A great second volume
By T. Simons
I first picked up the original printing of the first volume of thisanthology when I was a small child, around ten years old, and the first story in it ("A Martian Oddyssey") was so good that I put the book back down and didn't read the rest of it for another year because I was afraid none of the other stories in there could possibly be as good.

The second two volumes took me years to track down; II B I managed to find in a sale of discards from my school library; II A I didn't find at all until Amazon came along.

The conceit of this series is that the Science Fiction Writers of America picked the best short stories, novellas, and novels from before the Nebula Awards were commenced in 1965, and published them as a hall-of-fame anthology. Volume 1 collected the short stories and volume II (A and B) collected the novellas -- essentially, one stop volumes of all the "Nebula Emeritus" books, the sci-fi that professional SF writers of the sixties felt had most influenced and impacted them up to that point.

As such, this series is perfect for two groups of people: people who are completely ignorant of sci fi, and people who want to gain a better critical understanding of sci fi and its history as a genre. You can't find a better starting place, because these are the stories that the great modern SF writers started on, so by reading these, you'll understand more about what modern writers are doing, and you'll have the opportunity to experience the tropes first hand, from the stories that coined them, not in later knockoffs.

This volume (II A) I prefer slightly less than I and II B, if only because by the time I'd found it, I was older and had read some of the stories elsewhere and seen the tropes before, so it didn't have quite the same glow to it as the other two did, read in childhood; I also feel a couple of the stories in here aren't quite up to the same level as the rest. Still, there are some definite essentials -- "Universe" was the first generation-ship story, "Who Goes There?" is the source story for John Carpenter's film _The Thing_, The Marching Morons is an early version of the conceit in Idiocracy, etc.

Probably the best benefit of these volumes is that they'll give you a general familiarity with the big names of Golden Age SF, so that you'll know who you like and don't and whose works you want to find more of. If you're looking to expand your knowledge of Golden Age era SF, this series is an excellent place to start, and you'll probably find yourself tracking down most of the other works by most of these authors. I would, however, point you to Volume 1 first, especially if you're new to the genre.

This volume contains:

Call Me Joe by Poul Anderson
Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr.
Nerves by Lester Del Rey
Universe by Robert A. Heinlein
The Marching Morons by C.M. Kornbluth
Vintage Season by Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore
. . . And Then There Were None by Eric Frank Russell
The Ballad of Lost C'Mell by Cordwainer Smith
Baby is Three by Theodore Sturgeon
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
With Folded Hands by Jack Williamson

Landmarks of Science Fiction
By G. Styles
You'd never guess from looking at the bookstore shelves today, but collections of short works like these used to be the mainstay of science fiction. Tor Books deserves kudos for bringing this collection of classic novellas from sf's Golden Age back into print, and in hardcover, too, with Volume 2B presumably still to come.

The novella, longer than a short story, shorter than a full novel, is the ideal length for science fiction, providing enough room for an author to present an idea and work through all its implications, without the padding that often seems obligatory for marketing purposes today.

This book includes key works by some of the field's biggest names from the 1940s and 50s. Most will probably be new to anyone who started reading science fiction after the 1980s, including Campbell's "Who Goes There", filmed twice as "The Thing" but much creepier in print, and Lester del Rey's "Nerves", which pre-dated Three Mile Island and Chernobyl by decades.

While the science may have dated, these are still terrific stories.

A must read for SF fans.
By E. Thayer
This anthology includes my personal favorites: The tale of a dumbed down society in "The Marching Morons" by C.M. Kornbluth, and "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. "Who Goes There" is beyond excellent ~ I still get nightmares ~ and was the basis for both films titled "The Thing." Isaac Asimov opines in his biography "I, Asimov" that "Who Goes There?" is the finest science fiction story ever written. I tend to agree.

Who makes a calendar like this????
By NJB
Artwork selection: great, very nice Impressionist pieces, size of calendar spaces: great, it is a min-calendar so they're small, but the date numbers are smallish, so it leaves plenty of room to jot a small note, or date, layout: great, only small complaint is that the holiday dates are referenced in the lower margin, instead of within the date box..but I could live with that.

So WHY the 1 star?????? Because this calendar does NOT show you the previous month!!! Nevermind the next month!! Whoever heard of that??? I never even thought to look....every calendar I've ever used shows you the previous month, very small, in the blank area where the first week of the month is printed. MOST calendars also show you next next month....MANY calendars show you the previous two months in the 'first week' area, and the previous month in the 'last week' area. I bought this for my office - I can't use it because I'm ALWAYS referring to the previous month...I don't want to unclick the calendar & flip a page back!! I'm really annoyed! I can't return it, I opened it & transferred some January dates from my nice 2015 calendar... the helpful one.

Just bought another calendar...I don't like the pictures nearly as well, they're photos of parks - eh! BUT it's a usable format so it'll get a 5 star from me!! grrrrrr!!!!!

By Vandy
This calendar was for my Daughter. She likes pictures, so I am rating it a 2. On your website the size was not mentioned although it was pictured as an 8 x 10. I feel this advertisement was VERY deceptive. Also, it arrived in Order #102-4873016-7644245 with five other items, priced at $6.61 - the taxes of 3.39 and shipping and handling of $19.30 (which I was told were waived) were added after the total of 86.38. My bank statement shows a charge of $8.43 for this calendar. This is the first of several comments I intend to submit for my Christmas order. I can prove I was overcharged and misled on several of the items I ordered.

While the art is most assuredly beautiful, one cannot tell because the calendar is so small!!! Really small, stupidly small. It was my error in not reading the measurements, but who knew a wall calendar was manufactured for hobbits!?!

Artwork pops
By Yvonne
Quite tall/long so I put it together sideways on the table so I could get at all sides easily. The pieces are sturdy. It was a bit difficult in places but I liked the challenge. The colors are great and so is the design. Would recommend.

long narrow puzzle that might not fit on your puzzle table but otherwise...awesome puzzle
By bothellbuyer
I've done all of the Charley Harper puzzles now and enjoyed them all. Pomegranate does really nice puzzles....sturdy pieces that don't warp and delaminate all over the place and have a nice 'snick' feeling when you connect the right pieces. The pieces are standard in shape (not the wonky random shapes some companies offer) and aren't oversized. My only complaint was that I had to work it sidewise since it was very long and narrow and didn't fit on my usual puzzle table. Most 1000 piece puzzles fit just fine on this table, including the other Pomegranate Charley Harper puzzles I've worked.....not this one. I buy each new Charley Harper puzzle as it is offered without pause!

Like the picture, good to diffy up the areas for a small group to work on. The only disappointment is that sometimes pieces would fit perfectly but not be the right ones. Also, no interesting pieces, they are all squares with tabs or holes.

Excellent overview of the people, equipment, & uniforms.
By A Customer
Nice, quick source for a snapshot of what the commanders of the civil war wore, used, and how they distingused their rank. Excellent illustrations, and pictures of arms, uniforms, & equipment. Other pictures are the same ones you may see in most any other civil war history book. Good inside information on the commanders and the conditions in which they operated.

This is a very good book with lots of old photos that are large, sometimes an entire page. It's a large size book and I really like all the visual representation. I feel like I just went to a museum after looking at these photos.

Give Your Heart to the Hawks: A Tribute to the Mountain Men, by Winfred Blevins

Stunningly portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in the Golden Globe Award-winning and twelve-time Academy Award nominated film The Revenant, mountain man Hugh Glass’s harrowing journey 300 miles to civilization after being mauled by a grizzly bear and left for dead is just one of the incredible adventures Spur Award Winning author Win Blevins explores in Give Your Heart to the Hawks.
In addition to the captivating story of Hugh Glass, Win Blevins presents a poetic tribute to these dauntless "first Westerners" who explored the Great American West from the time of Lewis and Clark into the 1840s. As trappers in a hostile, trackless land, their exploits opened the gates of the mountains for the wagon trains of pioneers who followed them. Here, among many, are the enthralling stories of:

* John Colter, who, in 1808, naked and without weapons or food, escaped captivity by the Blackfeet and ran and walked 250 miles to Fort Lisa at the mouth of the Yellowstone River;
* Kit Carson, who ran away from home at age 17, became a legendary mountain man in his 20s and served as scout and guide for John C. Fremont's westward explorations of the 1840s;
* Jedediah Smith, a tall, gaunt, Bible-reading New Yorker whose trapping expeditions ranged from the Rockies to California and who was killed by Comanches on the Cimarron in 1831.

Review

“It was an epic time, which lasted hardly more than a third of a century before civilization swarmed west on trails the mountain men had blazed. Now Blevins sees they are paid the awed honor that is due them, in a book which has the drama and suspense of a novel.” ―Los Angeles Times

“No one since the great A. B. Guthrie, Jr., has a better feel for the world of the mountain man.” ―Don Coldsmith

“For the lover of the early West, it is good entertainment... with lots of color, suspense and excitement.” ―The Denver Post

The Alumni of Rocky Mountain College
By Theo Logos
Winfred Blevins' `Give Your Heart to the Hawks' is exactly what its sub title claims - a tribute to the Mountain Men. It is neither a historical novel nor a pure history. Rather, it is accurate history, albeit with Blevins' interpretation of the thoughts and emotions that the mountain men were experiencing during some of their most dangerous and daring exploits added. This technique removes the book from the roles of strict history, but works well in creating the tribute that the author intended, for his goal was not simply to chronicle the bones of their history, but to bring to life their wild and free existence and allow the reader to enter into the spirit of the mountain man's life.
Blevins does not attempt a comprehensive account of the mountain men. Some are covered extensively, like John Colter, the prototype mountain man, Jim Bridger, and Jed Smith, the most atypical and perhaps greatest of the mountain men. Others, like Old Bill Williams, Joe Walker, and Kit Carson are barely covered or mentioned only in passing. Blevins does not cover the mountain men of the southwest at all. Instead, he illuminates his chosen subjects in depth, choosing to fully explore the life that the mountain men lived rather than broadly covering the entire scope of their collective history.
To recreate the wild drama of the mountain man's life, Blevins tells some of the most thrilling tales of the era, like John Colter's desperate naked run from Indian braves pursuing him for sport, Hugh Glass' amazing solo trek through 300 miles of wilderness without weapons or any tools for survival after being left for dead when mauled by a grizzly, or Jed Smith's daring crossings of the desert and mountains to find a land route to California. He writes of these men, "Any man who survived for several years as a trapper, taking responsibility for his own survival alone in the wilds, had been schooled thoroughly by the Rocky Mountains. ...He had graduated from Rocky Mountain College, a pragmatic university that gave no degrees, but flunked men into their graves." Between the various stories of specific mountain men, he includes interludes that detail important aspects of their life and trade - trapping, yarning, rendezvous, buffalo - cuisine premiere, mountain craft, mountain mating, and trappers and Indians are a few of the interesting subjects of mountain life dealt with in these interludes. He also includes a few colorful accounts written by the rare, literate mountain man detailing their unique life. He succeeds admirably in breathing life into this too often neglected period of amazing individuals who blazed the way for the westward expansion of the American nation.
While Blevins' writing is not always stellar, he manages to create an effective and stirring tribute to the wild individuals who chose to live free in the Rocky Mountains. No one who is interested in the period should miss it. Both students of the period of the mountain men and fur trade and those looking for a good introduction to the subject will find `Give Your Heart to the Hawks' a fascinating and rewarding reading experience.

Best Book I've Ever Read
By A Customer
After having been an avid reader of books on many varied subjects over the last 40 years, I can truly say that this is the best book I have ever read on any subject, fiction and non-fiction. Anyone who desires to learn about the true life of freedom experienced by the mountain men or who wishes to learn of the history of the early West will not be disapointed with this book and will come away from the experience with a profound appreciation of the early trail-blazers. This is one of those books that you "can't put down." I will never give this book away but will purchase copies for my friends who have the same interests. Tom Dering

I Am Not A Serial Killer (John Cleaver), by Dan Wells

John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it.

He’s spent his life doing his best not to live up to his potential.

He’s obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn’t want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he’s written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation.

Dead bodies are normal to John. He likes them, actually. They don’t demand or expect the empathy he’s unable to offer. Perhaps that’s what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there’s something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat---and to appreciate what that difference means.

Now, for the first time, John has to confront a danger outside himself, a threat he can’t control, a menace to everything and everyone he would love, if only he could.

Dan Wells’s debut novel is the first volume of a trilogy that will keep you awake and then haunt your dreams.

From Publishers Weekly
The teenage (and innocent) John Wayne Cleaver swears he is not the serial killer that has emerged in his small town--despite his grisly name and a series of unpleasant and eerie similarities. His fascination with the killer leads him to launch his own investigation of sorts-- one that leads him to the identity of the murderer. There are shades of Jeff Lindsay's darkly comic Dexter series, but John Allen Nelson is miscast. His female voices are grating caricatures, and he cannot become the protagonist--his voice is too deep, assured, and assertive even when the text suggests otherwise. A Tor hardcover (Reviews, Feb. 1).

Review

“This dazzling, un-put-downable debut novel proves beyond a doubt that Dan Wells has the gift. His teenage protagonist is as chilling as he is endearing. More John Wayne Cleaver, please.”---F. Paul Wilson, New York Times bestselling author

“The beauty of the prose, mixed with the depth of characterization, gives the haunting, first person narrative a human touch. Regardless of your age or your genre preferences, you will find this story both profound and enthralling.”---Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author

Clever Story With a Very Unique Narrator Character!
By James N Simpson
I am Not a Serial Killer is a great read, the type of genre the book is changes half way through, I don't want to give away which genre it switches to as that would be giving away a substantial part of the plot. Admittedly, at first I thought oh no, the author has obviously just run out of ideas on how to keep the story going but as I read on those thoughts were proved wrong, the change of genre works really, really well.

Basic plot of I Am Not a Serial Killer has John Cleaver having recently finished primary school entering high school for the first time in the small town of Clayton. John whose father bailed years ago and whose mother's parental skills are so bad they drove his sister out of the family home, is not popular at all in school. A target for bullies he hangs around with Max, an equally unpopular kid, not because he enjoys his friendship, but because appearing to have conversations with someone else (Max is a talker) will make the other kids and teachers not notice just how different he is. You see John is always trying to keep the monster behind the wall. The monster is the fact that John is a sociopath who has a list of rules he makes himself follow so as not to start on his natural calling as a serial killer. His mother and aunt run the local mortuary and he is fascinated by dead bodies, since it is the only place he seems to be able to communicate with this mother at all, he is always assisting with the preparation of the town's bodies. He has read every detail of famous serial killers' sprees, so when a murder victim is slashed open in the town laundromat and their organs piled up beside them, John knows straight away this is no one off. John can't help but to become obsessed with profiling this killer and trying to catch him in the act of the kill to study his methods up close.

A very good and unique storyline and a very definitely unique character with John Cleaver. If you liked the learning about behind the scenes mortuary parts of the novel also check out Weepin' Willie by Richard Grayson.

A great dark and twisted thriller
By Daniel E. Larson
A great dark and twisted thriller. Not what I usually read, but it sucked me in and I'm addicted to this series. A little graphic in the morgue but stick through it and it's a great book about a really messed up "hero".

Poetry, humor, horror, oh my
By J. Brown
Short version: I almost didn't read this book, but I'm so happy I did.

Long version. You can scare the crap out of me (Aracnaphobia), and I will love you forever. You can make me bite my nails in terrible suspense (Wait Until Dark, The Village) or throw supernatural at me (Poltergeist) and I will sing with praise. But the moment you do gruesome, the moment you start showing me entrails and organs, my discomfort level shoots through the roof.

And this is why I would not have finished I Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Well's if I had just picked it up off a shelf-because the main character is the son of a woman who owns a mortuary. We get to see him help process a mutilated body very early in the book, pumping fluids in etc., and Wells knows his craft so I was THERE. I'm sure it's not too gruesome for some, but I just have issues with organs. I don't know why. I also have an issue with clowns.

Clowns are, by far, the scariest things around. And this is not because I read the book IT by Stephen King as a wee lad because I didn't. It's because they're painted vessels of evil. End of story. They're perfect examples of the freakazoids that lurk in the uncanny valley.

Anyway, I'd heard Wells read a portion of this book that had all of us in the room crying because we were laughing so hard. So I read on, telling myself I had to at least get to that part. And I am so very happy I did.

I Am Not A Serial Killer is young adult story about a good-hearted teen named John Cleaver who is a sociopath with all the traits shared by serial killers. John's in counseling, but more importantly, he is convinced he can prevent himself from becoming a serial killer by keeping rules he's made for himself like not watching people for too long and complimenting someone when they make him angry. Such rules, he hopes, will keep him from feeding compulsions he won't be able to resist. The problem is a real serial killer has come to town (but unlike any you've seen before). And John may be the only one who can stop him. Will he let go of his rules to save the town? Or will he keep his monster asleep while others die around him?

It's a fascinating situation (without a clown in sight, may the writing gods be praised). And Wells takes the reader on a journey through it that includes mystery, dread, and humor. In the hands of some other author, that would be enough. But Wells does more than entertain us. He gives us things to think about. He gives us great characters to boot-come on, when was the last time you read a book where the hero was a likeable sociopath? And there's poetry in it. You'll love how he used William Blake's Tiger Tiger and Little Lamb. Besides, most of the gruesome is up front anyway.

Read this book. Skim the body processing if you must. But you simply don't want to miss the rest. It was a fabulous read and I recommend it highly.

Inferno, by Ellen Datlow

As stated in her introduction to Inferno, Ellen Datlow asked her favorite authors for stories that would "provide the reader with a frisson of shock, or a moment of dread so powerful it might cause the reader outright physical discomfort; or a sensation of fear so palpable that the reader feels compelled to turn on the bright lights and play music or seek the company of others to dispel the fear."

Mission accomplished. Datlow has produced a collection filled with some of the most powerful voices in the field: Pat Cadigan, Terry Dowling, Jeffrey Ford, Christopher Fowler, Glen Hirshberg, K. W. Jeter, Joyce Carol Oates, and Lucius Shepard, to name a few. Each author approaches fear in a different way, but all of the stories' characters toil within their own hell. Winner of the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Anthology, Inferno will scare the pants off readers and further secure Ellen Datlow's standing as a preeminent editor of modern horror.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Datlow (The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror) makes a solid claim to being the premiere horror editor of her generation with this state-of-the-art anthology of 20 new stories by some of horror fiction's best and brightest. Several outstanding selections feature imperiled children and explore the horrific potential of childhood fears, among them Glen Hirshberg's The Janus Tree, which gives a creepy supernatural spin to a poignant memoir of adolescent angst and alienation, and Stephen Gallagher's Misadventure, in which a young man's near-death experience as a child endows him as an adult with consoling insight into the afterlife. The compilation's variety of approaches and moods is exemplary, ranging from the natural supernaturalism of Laird Barron's cosmic horror tale The Forest, to the unsettling psychological horror of Lucius Shepard's The Ease with Which We Freed the Beast; the metaphysical terrors of Conrad Williams's Perhaps the Last; and the slapstick grotesquerie of K.W. Jeter's black comedy Riding Bitch. If this book can be taken as a gauge of the vitality of imagination in contemporary horror fiction, then the genre is very healthy indeed. (Dec.)

Review

“Datlow makes a solid claim to being the premiere horror editor of her generation.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Inferno

“One good ghost story, one truly effective tale, is usually sufficient to scare the bejesus out of a person. The Dark contains sixteen tales, enough to keep fans tossing and turning and peeking under the bed for a fortnight and then some. Watch your hackles when you read this book; Ms. Datlow and her horrormongers are out to raise them.” ―Dallas Morning News

“With all that being said, I can assure you that this is quite possibly the most literary of all anthologies I have ever read. Datlow brings together the very best of every type of classic horror stories. I cannot recommend this anthology highly enough and I appreciate horror being treated as fine as it has been in this anthology. Buy it, read it, share it.” ―The Fantasy Times

“Fans of horror fiction owe it to themselves to pick up this creepy, stylish anthology.” ―Jeff VanderMeer, SCI FI Weekly

Nice horror stew
By D. Walls
Anthologies like this are about the only place to find horror short stories these days, which is unfortunate because I think scary short stories are pretty awesome. The perfect length to read before turning off the light at night. And reading one right before bed is like dropping a little bit of mental lsd into your dreams.

Ellen Datlow has been doing the horror thing for a couple of decades now. She's edited over 50 anthologies and won a ton of awards for doing so. The point is, if you are gonna pick somebody to take you by the hand and show you what's good in horror short fiction these days, she's the one you wanna pick.

This anthology doesn't have a theme. It's 20 stories that Datlow chose "to showcase the range of subjects imagined by a number of my favorite writers inside and outside the horror field". When I looked through the contents I saw only half a dozen or so authors whose names were familiar to me.

More, Please.
By Tubereuse
I particularly like "Bethany's Wood" by Paul Finch, "Stilled Life" by Pat Cadigan, and "An Apiary of White Bees" by Lee Thomas. Oh, that stories like these have made it into YBFH 2008. I read the Datlow-chosen stories in YBFH 2007 right after reading Inferno and was disappointed; the story by Oates, in particular, seemed misplaced: I'm a fan of the bizarre, and this one seemed pointlessly grotesque instead. But Inferno is everything I look for in modern horror! I think it's Ellen's best book so far.

A fiery collection of horror!
By RIJU GANGULY
I had been an admirer of ghost stories and the "quiet horror" (although I never used to know it under that name) ever since I started reading fiction. Violence, especially if that is described to be taking place in the commonest possible circumstances (e.g. within the four walls of a drab room occupied by a family not that different from mine), or which involves loss & pain to people who can be actually felt for in everyday life (e.g. someone's children or wife getting lost or murdered or tortured) is not preferred by me while trying to acquire that pleasing chill by going through printed words. Perhaps that is not a very literate thing to do, esp. since I have been reading horror for many-many years now. But this collection, often dealing with exactly those issues which I detest, succeeded in moving me and compelling me to read every one of them, often against my own wishes. After reading these stories, I was forced to conclude that the editor has been supremely successful in her objective: giving the readers an idea about how it really might feel while burning in the fires of own hell. I had gone through it during the reading!

The contents are:

1) Riding Bitch by K.W. Jeter
2) Misadventure by Stephen Gallagher
3) The Forest by Laird Barron
4) The Monsters of Heaven by Nathan Ballingrud
5) Inelastic Collisions by Elizabeth Bear
6) The Uninvited by Christopher Fowler
7) 13 o'clock by Mike O'Driscoll
8) Lives by John Grant
9) Ghorla by Mark Samuels
10) Face by Joyce Carol Oates
12) An Apiary of White Bees by Lee Thomas
13) The Keeper by P.D. Cacek
14) Bethany's Wood by Paul Finch
15) The Ease With Which We Freed the Beast by Lucius Shepard
16) Hushabye by Simon Bestwick
17) Perhaps the Last by Conrad Williams
18) Stilled Life by Pat Cadigan
19) The Janus Tree by Glen Hirshberg
20) The Bedroom Light by Jeffrey Ford
21) The Suits at Auderlene by Terry Dowling.

Many of these stories (among which, I would like to draw your attention towards those by Glen Hirshbirg, Lucius Shepard, Paul Finch, Laird Barron and Stephen Gallagher) have later got reprinted into different thematic anthologies and have found their individual (eminently justified) accolades. But I am, nevertheless, determined to knock-off a star from the rating, because that is the least that I can do after burning myself in INFERNO!
