This is the first of a two-volume chronicle telling the modern-day story of the 7th Infantry, a regiment which has seen more active service than any other over its 200-year history. Historian McManus (Alamo in the Ardennes) begins with the Korean War. The 7th came ashore in late 1950, just in time to meet the onslaught of Chinese forces. After bitter fighting, it returned to the front in South Korea to participate in bloody offensives both large and small. Only one battalion of the 7th fought in Vietnam, and the author recounts its four years of conflict before moving on to the 1990s, when reforms had converted the army into an all-volunteer force of professionals, superbly equipped and ready to fight in Iraq. There, the 7th inflicted great damage on the foe but rarely suffered a casualty. McManus's overview of recent wars from the 7th's point of view draws on exhaustive research and interviews with veterans. The result is a book devoted largely to battlefield human interest stories, miniautobiographies of soldiers and exciting but disconnected accounts of individual unit actions that may engage military buffs more than the general reader. He also produces some of the best infantry-combat narratives around, whether they arise from marching out from Chosin (and having the marines hog all the credit), repelling a last-ditch NVA offensive against Saigon, fighting Gulf War battles after the cease-fire, or running out of supplies and into car bombs during the march on Baghdad. An engaging historical walk with the infantry...

John McManus has a great gift for writing engrossing historical narratives. Don't let the academic title and cover deceive you. His latest book is not some dry academic chronicle of the 7th Infantry Regiment ("the Cottonbalers") from the Korean War to the modern era. It is up close and personal journey with the American infantryman as he struggles to carry out his mission through all kinds of adversity in all kinds of wars.

McManus takes you from the rugged mountains of Korea where seemingly endless waves of Chinese threaten to dislodge you from your frozen hillside foxhole, to the humid, mosquito infested rice paddies of Vietnam where a ghostly enemy strikes suddenly and then disappears. The saga ends with modern day Cottonbalers dispersing from Bradleys to battle insurgents in the heart of Baghdad. McManus not only tells a good series of stories, he paints graphic pictures complete with sights, smells, and sounds.

Throughout the book's subject span of nearly sixty years, the names, the weapons and the geographic settings change, but the unique burdens of the infantryman remain unchanged. McManus reminds the reader that wars are won by an army's ability to capture and hold ground. This is the dirty, thankless job of an infantryman whether he wears a steel pot and carries a carbine, or relies on Kevlar, night-vision, and an M16.

I am looking forward to reading the upcoming "prequel" to this unique unit history. McManus will detail the 7th Infantry Regiment from the War of 1812 to WWII. I expect another round of engaging storytelling where a musket, Springfield, and M1 Garand will be placed alternately into my figurative hands. I also suspect the core theme will remain: the queen of battle is, and always has been, the infantry.

A well written and insightful history of courage and valor

John C. McManus has again written an excellent military history this time with a focus on the a single regiment. As usual, McManus has combined military reports of combat with eyewitness accounts of the soldiers who were there in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. While each of these wars occurred for different reasons, in different countries, and with different enemys, the American soldiers of the 7th Regiment served with honor and courage.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who interested in U.S. military history. Dr. McManus is superb historian with the ability to write well and keep the reader's attention. I am looking forward reading the next volume in the story of the 7th Regiment.

I was interviewed with Bravo Co. 3/7 INF. ...

I was interviewed with Bravo Co. 3/7 INF. When we returned home after the invasion of Iraq. I was quoted in this book but under another soldiers name. All the details are not written and soldiers who should have been recognized were not. Probably because they were privates. Some of the HEROES were not alone. The writer failed to mention their names and he was well aware of the details. We were voice and video recorded during interviews. This comment is not to take away from the heroes mentioned. This is about the men who stood and fought literally right beside the heroes mentioned. Writer is aware of these men.

This World War II what-if novel picks up where Fox on the Rhine (an alternate history of the Battle of the Bulge) ended, with a disillusioned Field Marshal Rommel surrendering his armies to the Allies, but continuing operations against the Nazis under the tutelage of General Patton's forces. Soon President Roosevelt sees the value of founding a German rump state to help transfer power and reconstruct the country, just as the Allies did in Italy. As the new commander of the German Republican Army, Rommel operates alongside Patton's Third Army, creating a sort of WWII "Dream Team" for war gamers. Imagining how the dignified, sympathetic German commander might have reacted to the full revelation of Nazi atrocities, Niles and Dobson depict Rommel as shaken to the very core by his complicity in Hitler's final solution. The authors' attention to military detail and maneuvers would satisfy any drill instructor, and they imbue even minor historical characters with authenticity and personality, demonstrating how an individual's actions and reactions shape history. The outstanding sequel to Fox on the Rhine (2000) continues Niles and Dobson's alternate World War II to its bloody conclusion. The Soviet Union reenters the war, at first fighting both Himmler's reeling Third Reich and the new German Republic, a nation-in-arms under the effective leadership of the Allies' newest general, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Many of the unfolding events are rendered from the perspective of Rommel and his entourage, much of the rest through the eyes of various old friends from the 19th Armored Division. The Third Reich's side appears as seen by ruthless SS Colonel Joachim Piefer, but even more by the memorable Lukas Vogel, who comes of age as a Waffen SS lieutenant before his sixteenth birthday. Character-centered alternate history is not that common, and this is an eminently successful example of it, thanks to Niles and Dobson's work on real and fictional characterizations alike and their choice of Rommel as principal protagonist. Standing head and shoulders above its predecessor, this is must reading for imaginative WWII buffs. Roland Green

An exciting sequel to "Fox on the Rhine"!

I was very pleased to see that authors Miles and Dobson followed up the entertaining "Fox on the Rhine" with a continuation of the story line to a more satisfying conclusion.
At the end of the first novel , "The Fox" , Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel , has rather preemptorally surrendered to the allied army after the bridges across the Meuse were bombed by allied aircraft , stranding a large segment of the Panzerarmee on the other side without a chance of resupply.
In "Fox at the Front" , we are treated to the reasons for Rommel's prompt capitulation. We then see Rommel as a true German patriot , wanting to save his homeland from further devestation and subjugation by the Soviet Union. The other really central and essental character is US general George S. Patton , old "blood and guts" himself. Initially , Rommel's surrender order is obeyed by the elements of the Wehrmacht under his immediate control , but the agressive Obersturmbahnfuhrer Jochen Peiper of the SS prevents the forces under general Heinz Guderian from complying with the order. The SS divisions wind up attacking the remaining Wehrmacht forces , causing the emergency formation of an Allied-German alliance with the surrendered forces under Rommel's command.
Basically , the war continues : "German Republic" forces , allong with Patton's 3rd Army continue to pursue Peiper's SS forces through the Rheinpfaltz , and force the crossing of the Rhine itself in an effort to terminate the conflict. Enter the Russians ; Stalin sees an opportunity for an easy victory in the east , and hence breaks the "truce" earlier negotiated with Heinrich Himmler.
Many subplots and new characters keep the reader well entertained. Many of the characters from the first novel , such as Rommel's devoted driver , Kark-Heinz Claussen , find expanded roles in this sequel. Through many exciting twists and turns , we are brought to a rousing finish at the siege of Berlin -- a standoff between the Grman-American-British forces facing the Soviet juggernaut of Marshall's Zukhov and Konev.
My general "take" on this AH novel : MUCH better than the first effort ; the authors cleaned up their usage of the German military ranks , including the somewhat arcane SS ranks. The characters are not as "cartoon-like" as in the "Fox on the Rhine" , and are much more three dimensional. There are actually exceptional descriptive writing passages later in the book. The writing styles have improved alot , and the action tends to flow more seamlessly than before. Overall a strong 4 star effort , and definitely "must read".

WWII That Might Have Been

Fox at the Front is an alternative history, WWII thriller that takes us from the collapse of German's last Western offensive (as chronicled in the book's predecessor Fox on the Rhine) through to the end of the war. Central to the book is the idea of thoughtful, conscientious actors making decisions in the face of nothing but bad choices. As one of the main characters explains, making a good choice is easy. It's when someone must choose between several horrific alternatives that the true measure of a person can be discovered.
The overarching historical events-from Rommel's defection to the Allies (with a large chunk of the German armies), to the establishment of a German Republic separate from Nazi Germany, to the discovery of the concentration camps, to the fallout of the secret treaty between Himmler and Stalin, to the bitter-end fighting of the SS, to the inexorable advance of the Soviet legions-challenge the characters both big and small. Insights into the global vision of Roosevelt and Stalin and the regional concerns of Rommel, Patton, Himmler, and Eisenhower are balanced by sympathetic depictions of extraordinary "joe averages"-Rommel's mechanically skilled and devoted driver, an ex-Hitler Youth American intelligence officer, a battle scarred spearheading tank commander, a too-young zealous SS trooper, an up-and-coming Soviet commissar, a long-in-the-tooth AP editor turned field reporter, and many more. The actions and words of the historical characters offer interesting glimpses of their personalities while the three-dimensional portrayal of the "lesser" actors puts a human face on world-shattering events.
As a casual WWII fan, I learned many interesting things from this book. The vast resources in both men and machines of the Soviet Union emphasized just how outmatched the Germans were on the Eastern Front. So numerous were those forces that combining the Allied and German forces together still left them vastly outnumbered. This brings home the absurdity of the idea of crushing Communism after defeating the Nazis. The Western world was fortunate that Stalin decided not to press his advantage and take more of Europe in those closing days. In view of this overwhelming mismatch, Roosevelt's willingness to "give" Stalin Eastern Europe in an effort to build a lasting peace is presented as not only reasonable but perhaps the only acceptable choice available. At one point, Roosevelt expresses his faith that history would validate Western representative democracy over Soviet-style Communism. This forms a neat rationale justifying the least atrocious of otherwise nightmarish choices.
Best of all, the fascinating historical interplay is packaged in a heck of a page-turning story. It's one of the those books that a guilty glance at the lateness of the hour is excused by a little voice saying "just one more chapter."
The book left me with one major question for Niles and Dobson-What the heck is going on in the Pacific?

Brilliant!

This is an absolutely riveting, page-turner of a book. The plot is amazingly sophisticated -- diverging from real events in absolutely plausible ways that demonstrate just how contingent history is - and the characters are brilliantly drawn and so true to life one gets a deeper understanding of the real personalities that shaped (actual) history. This is, for instance, one of the best portraits of Patton since George C. Scott's immortal movie portrayal, and a completely engrossing dissection of Rommel, his nemesis cum ally in this alternative universe. The character of Franklin Roosevelt is drawn with a fine and subtle insight, befitting the man himself, and Stalin is absolutely chilling - the more so for his almost seeming normality. If you want a book that you can't put down and that brings the strategy, tactics, horror and triumph of war alive, read Fox at the Front.

Feast for the eyes and food for the soul

This book is for anyone who loves light, space, movement and the hand of a sure artisan. Yes, it is a book about dance, but that's like saying that the book of Genesis is a book about snakes. Jack and Linda Vartoogian beautifully convey the joyful, aching essence of dance -- human expression at its most serious, profane, holy, silly and transcendent. And they do it in a big book that should be very expensive.
I have dozens of coffee table books on the shelf. This one stays on the coffee table. Why?
I love this book. As a sometime professional photographer, magazine editor and full-time writer, I recognize the obstacles that the Vartoogians met and overcame. What eludes me is their unerring sense of timing and composition. Three decades ago I spent two semesters at BU learning how to capture motion with a 35 mm camera. By then, the Vartoogians were veterans. My good professor could have saved his breath by letting me shadow this gifted couple to Japan, Turkey, China, Korea, Africa, Turkey, to the swamps of Louisiana, to the glitter of Studio 54, the grit of Brooklyn's mean streets and the grandeur of the Lincoln Center and Covent Garden. What a fantasy-education!
But now we have "The Living World of Dance" and all of us can see how it is done: break dancing, line dancing, ballet, butoh, tango, tap, flamenco, whirling dervishes -- to feebly hint at the scope of this book. Color photos dominate, but the b&w selection is ample and perfect. The text by Carol Cooper Garey is just enough to inform us without distracting us.
The dust jacket mentions the Vartoogians' 1997 Nureyev exhibition which I saw on one of my rare visits to NYC. It was all black and white (mostly Tri-X, I later learned) with utterly hypnotic grays. Some of these prints are in the book and remain my favorites. Linda's photo of the late master at the bar speaks volumes about our loss.
Being in the business, I check the byline or photo credit before I look at a story or photo. "Vartoogian" has appeared for years in the New York Times beneath black and white images. Sometimes I would catch a color shot in a national and or international magazine. I'll spot a dancer on a cover and fumble to the credits. Hmmmm. If it's not Jack and Linda, it is someone who studied them or just exhibited a momentary flash of genius.
Finally this book is more than dance and pictures. The Vartoogians' world is a whole world. This perspective was eloquently presented in 1955 with the publication the "The Family of Man." (Museum of Modern Art.) Revisiting that landmark volume I was struck by the number of dance photos selected by Edward Steichen for the book. Perhaps this book subconsciously inspired Jack and Linda. The same love of humanity shines forth in both books. Carl Sandburg, in the Forward of "Family" could be speaking of "The Living World of Dance" when he writes:
"A camera testament, a drama of the grand canyon of humanity, an epic woven of fun, mystery and holiness..."
Like "Family," this book is more than a feast for the eyes; it is food for the soul.

A Book That Gives You Exactly What It Promises Within the First Two Pages

A. Lee Martinez writes humorous fantasy stories, and this is no different. If you like "The Dresden Files" (by Jim Butcher) be aware that the "voice" of the robot is very similar, albeit more mechanically detached, because, y'know, robot.
The writing style, descriptions and general plot are all accessible to any age, easy to get into, and difficult to put down. There is a satisfying conclusion, with laughs, action and mystery throughout.

Read the first couple of pages in the preview. If it seems interesting at all to you, then you'll probably like it. I've read it through twice. Good book.

The Big Sleep meets I Robot.

Martinez does a noir/meets I-Robot with pretty decent success. His characters are standard noir pulp tropes done well, which is much more difficult that it looks. All in all a nice read to while away a couple of hours.

The Maltese Falcon meets I, Robot

Martinez is back in top form! I had been rather disappointed in "In the Company of Ogres" for its lack of plot although it had plenty of wisecracks, and disappointed a bit in "A Nameless Witch" for being a bit too solemn - but here in "Automatic Detective" we are back to having novel characters, a fast-moving plot, AND all the wisecracks, in a book as original as Martinez' first, "Gil's All-Fright Diner."

Saying that it's original doesn't mean there isn't any history to it. In order to get the most possible fun out of reading this book, you have to read some of the inspirations behind it. Most obviously, Isaac Asimov's "Caves of Steel" and any Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler - but also Asimov's "I, Robot" stories. For the Hammett, seeing the movie will do; for the Asimov, you definitely need to read the books; the movie called "I, Robot" will NOT cut it. One of the things to note in the robot stories is the sexism of the times back then implicit in the characterization of Susan Calvin, the robot engineer - so that you can see just how much fun Lucia Napier really is! Also, besides those, you should read Alfred Bester's story "Fondly Fahrenheit" (it's been anthologized lots, for example here: Virtual Unrealities: The Short Fiction of Alfred Bester). All reet!

I can detect other influences here - classic Harry Harrison and Larry Niven, including Gil the ARM, for example - but I don't want this to sound too much like an academic analysis, so I'll leave you to do those comparisons yourself.

As the editorial and other reviews mention plenty about the plot, I won't repeat it all here. Instead, I'll just give you some examples of the things I particularly liked. The sly turns of phrase:
"Moriarty Asylum for the Criminally Inventive was the cold, dark box where they locked away all the great evil geniuses."

The characters: Jung, who is a gorilla full citizen - his favorite reading is Jane Austen - is changing from his cab driver's uniform, complete with bow tie, into clothes to go out to a nightclub, and says to Mack, "Let me get out of this monkey suit."

The critters: a yellow fuzzy hybrid of a dachshund and a pillbug, which rolls into a ball and plays with kids.

There's also a little girl genius, thugs both robot and human, little green men, aliens, a shrink for robots... lots of great characters. The plot gets solved as satisfyingly as any mystery, and there's a great ending in the classic tradition (which also happened to remind me of the ending of Will Shetterly's "Chimera" Chimera - if you like this book, try that one too!)

Family reading alert: safe for teens, even young ones, if they happen to have the vocabulary to have long since made their way through all the available juvenile fiction and are starting to browse the grown-up science fiction area. There's no sex, very little that anyone could characterize as bad language, and while there is the violence one might expect in a hard-boiled detective mystery, it is mostly robot-on-robot violence and not too graphic. I mention this not because I think there's anything wrong with sex, cursing, and violence if they have a legitimate place in the plot, but I know that many parents would like their kids to have limited exposure to those, especially if they already get too much on TV.

In short: great read, fast-paced, funny, and I'd love to see a sequel.

Mr. Veilleur could feel the approaching summer storm in his bones as he sat in a shady corner of St. Ann’s cemetery in Bayside. He had the place to himself. In fact, he seemed to have most of the five boroughs to himself. Labor Day weekend. And a hot one. Anyone who could afford to had fled upstate or to the Long Island beaches. The rest were inside, slumped before their air conditioners. Even the homeless were off the streets, crouched in the relative cool of the subways.
The sun poured liquid fire through the hazy midday sky. Not a cloud in sight. But here in the shade of this leaning oak, Mr. Veilleur knew the weather was going to change soon, could read it from the worsening ache in his knees, hips, and back.

He had been making sporadic trips to this corner of the cemetery since he’d first sensed the wrongness here. That had been on a snowy winter night many years ago. It had taken him a while, but he’d finally located the spot.
A grave, which was perfectly natural, this being a cemetery. This grave was not like the others, however. This one had no marker. But something else made this grave special: Nothing would grow over it.
Through the years Mr. Veilleur had seen the cemetery’s gardeners try to seed it, sod it, even plant it with various ground covers like periwinkle, pachysandra, and ivy. They took root well all around, but nothing survived in the four-foot oblong patch over the grave.
Of course, they didn’t know it was a grave. Only Mr. Veilleur and the one who had dug the hole knew that. And surely one other.
Mr. Veilleur did not come here often. Travel was not easy for him, even to another part of the city he had called home since the end of World War Two. Gone were the days when he walked where he wished, fearing no one. Now his eyes were bad; his back was stiff and canted forward; he leaned on a cane when he walked, and he walked slowly. He had an old man’s body and he had to take appropriate precautions.
Age had not dampened his curiosity, however. He didn’t know who had dug the grave, or who was in it. But whoever lay down there below the dirt and rocks had been touched by the enemy … the Otherness.
The enemy had been growing steadily stronger for more than two decades now. But growing carefully, staying hidden. Good thing too, for he had no one to oppose him. But he did not know that. He was waiting. For what? A sign? A particular event? Perhaps the one buried below was part of the answer. Perhaps the occupant had nothing to do with the enemy’s quiescence.
No matter—as long as the enemy remained inactive. For the longer the enemy delayed, the closer Mr. Veilleur would be to reaching the end of his days. And then he would be spared witnessing the chaotic horrors to come. His Heir would shoulder that burden.
A shadow fell across him and a sudden gust of wind chilled the perspiration that coated his skin. He looked up. Clouds were moving in, obscuring the sun. Time to go.
He stood and stared one last time at the bare dirt over the unmarked grave. He knew he would be back again. And again. Too many questions about this grave and its occupant. He sensed unfinished business here.
Because the grave’s occupant did not rest easy. Did not, in fact, rest at all.
Mr. Veilleur turned and made his unsteady way out of St. Ann’s cemetery. It would be good to get back to the cool apartment and get his feet up and have a glass of iced tea. He tried to believe that his wife had missed him during his absence, but with her mind the way it was, Magda probably hadn’t even realized he was gone.

In defense of Reprisal...

Reprisal is the second book of the Nightworld Trilogy; part of the Adversary Cycle from F. Paul Wilson. This book continues the story begun in "Reborn", of the return of Rasalom (a sort of shadowy, lord or darkness character) and the efforts of a small group of enlighted souls who try to thwart him (or just merely survive). Along the way, Rasalom tries to break their spirits by performing unspeakable acts of evil.
Although some of the story devices are rather gruesome (as stated in the previous review), they completely in line with the story and with its main character. All in all, a very good effort by the author and and excellent second-book-in-a-trilogy.

A gripping (but brutal) horror novel willing to go farther than you expect

According to F. Paul Wilson himself, Reprisal is one of the hardest books he's ever written, and one section of the book was so troubling that his wife wouldn't speak to him for three days. Once you've read the book, you won't be surprised either. Reprisal is a brutal, horrific novel that contains some of the most unsettling and nightmarish moments I've read, period, not just in Wilson's work. The events that occur over Christmas Week to a young priest are likely to stick with me for a long, long time, and that's due in no small part to Wilson's commitment to not only the story but his characters as well. The fact that such a scene plays so perfectly in the overall book - which finds characters from Reborn reconnecting many years later, sometimes unbeknownst to each other, as one of them seeks vengeance - is just a testament to what a phenomenal horror novel Reprisal really is. By the time the book reaches its conclusion and we realize exactly how epic the scope of this revenge truly is, it's hard not to be staggered and unsettled by what we've witnessed. What's more, by having this book lead directly into the apocalyptic finale, Wilson is free to end the book in a grim fashion befitting the bleak read that precedes it. Reprisal is a rough read by any standard, and even in Wilson's horror-infused world, it stands out as a nasty piece of work. But for those who are up for it, I can't recommend it enough; it's a gripping read by any imaginable standard.

Slow burn thriller chills bones while stabbing at heart.

Reprisal represents a pretty serious shift in the Adversary Cycle's tone and focus. This is an intimate psychological horror story about corruption and revenge (hence the title) rather than conspiracy or otherworldly beings/monsters, at least on the surface. The Evil One has been reborn and, in an interesting twist, decides to have some fun torturing a surviving character from Reborn by defiling and destroying those close to him. These assaults are pretty spine chilling in their utterly soulless ferocity and, as one review points out, may offend some feint of heart readers. Be warned, some sequences will leave you pretty shaken up. Recommended.

Who wins this violent struggle probably won't come as a surprise either, but Alten's imaginative tale will keep readers turning the pages to make certain their guess, intuition, or "readerly" instinct is correct. fresh exciting prehistoric Jaws vs. humans thriller

Now in his sixties, married to Terry and living in Tampa with her and their two teens, Jonas Taylor feels old and tired as financial sharks surround him demanding payments of past due bills. Jonas nostalgically thinks back to his glory days when he was in his mid forties and captured Angel the prehistoric Megalodon shark that terrorized the Mariana Trench. However, that was the highlight film of his life; now he owes a ton of money and has to deal with a recalcitrant female teen.
When the top-rated reality TV show Daredevils offers Jonas a chance to provide expert commentary on a contest in the South Pacific, he leaps at the opportunity. Taking his daughter with him, Jonas joins the TV show.
Meanwhile Terry investigates whale beachings off Vancouver Island. Neither of the spouses is aware that they have entered the latest feeding zone of "Megs" and will soon be battling for their lives as they did before (see MEG and THE TRENCH).
The third exciting Prehistoric Jaws vs. humans thriller is fast-paced especially Megs who steal the show once again. Steve Alten refreshes his series through Jonas is aging not so gracefully as he wonders how two decades have almost past since he had his fifteen minutes of fame and now has a chance to recapture somewhat his glorious past. Much of the action is similar to the previous novels with the shark feeding, man vs. man disputing, and shark vs. hero/heroine scenes, but the aging cast makes it seem new leading to a swimmingly fine time for the Megsters.

A straitlaced novice doctor gets initiated into the unorthodox world of a crafty rural sawbones in Taylor's American debut. Barry Laverty is fresh out of school and uncertain about what type of medicine he should practice when he answers an ad for a physician's assistant in Ballybucklebo, a small Northern Ireland town populated, it seems, entirely by eccentrics. Laverty is initially taken aback by his new boss, Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly, whom he meets as O'Reilly is literally throwing a patient out of his office. Laverty spends most of the novel swaying between understanding O'Reilly's methods and second-guessing the boxer turned doctor who dishes out plenty of placebos and isn't above telling a white lie or a crude joke to worried patients. Though Laverty often comes across as painfully uptight, he also has an endearing-for-its-awkwardness streak that only surfaces around Patricia Spence, though she'd rather focus on her civil engineering studies than make time for a boyfriend. Serving as a foil to all the innocent fun is the lecherous, greedy Councillor Bishop, who, thanks to a scheming O'Reilly and a reluctant Laverty, gets his comeuppance. Despite the occasional whimsy overload, Taylor's novel makes for escapist, delightful fun. (Feb.)

About the Author

Literacy is important so you can read books like this

The novel An Irish Country Doctortakes place in the 1960s, and although medical miracles are beginning to appear, the good Dr. O'Reilly practices his own medicine, his own way of treating this town full of eccentric patients. And he treats them very successfully, thank you.

Dr. Laverty, on the other hand, insistsmodern medicine and going strictly by the rulesare the only ways of properly healing patients.

It doesn't take long for Laverty to find a love interest, the beautiful Patricia Spence, a young lady determined to become an engineer.She soon becomes one of the many stumbling blocks Laverty must overcome to be the person and the doctor he wants to be.

As Laverty works as O'Reilly's assistant, he learns about love, loss of love and the hard knocks life can dish out in general and that he is not immune to experiencing some of life's more difficult situations himself.

Author Patrick Taylor has produced a beautiful story, intelligently written and filled with interesting characters. Richly illustrated with word pictures, the reader easily sees the beautiful Irish landscape, the rag-tag populace - O'Reilly's patients - that joyfully fill this novel's pages. Animals play an important role in the story. Laverty soon learns that everything has the ability to teach him something. I truly became involved in the lives of the doctors and their supporting cast of characters. The novel doesn't hold many surprises, but it is so lyricallywritten that it held my attention from the first page until the last.

The back of the book has a glossary which translates the "Ulster-Scots dialect," which is generously used throughout the book and lends much color and interest to the story, but does indeed, look like a foreign language to the uninitiated.

There is also an Afterword by Mrs. "Kinky" Kincaid, O'Reilly's faithful and wise housekeeper and cook. This portion of the novel offers a few of Mrs. Kincaid's recipes.

I found An Irish Country Doctor to be a refreshing change from the novels that line the shelves of today's book stores. If I had to put the book down while reading, I couldn't wait to get back to it, and for me, that's the sign of a good book.

The author was born and raised in Bangor County Down in Northern Ireland and did indeed work at one time as a doctor in rural Ireland. That's why his novel rings with such authenticity.

I read a lot of murder mysteries, but sometimes I need some just good storytelling with no evil undertones. That's when I turned to authors like Jan Karon, and now Patrick Taylor. I can hardly wait to continue to sprinkle these lovely - and quirky - characters and feel-good stories among my other reading. I just may have to plan a trip to Ireland to see if I can locate some semblance of the world in Patrick Taylor's books.

An Enjoyable Read

It doesn't take long for the story to grab you and hold tight. I would say it's on a level with Jan Karon's Mitford series and Philip Gulley's Harmony series. Portrays village life through the eyes of a new doctor who's been taken on to assist a larger-than-life old doctor. Lots of memorable, somewhat eccentric characters who play off each other quite well. I will certainly be reading more of the series.

Chapter 1
The August sun struck in through the open window and burned on Andrew Rusch’s bare legs until discomfort dragged him awake from the depths of heavy sleep. Only slowly did he become aware of the heat and the damp and gritty sheet beneath his body. He rubbed at his gummed-shut eyelids, then lay there, staring up at the cracked and stained plaster of the ceiling, only half awake and experiencing a feeling of dislocation, not knowing in those first waking moments just where he was, although he had lived in this room for over seven years. He yawned and the odd sensation slipped away while he groped for the watch that he always put on the chair next to the bed, then he yawned again as he blinked at the hands mistily seen behind the scratched crystal. Seven... seven o’clock in the morning, and there was a little number 9 in the middle of the square window. Monday, the ninth of August, 1999—and hot as a furnace already, with the city still imbedded in the heat wave that had baked and suffocated New York for the past ten days. Andy scratched at a trickle of perspiration on his side, then moved his legs out of the patch of sunlight and bunched the pillow up under his neck. From the other side of the thin partition that divided the room in half there came a clanking whir that quickly rose to a high-pitched drone.
"Morning..." he shouted over the sound, then began coughing. Still coughing he reluctantly stood and crossed the room to draw a glass of water from the wall tank; it came out in a thin, brownish trickle. He swallowed it, then rapped the dial on the tank with his knuckles and the needle bobbed up and down close to the Empty mark. It needed filling, he would have to see to that before he signed in at four o’clock at the precinct. The day had begun.
A full-length mirror with a crack running down it was fixed to the front of the hulking wardrobe and he poked his face close to it, rubbing at his bristly jaw. He would have to shave before he went in. No one should ever look at himself in the morning, naked and revealed, he decided with distaste, frowning at the dead white of his skin and the slight bow to his legs that was usually concealed by his pants. And how did he manage to have ribs that stuck out like those of a starved horse, as well as a growing potbelly—both at the same time? He kneaded the soft flesh and thought that it must be the starchy diet, that and sitting around on his chunk most of the time. But at least the fat wasn’t showing on his face. His forehead was a little higher each year, but wasn’t too obvious as long as his hair was cropped short. You have just turned thirty, he thought to himself, and the wrinkles are already starting around your eyes. And your nose is too big—wasn’t it Uncle Brian who always said that was because there was Welsh blood in the family? And your canine teeth are a little too obvious so when you smile you look a bit like a hyena. You’re a handsome devil, Andy Rusch, and when was the last time you had a date? He scowled at himself, then went to look for a handkerchief to blow his impressive Welsh nose.
There was just a single pair of clean undershorts in the drawer and he pulled them on; that was another thing he had to remember today, to get some washing done. The squealing whine was still coming from the other side of the partition as he pushed through the connecting door.
"You’re going to give yourself a coronary, Sol," he told the gray-bearded man who was perched on the wheelless bicycle, pedaling so industriously that perspiration ran down his chest and soaked into the bath towel that he wore tied around his waist.
"Never a coronary," Solomon Kahn gasped out, pumping steadily. "I been doing this every day for so long that my ticker would miss it if I stopped. And no cholesterol in my arteries either since regular flushing with alcohol takes care of that. And no lung cancer since I couldn’t afford to smoke even if I wanted to, which I don’t. And at the age of seventy-five no prostatitis because..."
"Sol, please—spare me the horrible details on an empty stomach. Do you have an ice cube to spare?"
"Take two—it’s a hot day. And don’t leave the door open too long."
Andy opened the small refrigerator that squatted against the wall and quickly took out the plastic container of margarine, then squeezed two ice cubes from the tray into a glass and slammed the door. He filled the glass with water from the wall tank and put it on the table next to the margarine. "Have you eaten yet?" he asked.
"I’ll join you, these things should be charged by now."
Sol stopped pedaling and the whine died away to a moan, then vanished. He disconnected the wires from the electrical generator that was geared to the rear axle of the bike, and carefully coiled them up next to the four black automobile storage batteries that were racked on top of the refrigerator. Then, after wiping his hands on his soiled towel sarong, he pulled out one of the bucket seats salvaged from an ancient 1975 Ford, and sat down across the table from Andy.
"I heard the six o’clock news," he said. "The Eldsters are organizing another protest march today on relief headquarters. That’s where you’ll see coronaries!"
"I won’t, thank God, I’m not on until four and Union Square isn’t in our precinct." He opened the breadbox and took out one of the six-inch-square red crackers, then pushed the box over to Sol. He spread margarine thinly on it and took a bite, wrinkling his nose as he chewed. "I think this margarine has turned."
"How can you tell?" Sol grunted, biting into one of the dry crackers. "Anything made from motor oil and whale blubber is turned to begin with."
"Now you begin to sound like a naturist," Andy said, washing his cracker down with cold water. "There’s hardly any flavor at all to the fats made from petrochemicals and you know there aren’t any whales left so they can’t use blubber—it’s just good chlorella oil."
"Whales, plankton, herring oil, it’s all the same. Tastes fishy. I’ll take mine dry so I don’t grow no fins." There was a sudden staccato rapping on the door and he groaned. "Not yet eight o’clock and already they are after you."
"It could be anything," Andy said, starting for the door.
"It could be but it’s not, that’s the callboy’s knock and you know it as well as I do and I bet you dollars to doughnuts that’s just who it is. See?" He nodded with gloomy satisfaction when Andy unlocked the door and they saw the skinny, bare-legged messenger standing in the dark hall.
"What do you want, Woody?" Andy asked.
"I don’ wan’ no-fin," Woody lisped over his bare gums. Though he was in his early twenties he didn’t have a tooth in his head. "Lieutenan’ says bring, I bring." He handed Andy the message board with his name written on the outside.
Andy turned toward the light and opened it, reading the lieutenant’s spiky scrawl on the slate, then took the chalk and scribbled his initials after it and returned it to the messenger. He closed the door behind him and went back to finish his breakfast, frowning in thought.
"Don’t look at me that way," Sol said, "I didn’t send the message.

Prophetic

This book scared the hell out of me when I read it as a young teenager back in the 60's, because it was so believable. I was sure this was what the future of America held. At the time, overpopulation was a big issue, what with books like Paul Ehrlich's The Population Bomb, The 20th Century Book of the Dead by Gil Elliot, and so on, dramatizing the issue. There seemed no doubt in many people's minds that something similar to the world portrayed in this novel would be the reality in 35 years if nothing were done to halt the population explosion, and since nothing really was being done in that regard, this seemed like a foregone conclusion.
Well, 35 years later the world hasn't quite worked out this way, which still amazes me no end, although David Brin's recent novel, Earth, is an updated reprisal of this theme. Harrison's book is still a great read. Another book on the same theme that came out a few years later was John Brunner's novel, Stand on Zanzibar, which won a Hugo award for that year. So if you enjoyed this book you might also want to try these two novels.

Better than the movie

As I read the book, I did have images of Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson in my mind, but this is nothing like the movie. I really enjoyed this book. But still, don't eat the soylent green.
