A Masterpiece that Demands the Reader's Full Attention

This, dear prospective reader, is a masterpiece.
Like many masterpieces, it is not easily taken in. Erikson is at the height of his powers here, and it is at once formidable, dismaying, and richly rewarding - if you put in the effort that a work at this level demands.
Like all Erikson stories, the world-building is rich and detailed. Going beyond his well-known modus operandi here, in Fall of Light Erikson opens new windows into the minds of the characters, laying bare themes that exist and create conflict in us all. Classic elements of honor versus love, greed versus duty, avarice versus sacrifice permeate every page.
The writing is prose-laden, poetic and complex, like a fine gourmet meal. As such, gluttonous consumption of the story will likely leave the bingeing reader with a strong sense of literary indigestion. Consume this with the respect it deserves.
The story itself continues to lay the foundations of the Malazan mythopoeia found in Erikson's and Esslemont's seminal works. For those who enjoyed those books, this is almost a guilty pleasure as origins unfold and great events are put into motion.
Fall of Light is a feast indeed, one that will require a dedicated and refined palate.

Not for casual reading.

This is not for everyone, hence the reviewer who recommended not to buy this. No wonder the Malazan books don't often come up in these meaningless lists.
This book delivered as expected and I am amazed that the author still has it in him to produce works of this caliber after writing a truly 'epic' 10 book series. Since that series and the 'Forge of Darkness', I have devoured all kinds of fantasy and science fiction books. Some felt possibly even better (Mark Lawrence, embers of Illeniel series etc). But there is truly no comparison. Steven Erikson's books are not just about fighting and violence and plot and magic. Certainly no one does any of these better than him (in my opinion) but all the 'philosophy' sets his books apart. I am not interested in reading philosophy but books like this that include introspection on human nature, emotions etc while telling a mesmerizing story are truly rewarding to read.
This is how 'dark' 'gritty' fantasy is written.
More to the point, it looks like many of the unanswered questions from the Malazan series are being answered in this series. Forge of Darkness turned expectations/theories on their heads, and this book continues the theme without making it all implausible. The pace is slow but I wanted this book to last as long as it could, so no complaints there personally. There is no 'convergence' towards the end unlike in the Malazan books but I am pretty sure it will occur in the next book. The war on death was handled well and I think he successfully split this storyline between this book and the next without losing any coherence.

Can I just start by saying that I love steven erikson

Can I just start by saying that I love steven erikson. I love he's books and I have read all his books, some of them multiple times. So I was very eager to read this latest book. I gave the book a rating of 3 stars and I feel I'm been generous in giving it 3 stars, I think my love of his books stopped me from giving it 2. I found the pace of this book so slow, there were so many monologues where someone people talked on and on about nothing. I found it very hard to read at times because at times I didn't know what two characters were talking about. Another fault I had with this book and its probably my biggest is that normally when I'm reading a steven erikson book I really care for some of the characters. I mean really care. Erikson has a way of creating such complex and intriguing characters that when some of them die I would be upset. In this book there was no character that I cared for what happened to them. Which was a shame. Now that's all the bad stuff. On the plus side erikson still is the best at describing action in such a way that it's very easy to visualize in my head and his use of humour in tense situations is top class
