a bit of comedic relief which is totally against everything we, as readers, know about them. The villain, Ancient Badden, is your typical fantasy novel villain. There is really nothing that sets him apart from other villains. He's not a `badly' written villain by any means, it's just there is nothing `special' about him either.

I do have a couple of criticisms about this novel.

1 - Fans of Mr. Salvatore's Drizzt novels will surely recognize the use of journal entries in this novel at the start of each section. When I say the first entry I inwardly groaned. When I saw the second one I was disappointed that Salvatore would use that means of conveyance so popular in the Drizzt books, in this novel. It's the adage of going to the well one too many times takes away the uniqueness. I often like the Drizzt entries, but they seem very out of place in this novel.

2 - The way the chapters are set up is very, for lack of a better word, unconventional. There are several small sections in each chapter covering a different point of view. A couple of times it even alternates between a couple POV in a given chapter. This approach makes the chapters, at times, feel choppy and disjointed. That style, at least to me, takes away from any solid flow the previous section may have established.

Some things that I really liked about this novel.

1 - I like the overall story arc of Bransen looking for his father. It was hinted at towards the end of the Highwayman and I think it will be a rather interesting tale to read about his search and how he handles having to use the gemstones to be `normal'.

2 - I really enjoy how Salvatore writes secondary characters. They are almost always as richly detailed as the primary characters. It is nice to see that attention to detail given to even minor characters.

3 - I just really enjoy reading books set in the world of Corona. It's a richly detailed world that has some very unique elements to it. As well as the general rule I mentioned before about Corona novels. No character is safe from impending death. It's a refreshing thing to say in fantasy novels now-a-days.

Overall, I really wanted to love this book. Yet, once I finished I did not feel it was Salvatore's best work. It's certainly a solid novel, and one many fans will most certainly enjoy. But, I never felt the `wow' factor I felt with the Highwayman, or the Demon War novels. If I had the ability to rate this novel a 3.5 out of 5 I would do that, but being that I don't I will give it a 4 out of 5. It's certainly a book I would recommend to fantasy fans, with the caveat that they should really read the Highwayman first. I am looking forward to see what other stories Salvatore will write in Corona.

Formulaic but Fun!

Publisher's weekly blasted this book condemning it with the suggestion that Salvatore had "borrowed" characters, situations and settings from his previous novels. While this is likely true Salvatore's oft repeated theme surrounding the questioning of Mores, faith and "common knowledge" is such an important theme that it SHOULD be repeated. Even more importantly, the formula that Salvatore uses is just plain entertaining.

This is the second novel featuring Salvatore's Highwayman. The Highwayman is a cross between Jet Li, Robin Hood and Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man. In the first novel we are introduced to Bransen the son of an Abellican monk (a Catholic priest with magic) and a Jhesta Tu Mystic (Shaolin Nun with magic). Branson's mother, newly and unknowingly pregnant saves a dying woman using her mystical Chi based abilities. Unfortunately the healing requires that the Jest Mystic take on the poisons that infect the woman's body. These aquired poisons cause massive birth defects that become apparent after Branson's birth. With his mother dead and his father missing (dead as well), the Stork (as Branson is called) is raised in a harsh monastery. However, Branson trains himself in the ways of the jhesta Tu mystics and combines it with the powerful gemstones of the Abellicans to not only make himself whole, but to make of himself an unstoppable warrior.

In "the Ancient" we find Branson travelling with his wife and his mother in law as they attempt to get to the mountains of Jhest so that Branson can be completely healed of his Stork body (he still needs the gemstones in order to become the Highwayman). Through a series of events, adventures and individuals, the Highwayman is conscripted into an army that is in the midst of a Holy war; his skills and abilities are multiplied by joining them with an unlikely, but skilled group of freedom fighters.

I found "The Ancient" to by highly entertaining, the action sequences are tight with plenty of blood and gore; and while the characters are not new ones that stretch Salvatore's literary muscles, they are likeable, three dimensional and entertaining.

If you are a Bob Salvatore fan you won't be surprised by this novel, but you will be entertained.

Those with a taste for massive high fantasy epics will welcome Erikson's fifth entry in his Malazan Book of the Fallen saga (after 2006's House of Chains), though it largely deals with the calm between storms. In the north, the Warlock King has united the tribes of Tiste Edur into a formidable realm, though his four feisty sons may yet cause problems. In the south, the still more formidable kingdom of Lether is using both bribery and military threats to intimidate its neighbors and rebuild its ancient empire. Tiste Edur will have none of this, however, for reasons going back to bloody feuds of centuries past. The author has a rare talent for building character by internal dialogue without slowing the pace. The large cast may daunt new readers, but maps and a glossary help fill the gaps. The ending suggests there'll be a lot more action in the sixth book (out of a projected 10).

It’s war between Lether and the Tiste Edur. A prequel of sorts to House of Chains.

MIDNIGHT TIDES centers on a conflict between the Letherii and the Titse Edur. Arrogantly, the Letherii have goaded the Edur into war, assuming that their wealth, magic, and size will spell inevitable victory for the Letherii. Unfortunately for them, the Edur are talented warriors with unexpected ferocity. In addition, this group of Edur has been granted unholy powers by the Crippled God, who has manipulated himself into position to control the Edur through their young emperor, Rhulad.

The book is full of excellent characters, and mostly revolves around two sets of three brothers, one Edur and one Letherii. The Beddict brothers (Hull, Brys, and the hilarious Tehol) couldn’t be more different from one another, though they all play important roles in Letherii society. The Sengar brothers come form a powerful family within the Tiste Edur, and include Fear, Trull, and the aforementioned Rhulad. Trull is perhaps my favorite character from the entire series, being a extremely well-done character whom is also featured in House of Chains. He represents the skeptic and the thinker who is able to see beyond common group-think and challenge the assumptions of his people.

MIDNIGHT TIDES compares favorably with the other books in the series. It includes all of the same drama, violence, and magnificent imagery that all of the books lean on. Perhaps it is a little more focused and tame than the other books tend to be, helping the reader feel a bit more grounded in this vast world of Steven Erikson. Highly recommended. Looking forward to continuing the series with The Bonehunters

Perhaps the best in the series

Midnight Tides is the fifth book of Steven Erikson's 10-volume series The Malazan Book of the Fallen. Unlike other multi-volume big-book fantasy writers, Erikson's production has been consistent: about a volume per year and he has completed 7, of which five are available through his US publisher, Tor.

This book is somewhat different in tone and feel from the first four. This is partly because it introduces the third main story thread of the series after the Genabackis and Seven Cities plotlines from previous books. There are other major differences.

First, the action occurs before the events of volumes 1-4. Second, the characters, other than one from book four, House of Chains, are entirely new. Third, the story focuses on a distinct conflict between two peoples -- the Tiste Edur of the northlands and the human empire Letheras that seeks to expand and conquer. Fourth, the two sides are shown through two major families, the four Sengar brothers (Fear the elder, Trull the dutiful, Binadas the mysterious, Rhulad the covetous) of the Edur, and the three human Beddict brothers (Hull, who has been broken by his past; Tehol, who is an eccentric genius; and Brys the King's champion). Erikson displays family relations, political alignments within the two societies, bonds between brothers and the separate societies through these two lenses. This is one of the most emotionally charged books of the series.

Unlike Gardens of the Moon, which basically started after a cataclysmic event and revealed details of the situation later, Midnight Tides has a set beginning -- the Warlock King who has united the Edur tribes seeks a powerful talisman to maintain control, while the Letheras empire threatens to conquer the whole continent. Within this background are the numerous story threads in each Erikson book: political intrigue, gods and monsters interacting with "normal" people and references to the overall arc of the story which Erikson started to divulge in book 3. And of course, there's plenty of action: from small parties fighting in the arctic wilderness to major military battles.

This book is also flat-out funny -- the interaction between Tehol and his amazingly resourceful manservant Bugg is among the best comic relief in any major fantasy series and it enlivens book 7, Reaper's Gale (available in the UK and Canada) too.

The detractions are standard for the genre -- the books are long and completion is years away. All of the volumes except the first are more than 600 pages in trade paperback and they're getting longer -- book 7 is more than 900! But the quality of Erikson's work hasn't diminished, unlike so many other major "doorstopper" fantasy writers. And his publishing pace is good: it takes him 8 months to write each volume and he's hitting a one-per-year rate for new books (Tor is publishing US versions of previous UK editions every 8-9 months). So making the commitment is more rewarding than it is for some other works.

Overall, the series, and especially this volume, is highly recommended

Compelling and just right.

This third book in the Edda of Burdens trilogy is excellent. This book features the blend of postapocalyptic fantasy and Norse mythology, and the complex interrelationships, which I've come to expect from this series. "The Sea Thy Mistress" complicates the two previous books in the trilogy, and it also completes them, beautifully. There's no shortage of suffering in this one -- Bear doesn't pull punches! -- but there's just enough redemption to make the angst worthwhile, and the ending felt exactly right to me. Deeply satisfying. If you enjoy complicated relationships, revisited mythologies, and excellent storytelling, don't miss this one.

super fantasy

To save the world, Muire the Angel gave herself up by diving into the sea to become the Bearer of Burdens (see All the Windwracked Stars). However, not everyone she left behind rejoice with her ascension sacrifice. In Eiledon Cathoair the immortal warrior angel mourns his loss, which he sees everyday in their offspring Cathmar, who he raises as a single dad knowing the lad will never meet his mother.

Even more raging is Heythe the Goddess, who had set in motion the end of the world before Muire interceded, but riding into the future she is shocked to find a renewed world rather than a dead orb. Knowing what Muire sacrifice has cost her, Heythe takes out her anger and frustration on tormented Cathoair who wallows in pity. She encourages the relatively new immortal to walk a personal path of destruction to force Muire to break her Bearer of Burdens oath and cause the final demise of Valdyrgard. On the other hand her other toy is the son but he displays maturity as he becomes an adult. Meanwhile Mingan the wolf observes the return of the evil enemy and plans to prevent Heythe's second chance at ending the world.

This fantasy is fascinatingly more a character study as readers see deep into the souls of father and son and to a lesser degree other cast members. Elizabeth Bear enables her fans to feel Cathoair's torment; yet there is plenty of action as Heythe tries to force Muire to return to save her beloved mate and their son. Although Heythe is not quite as powerfully wicked as she was in All the Windwracked Stars, The Sea Thy Mistress is a super thriller as the audience wonders how the heroine of the first thriller will react to the latest threat.

Brings Norse mythology to life

The Sea Thy Mistress is the third book of the The Edda of Burdens, which I believe, is a trilogy. It picks up after the ending of the first book, All the Windwracked Stars. (The events in book 2, By the Mountain Bound, are the actual beginning of the story.)

Fifty years after Muire has ascended to become the Bearer of Burdens -- a goddess that is one with the Wyrm that dwells in the ocean -- she gives birth to a son. The infant is found on the beach by the cyborg Aethelred, a priest of Muire who was once a bartender. At the time the child's father, Cahey -- Muire's former lover turned Einherjar -- is off wandering the previously apocalyptic world, performing his task of protecting and helping the new human settlements. So are the moreau, human-animal hybrids, which were released from bondage by Muire. Meanwhile, the only remaining original Einherjar, Mingan and the two-headed war-steed named Kasimir, prepare for the return of their ancient enemy, who has come back across the rainbow bridge. Heythe's plans to end the world were halted in All the Windwracked Stars, so she's come back to finish what she started. The child is her key to defeating Muire and the, now, too few Einherjar.

Ms. Bear's style, at least in this series, verges on the melodramatic. I'd go so far as to say it pushes the boundary between epic and romantic fantasy. There are a lot of broken hearts and a lot of pining over lost loves, which is something I'd usually steer well clear of. In fact, if someone had mentioned these elements to me, I'd never have picked up The Edda of Burdens. Am I ever glad no one did, because this is a very beautifully written book. Elizabeth Bear's prose and language almost begs to be read aloud. It reads so effortlessly that it's almost poetic.

The characters are very flawed, but are only more endearing for it. Those flaws are exemplified by the fact that they are now the Einherjar, which are warrior angels. I mentioned in my review of All the Windwracked Stars how interesting the concept of "angels of a dead god" is. In The Sea Thy Mistress this idea has changed somewhat. Now it's about reincarnated angels of a new god that guard over a reborn world and how they must deal with a devious enemy from a primeval past -- an enemy that's powerful enough to have destroyed worlds and defeated them all, rather easily, the first time around.

Still, those things are not what completely won me over. The Edda of Burdens is based on Norse mythology, but it's more like it is Norse mythology, or as if this is how those legends should be. It's like Bear has uncovered a lost Viking artifact and deciphered runes that contained previously unknown details about the beings that fight the battle of Raknarok and what comes after. She brings the mythos to life and projects it into an alternate future.

Characterizations are intriguing, to say the least, as is Jack's wrestling with ethics and morality, but essentially the opener of the Dragonback series is a romp of a space thriller, provided you don't take it too seriously. Very YA in tone and plot, it would have fitted nicely into the short-lived, late-1980s YA sf line written by such adult sf luminaries as Silverberg, Zelazny, and Gerrold. Would have given it a 5 stars, but...

STORY: Fourteen-year-old orphan Jack Morgan,is on the run and finds himself hiding out on an unoccupied planet, his only companion an artificial intelligence programmed with the personality of his con man uncle Virge. Jack unexpectedly meets Draycos, a dragon-like K'da, sole survivor of an advance team of K'da and due to circumstance the two must form a symbiotic relationship in order to survive and find out how to clear Jack's name and get the police off his back.
MY FEEDBACK:
1) SETTING - The title of the book brought expectations of a fantasy novel to mind so I was nicely surprised to see it was a sci-fi story. We get little peeks into an alien planet (it doesn't feel too alien though), space station/community, and a luxury space yacht (made me think of Fifth Element). The world is given very little detail but what is given is functional and entertaining. I look forward to the rest of the series fleshing the universe out a lot more.
2) CHARACTERS - I like our three protagonists a lot. Each one has thier separate voice and brings along individual strengths to the story. What is the appeal of the book is the growing friendship between Jack and Draycos. Nicely done.
My only complaint is that Draycos seems overly powerful to the point that it becomes almost too much to believe...even for an alien race.
3) PLOT - Here is where I knock things down from a 5 star to a 4 star. First of all, the story read fast and easy and before you know it you are done with all 250 pages. That is good. What is bad is that it feels like one big prologue (which it kind of is) to a much larger story, thus it leaves very little (almost nothing) resolved. How much longer do we have to wait till the next book comes out to hopefully resolve some of the story??? I hope not too long.
Also, Jack at one point goes on a "mission" on a space yacht...he and Draycos seem to do the "impossible" way too easy.
I did like the descent plot twists and turns. It was enough to keep me turning the pages.
OVERALL: This is my first Timothy Zahn book. It was a fun fast read, just perfect for summer when it is too hot to go outside. The story makes you want more but who knows how long you'll have to wait. Thus, if you think you'll forget everything before the next book comes out, then wait until the next book comes out and read them both back-to-back.

Short, but oh so sweet

This was originally pitched as a young adult series to the publisher, who apparently decided to market it as an adult series anyway. The result - a squinky little undersized 250-page hardcover, right on the heels of two 400+ page Zahn tomes in a row. I admit I was a little reluctant to shell out the cash for it, but I did anyway, because it's Zahn, and he's never let me down before.
I am SO glad I did. The effect of the original concept being a young-adult series seems to be that he takes all of his usual strengths and just condenses them, packing the same amount of awesomeness into a tighter space. His writing style doesn't seem to have been affected at all - I never felt like what I was reading was "dumbed down" or anything like that. All of the Zahn hallmarks are here - the complex and surprising plot, the human and sympathetic characters, and the taut and concise action scenes - just in a smaller space. As opposed to a cast of 20 characters, there is a cast of 2, but they're both GREAT.
Also, needless to say, the usual Zahn creativity with aliens and worlds remains - one of the main characters is a dragon thing that lives in 4 dimensions, and can either show as a three dimensional creature or two dimensional in our world. He lives wrapped around the other main character like a tattoo, and can jump off and fight at will. It's an interesting concept, and makes for an interesting character.
Overall, if you've ever read anything by Zahn and liked it, you won't want to miss this, despite it being overpriced and short. If you're new to Zahn, I'd reccomend a longer one like Icarus Hunt to get you hooked, but for anyone that's liked his earlier work, this will please you more than you expect.

Fast paced space opera at its very best - and who doesn't love a good orphan boy thief and his noble dragon warrior companion?

Timothy Zahn's Dragon And Thief, the first novel in what became a six-book series, is space opera at its very best. The pair of main characters are actually an old tradition in fantasy novels - a streetwise orphan boy thief and a chivalrous warrior who are thrown together by circumstances - but this time they're in a science fictional setting.

Jack Morgan is fourteen, alone and surviving by his wits - and the help of Uncle Virge, an AI left in his ship's computer by his now-deceased Uncle Virgil, a notorious interstellar con-man. and the warrior happens to be a dragon-like alien. Draykos is a K'da warrior/poet, the K'da being an alien race of dragon-like creatures who have the ability to become two-dimensional. Zahn adds an additional twist with the K'da being symbiotes who require a humanoid host in order to survive, spending part of their time as living tattoos on the host's skin.

Although Dragon And Thief might well be viewed as a juvenile novel, it is in fact a highly enjoyable read for readers of any age. Zahn starts things off at a fast pace and keeps them moving, with twists and turns thrown in to keep things from being predictable. Jack is on the run, framed for a crime he didn't commit, and is hiding out on a remote and uninhabited planet while he tries to think things through. Draycos ends up stranded on the same planet when he and his companions - fellow K'da and their Shontine hosts, all fleeing from a race called the Valahgua who are bent on their extermination - are ambushed in space above the planet. After his ship crash lands, Draycos finds he is the only survivor. And without a Shontine host to return to, his life expectancy has become a matter of hours. When they meet up, each quickly realizes they will need the other to suvive.

Zahn's characterizations are great, showing just how different his two protagonists are and the challenges they face in learning to trust each other. The chapters alternate between Jack's and Draykos' points of view and so you get to see how each views the other - the orphan teen who has been taught to look out only for himself, that he can't rely on or trust anyone, and the warrior/poet who lives by a code and whose own life is secondary to the need to save the remaining K'da and Shontine from annihilation by the Valahgua:

"Thoughts of Uncle Virgil flickered through Draycos's mind. Uncle Virgil, and his ghostly echo inside the Essenay's computer. That human had taught Jack to think only about himself, to do that which only benefited him. Was the boy even capable of thinking about higher things? Would he understand the idea of sacrificing something you valued, or something you cared about, for something even more valuable?
--Even if he did, would he think the K'da and Shontine were worth the sacrifice of his life?
-- Probably not. Given time, Draykos knew he could teach the boy about such things as honor and integrity and justice. Jack had the potential to stand with the very finest of the K'da and Shontine.
-- But he wasn't there yet. Would he be able to find the strength to calmly die so that the K'da and Shontine might live? Draykos didn't think so.
-- But if he did his job right, neither of them would have to find out."

I'm tempted to give this book 5 stars for sheer enjoyability, but in the end I settled on four. I can't say it's a must-read, but I can say that if you like space opera, and in particular if you like reading stories about streetwise orphan thieves who end up as companions to chivalrous warrior-types, then you will definitely enjoy this book. For myself, I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Dragon And Soldier. Highly recommended.

About the Author

For well over a half century, Andre Norton has been one of the most popular science fiction and fantasy authors in the world. Since her first SF novels were published in the 1940s, her adventure SF has enthralled readers young and old. With series such as Time Traders, Solar Queen, Forerunner, Beast Master, Crosstime, and Janus, as well as many stand-alone novels, her tales of action and adventure throughout the galaxy have drawn countless readers to science fiction.

Her fantasy, including the best-selling Witch World series, her "Magic" series, and many other unrelated novels, has been popular with readers for decades. Lauded as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America, she is the recipient of a Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention. Not only have her books been enormously popular; she also has inspired several generations of SF and fantasy writers, especially many talented women writers who have followed in her footsteps. In the past two decades she has worked with other writers on a number of novels. Most notable among these are collaborations with Mercedes Lackey, the Halfblood Chronicles, as well as collaborations with A.C. Crispin (in the Witch World series) and Sherwood Smith (in the Time Traders and Solar Queen series). An Ohio native, Ms. Norton lived for a number of years in Winter Park, Florida, and now makes her home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where she continues to write, and presides over High Hallack, a writers' resource and retreat.

Your entry into one of Fantasy's greatest worlds

"The Gates to Witch World" combines the first three published Witch World novels of Andre Norton. The first two concern the adventures of Simon Tregarth, and the third, "Year of the Unicorn" is a stand-alone fantasy set in the Dales of High Hallack.

As the first fantasy, "Witch World" (1963) begins, Simon Tregarth, who worked his way up to Lieutenant-Colonel on the battlefields of World War II, is a hunted man, unjustly cashiered from the U.S. Army for dealing in the post-war blackmarket. Since Simon had been labeled as a crook, he figured he might as well play the game.

After seven years in the underworld, surrounded by his enemies and a gunshot away from death, Simon treats himself to a decent last meal (Andre Norton heroes and heroines NEVER whine. They assess the odds, then keep on slogging). Enter the mysterious Doctor Petronius who persuades Simon that he has nothing to lose by vanishing from his enemies' gunsights through the Siege Perilous, a Cornish megalith that is rumored to be a gate to other worlds. Simon leaves the restaurant with Petronius, almost positive that he is walking into a trap. Instead of the bullet he is expecting, our hero is transported to the foggy moors of a new world.

The action doesn't let up. The first thing Simon does is rescue a witch from a nasty bunch of snake-headed dogs and hunters (we don't learn the witch's name until the very end of the book). The next thing he knows, he's embroiled in a war where the good guys appear to be losing.

Simon allies himself with "a tall, proud-walking race with...the carriage of rulers and an odd weight of years upon them." His new home, medieval Estcarp is a matriarchate, ruled by witches, whose powers depend on their continuing virginity.

Nevertheless, Simon falls in love with the witch he rescued.

The enemies that he and Estcarp must confront have invaded Witch World via a gate similar to the Siege Perilous. The alien Kolder are technically advanced, with submarines and mind-control devices that they use to command their zombie soldiers.

Estcarp's only allies are the Sulcarmen, seafaring warriors and traders who lose their main port of Gorm to the Kolder. Simon, his friend Koris of Gorm, the witch he rescued from the Hounds of Alizon, and a youthful soldier called 'Briant' tread the mysterious byways of Estcarp and its warring neighbors, in an attempt to track down and destroy the technically superior aliens.

"Web of the Witch World" (WWW - 1964) is the sequel to "Witch World" (WW- 1963) and continues the story of Simon Tregarth and the witch, Jaelithe. Thematically, both WW and WWW will seem very familiar to fans of the late, great Andre Norton: a conflict between technically advanced, but soulless aliens, and courageous, sword-wielding men and women, who are attempting to make one last stand against the Powers of Evil.

Simon Tregarth and his witch-wife, Jaelithe once again find themselves in combat with the alien Kolder, who invaded Witch World through a gateway from their own dying planet. The Kolder were temporarily stymied in WW, but Simon and his fellow warriors know that they must somehow close the gate between worlds before there will truly be an end to the alien evil.

Witch-ruled Estcarp must do battle with her own neighbors as well as the aliens. Yvian of Karsten declares open war against the witches, and they in turn believe that he has somehow been tainted by the Kolder. The Hounds of Alizon, seething with hatred against all things magical must also be tamed.

The third fantasy, "Year of the Unicorn" (1965) is a grand adventure, a love story, a coming-of-age novel set like a jewel amidst the fantastical Dark and Light of Norton's Witch World. `Unicorn' veers away from the `mainstream' Witch World adventures of the Tregarth family, but it is perfect in its own setting: the Wastes and Dales of High Hallack.

Each setting, each character is illuminated with clear description and color, like scenes from a medieval Book of Hours. Even though I first read this book in 1965, I can still close my eyes and see Gillan and the ancient Dame Alousan gathering herbs in the high-walled garden of Norstead Abbey. I can see the twelve and one high-born maids riding forth from the Abbey - the twelve and one maids who were promised as brides to the Were-riders of the Waste.

The heroine, Gillan realizes that she is not meant for the quiet life of her vowed companions. She possesses a magic that is forbidden to the goodly Dames, and a restless curiosity that is stifled behind the stone walls of the Abbey. And so she rides forth, disguised as the bride who had threatened to kill herself rather than marry a Were-rider. In order to survive, Gillan must rely on her unschooled magic to separate illusion from reality, and true love from the snarling masks of the Were Pack.

Lifetime Grand Master of Fantasy, Andre Norton built well. There are 35 Witch World (WW) fantasies, and the count is probably still rising even though this author passed away on March 17, 2005. Many of the later WW novels were collaborations, and it wouldn't surprise me if her co-authors attempt to live on in the world that the Grand Master created. I wish them well, but so far they have not managed to penetrate the brilliantly weird landscapes of Andre Norton's imagination.

Andre Norton Does Indeed Write "The Good Stuff"

The first Witch World novel was published in 1963 so this book almost marks the 40th anniversary.
In her Introduction, C. J. Cherryh refers to Norton's Witch World novels as "the good stuff". She is right. I am so pleased to have this omnibus collection of the three seminal Witch World novels although it can never replace my tattered old Ace paperbacks with the Jack Gaughin covers. It even felt a little odd to be reading clear text (minus some of the typos that Ace was notorious for) on a white page instead of the yellowing pages of the acidic paper of these old books.
However, I found myself just as caught up in the story of Simon Tregarth, the tarnished war hero who stepped through a gate ahead of an assassin into the world of Jaelithe, the Witch of Escarp, as I have ever been. The story of these two who fight, along with Koris of Gorm and Loyse of Verlaine, to try to preserve the ancient world of Escarp from the advance of the Kolder, is played out against a vivid background of cultures such as the Falconers, who value their hawks far more than their women; the Sulcar, valient seagoers; and last but not least the matriachal Witches who rule the land of Escarp through the power of the jewels and their minds.
The third book is Year of the Unicorn. It is set in High Hallack, a land of dales and small holdings. High Hallack has been torn by war with Alizon from overseas. This story is set after the war has been won when the Dalesmen are faced with meeting a bargain they made during their most desperate hours with a people they feared, the Were riders.
The premise is the barter of 13 brides for the services of the Were Riders against the hounds of Alizon. The heoine is Gillian, who also came from overseas on an Alizon ship as a child, but not of Alizon. The hero is Herrel who does not fit into the mould of his kinsmen and thus has suffered all his life as an outsider in a very close knit group.
Published in the 60's these books have not aged a bit and are as fresh as the first time I picked them up.

A Great Read

If you like fantasy and are not acquainted with the works of Andre Norton, then this is an excellent starting point. Believable, heroic characters and a well thought-out "Witch World" combine to make for an enjoyable read. Simon Tregarth is transported through a mysterious gate into a world populated by people and other things not people. A struggle goes on between good and evil, and it's not clear who is winning. (But, we know who wins in the end - "good", of course.) The style of writing - more of a story that unfolds as it is read - is one strength that characterizes her writings. That, and the fascinating settings, imaginative perils faced, and strong likable characters make this a "must read". This is a refreshing hard-to-put-down story. It does not suffer from the typical overinflated, overwordy, overcomplicated, and overcharacterized (and lifeless) features of the usual fantasy megathon offered today.
