Treason, by Orson Scott Card

Lanik Mueller's birthright as heir to planet Treason's most powerful rulership will never be realized. He is a "rad" -- radical regenerative. A freak among people who can regenerate injured flesh... and trade extra body parts to the Offworld oppressors for iron. For, on a planet without hard metals -- or the means of escape -- iron is power in the race to build a spacecraft.
Iron is the promise of freedom -- which may never be fulfilled as Lanik uncovers a treacherous conspiracy beyond his imagination.
Now charged with a mission of conquest -- and exile -- Lanik devises a bold and dangerous plan... a quest that may finally break the vicious chain of rivalry and bloodshed that enslaves the people of Treason as the Offworld never could.

From Publishers Weekly
After the success in recent years of his mature work (the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning SF diptych Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead and the excellent fantasy, Seventh Son ), the energetic Card returns to his 1979 second novel originally titled A Planet Called Treason . Limiting his rewriting to presentation rather than plot, Card is left with a good story that looks forward to his better work. Arrogant, sophisticated Lanik Mueller, scion of a clan that can regenerate their bodies, learns humility and much else during his exile in "primitive" lands. With his new powers, including the ability to cause earthquakes and drain lakes, he leads his countrymen in revolt against their conquerors. As in his later, better known work, Card provides a colorful dramatization of ethical issues and questions of identity against a backdrop of bizarrely fascinating races from the tree-dwelling Nkumai to the time-manipulating Ku Kuei.

From Library Journal
Cursed by the uncontrollable manifestation of his family's natural gift for self-healing and bodily regeneration, Lanik Mueller begins a planet-wide journey that reveals the mysterious origins of human existence on the planet Treason and leads him to challenge the assumptions of a society based on warfare and greed. This expanded version of A Planet Called Treason exemplifies Card's talent for creating disturbingly compelling, beautifully written stories. JC

An early work in Card's inimitable style.
By frumiousb
Treason shows evidence of many of the concerns that Card would come to have in his later novels-- self-determination, actualization of innate ability, the morality of violent self-defense versus the morality of pacifism, and the destiny of brilliant youths.

Set on a planet where the best radical minds of a generation were exiled without iron, Treason uses science fiction as a background for a thoughtful look at some serious issues.

Treason is clearly an early novel, and has aspects that are too obviously allegorical. In later works, the same allegorical bent will be expanded and the context of the world around the story will become fuller.

Recommended for Card fans. There is nothing to be disappointed in here, and should provide an interesting look at the roots of his later writing. People not already familiar with Card will probably want to begin somewhere else-- Wyrms or the Ender Wiggins books.

Walking the earth, saving the world
By C. E. Stevens
An epic tale combining mystery and fantasy, Treason more than meets expectations--I'd even go so far as to say that it's one of Card's best. Although the storylines are completely different, Card visits moral dilemmas familiar to readers of the Ender series: is genocide an acceptable tradeoff for the salvation of an entire planet? Is the sacrifice of one individual justifiable for the greater good of an entire race? In Ender's Game, Card creates a cold and oppressive cage known as Battle School to confine young Ender. In Treason, Card creates a lush and diverse world for his protagonist Lanik Mueller to explore in his exile. Whereas Ender's growth is largely internal and self-driven, Mueller picks up extraordinary powers while walking the earth, meeting new people and learning new skills. Lanik is frequently forced to ask himself deeper questions about life, sacrifice, and identity, all the while understanding that the more he learns, the more complex and difficult his choices become. He starts the novel alone and a freak; saving his own skin is almost more than he can manage. He ends the novel with terrible powers and the responsibility that comes with them, forced to choose the best way to save a planet hurtling towards destruction and death. Unlike Ender, he is fully aware of the choice he must make, making his decision all the more anguishing and tragic.

Card takes many risks in creating a fantastic world that the reader must simply accept as is--this tale belongs more to the realm of fantasy than pure "science" fiction. Yet the risk pays off, making the reading experience all the more memorable. The reader is drawn in by the nature of the protagonist's grotesque transformation and the beauty of a world that stretches the imagination. The mystery and intrigue surrounding the planet's sudden power shifts keeps the plot moving nicely, and Card creates a strong and believable cast of characters to breathe life into the story, giving it a center and a soul. Finally, Card leaves the reader to ponder Lanik's decision in the face of a nearly impossible choice, in a world characterized not by black and white but by subtle shades of grey.

Treason will probably never garner the attention of a book like Ender's Game, but nevertheless it is an excellent and thought-provoking story. This book is a hidden gem in the canon of modern SF and fantasy literature that will reward the reader who takes the time to unearth it.

A Masterpiece Called Treason
By Hillary Corwin
Not since Ender's Game has a book so successfully denied me my much-needed rest. Treason took me two days to read -- only interrupted by two eight-hour shifts that I refused to call in for, and, even then, it stole my breaks.
Now, while I would like to resent the work itself for exhausting me so, I could never bring myself to hate something so brilliantly constructed, so perfectly woven and so beautifully written. Card's outdone himself this time. A first-person shifting-milieu character piece -- only Card could pull that off. And pull it off, he did. It was, perhaps, the greatest reading experience of my life.
Life, death, fear, discovery, perseverance, deception...all incorporated into a story that shakes the earth at will, makes the hours pass like minutes, and engages the reader's imagination so greatly -- so completely -- that he/she might well radically regenerate a second, maybe even third mind. This book was so damned good that I bought a second to lend to friends.
I have no higher a recommendation. Satisfied?

Good phonics-based spelling, with some excellent extras
By Three Crows
I've used Spelling Workout Level C with both my homeschooled sons. It is simple enough to be used relatively independently. My children are strong readers, and have thrived on the easy format and moved at their own pace to complete each book in the series.

Each of 36 chapters consists of a reading text containing 15-20 selected list words, the spelling rule theme of the chapter, three exercises (one more straightforward, the other two usually puzzles or word games), a proofreading exercise, a short writing prompt, and a list of bonus words. Every fifth chapter is straight review.

Any parent or teacher should place thier child appropriately in the series, so for your information some of the words from each list in Level C include:
Chapter 1 (on syllabication): fast, life, cannot, water, person, quite, forest
Chapter 15 (on ch & wh): wheel, everywhere, chewy, whisper, bench, whether, pinch
Chapter 25 (er, ing, ed): swimmer, cutting, slipped, admitted, beginning, skimmed, shipped
Chapter 35 (homonyms): here, hear, pare, pair, pear, great, grate, tied, tide

My kids enjoy the puzzle exercises, and I particularly like the proofreading practice, which is excellent preparation for editing papers. Our approach is simple: We read the selection together, discuss the rule or topic, then I give a spelling pre-test. My children do a number of exercises based on the number of words they get incorrect. We follow up with a post-test if needed, and move on to the next chapter. Easy.

I don't think Spelling Workout would be the best selection for a struggling or poor speller, as review is somewhat limited, but for an average to accelerated child it is an excellent, easy to use resource.

Wonderful spelling workbook
By J. Leasure
This is the best spelling workbook I have found for my 2nd grader, who is homeschooled. This series of workbooks ties spelling to phonics rules and has activities (like crossword puzzles) that my daughter loves. There is a dictionary in the back of each workbook that includes all of the spelling words. I have tried 3 other spelling workbooks and this is by far the best for us.

great overall spelling curriculum
By Musicmama
I have been using the Spelling Workout series for over 8 years in my homeschooling. I believe that I learned about Spelling Workout from "The Well-Trained Mind", by Susan Wise BauerThe Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home (Third Edition). I love that my students learn editing and proofreading marks as well as how the spelling words are used in sentences and puzzles. They learn that they can proofread their own work. I love the gradual addition of cursive to the options and the valuable spelling "hints".

If the students memorize all of the "hot tips" or "hints" or "pep talks", as they call it in the older books, they will be able to handle almost every spelling issue. The more advanced books even teach Latin roots and how to handle foreign based words like "bureau". I needed a curriculum that teaches spelling by building upon basics and this does it. I also have my kids use "Easy Grammar", which is easier when they can spell!

Second Spring: A Love Story (Family Saga), by Andrew M. Greeley

Father Andrew M. Greeley, one of America's best-loved and most widely read novelists, has delighted readers with his ongoing chronicles of the crazy O'Malleys, a rambunctious but resourceful Irish-American family caught up in the sweep of modern American history. The previous novels in the saga--A Midwinter's Tale, Younger than Springtime, A Christmas Wedding, and September Song--have taken the O'Malleys of Chicago from the aftermath of World War II through the tumultuous upheavals of the sixties. Now, in Second Spring, Charles "Chucky" O'Malley and his growing clan face the promise and pitfalls of the late seventies.

It's 1978 and the whole country, exhausted from the twin traumas of Vietnam and Watergate, seems to be suffering from a massive hangover. Chucky O'Malley knows how the country feels; approaching fifty, he finds himself in the grip of a debilitating midlife crisis. Although he has much to be thankful for, including a loving wife and a thriving career as a professional photographer, he does not feel like a success. He hasn't lost his faith, exactly, but he does feel disillusioned and depressed. As he travels the world, from the Vatican, where a new pope is to be selected, to Jimmy Carter's White House, where an overwhelmed president struggles to find a cure for his nation's malaise, Chucky searches for a way to renew his weary spirit.

Fortunately, he doesn't have to face this challenge alone. With the loving support of his family, and especially his irrepressible and adoring wife, Rosemarie, he just might rediscover his lost hope and optimism in time for a Second Spring. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
Greeley’s irrepressible and fiercely liberal O’Malley family carries on lustily in this sixth chronicle of their adventures. Charles (usually Chuck, often Chucky, and even Chucky Ducky, none of which names he objects to) is a former foreign ambassador under Jack Kennedy, a Ph.D. in economics and a world-famous photographer. Rosemarie, his wife, is a recovered alcoholic, now a successful New Yorker writer, but more important to her, a mom and grandma. Trading chapters, they describe their busy life in Rome in the late 1970s, where Chuck’s role is to photograph the new pope. In 1978, there were three popes: Paul VI died; his successor, John Paul I, also expired, after only a brief period; and John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in centuries, was elected. Greeley’s knowledge of the intrigues and suspense behind the elections produces a graphic firsthand account (he is the author of the nonfiction book The Making of the Popes 1978). After the election, Chuck’s career as a photographer (he refers to himself modestly as a "fast-talking punk from the West Side of Chicago who takes pictures") comes to the fore, as the Art Institute gives him a major show. The show is a success (despite—or because of—the scandal caused by an innocently revealing photo of Rosemarie), but Chuck is assailed by self-doubt, then nearly dies of pneumonia. In a sentimental but poignant scene, a serene, perhaps heavenly lady visits Chuck and reassures him that he is a good man. This is more comfort food for Catholics, though newcomers to the series may be taken aback by Chuck and Rosemarie’s mildly explicit lovemaking.

From Booklist
Greeley, a Roman Catholic priest, is also one of this country's most popular writers of light-romance novels. His books are usually sagas, each one detailing the lives of one or another of the fictional Irish American families that Greeley's fans have come to know and love. In his current series, he chronicles the O'Malleys of Chicago, an irrepressible Irish American clan. Previous novels in the O'Malley saga follow the family from World War II through the 1960; in this installation, Charles "Chucky" O'Malley and his spirited family face the 1970s. Here we find Chucky approaching 50 and stuck in a vicious midlife and spiritual crisis. While O'Malley can count his blessings--an adoring wife, an amazing sex life, a prestigious career, and a large, happy family--he still feels unfulfilled. In addition, he is no longer able to take comfort in his faith. As a photographer of some importance, O'Malley travels the world snapping historical photos and searching for his own happiness. However, it is in his loving family and his devoted wife that he ultimately finds what he has been looking for. In typical Greeley style, this novel is a bit on the corny side; however he has many fans who consume his novels like candy. Kathleen Hughes

insightful look at the Carter Administration
By A Customer
Happily married to his beloved Rosemarie and father to five adult children and three grandchildren that he adores and loves Charles "Chucky" Cronin still worries about the future. He remains a faithful Catholic, but wonders if perhaps the church abandoned its flock. He contemplates whether he is just suffering from a biological occurrence for someone turning fifty or a reaction to continual racial inequality, assassinations, priestly wrongdoing, Viet Nam and Watergate? Rosemary worries about much of the same agenda, but also is concerned with Chucky, who seems to have lost his step.
Chucky, a professional photographer and former ambassador, soon regains much of his sixties and early seventies fervor that put him at odds with presidents. He and Rosemary try to dislodge a church protected pediophile priest. That fails because Cardinal Archbishop Thomas John O'Neill is psychotic and paranoid especially when it comes to protecting one of his own. Chuck and Rosemary have a cause to remove both abominations even as a personal miracle that has not happened to this couple in two decades occurs.
The sixth O'Malley chronicle is an insightful look at the Carter Administration through the eyes of Chucky and Rosemary, alternating chapters. The story line provides a vivid scrutiny while insuring the lead couple feels complete. Chucky suffers from a mid life crisis as he begins to question all he once believed in while Rosemary encourages him to gracefully continue the fight for what both know is right. Andrew Greeley furnishes a delightful charmer that displays how the late 1970s, only twenty-five years ago, feel today like ancient history even to one who lived through it.

Very nice!
By Huntress Reviews
Revisiting the crazy O'Malley clan he recently created, Father Greeley tells us the story of Chuck and his beloved Rosemaire and the events that they were part of in the last years of the seventies.
Chuck has been sent to Vatican city to witness and photograph the election of the new pope. He watches as politics shape the church, then is called to the White House where he meets President Carter and is witness to national crises. However, the national and worldwide events pale compared to the desolation that is in Chuck's heart. A thriving career and beautiful wife just are not enough to satisfy him. Divine intervention alone will restore his joy.
**** Lovingly told, this story will enchant readers familiar with the series, but new readers will most likely be a bit lost. However, new or old, you can not miss or fail to be charmed by Father Greeley's warm writing style that plays out events casually, but still has a profound message. Particularly engaging is the way he has divine figures show up in such a friendly manner.

The General: Irish Mob Boss, by Paul Williams

In a twenty-year career marked by obsessive secrecy, brutality, and meticulous planning, Martin Cahill, a k a, The General, netted over 40 million pounds. His criminal record included assassination, kidnapping, bombings, and one of the world's largest art and gold heists! He was untouchable and fiercely loyal to his gang. Loved by the common man, his personal battle with the police made him a living legend. But Martin Cahill not only refused to respect the police, he refused to pay tribute to the IRA. And unlike the police who had to follow the letter of the law in their battle to bring down Ireland's most wanted, the IRA played by their own rules.

From Publishers Weekly
Irish charm and gangland violence come together in this engrossing biography of Dublin godfather Martin Cahill. Irish journalist Williams recounts Cahill's rise from poverty to infamy as Ireland's most notorious crime boss, dubbed "the General" for his audacious and meticulously planned robberies. Cahill was a brutal thug (he literally crucified one underling he suspected of having crossed him) but also devoted lover (to his wife and her sister), a pillar of the slum communities where he grew up, and, as his fame for his spectacular jewelry and art heists grew, something of a folk hero. Combining thorough research and well-paced storytelling, Williams brings to life Cahill's exploits, his long war of wits with the often inept Irish police, and the clannish underworld where criminal gangs, IRA commandos, Protestant paramilitaries and police officials conducted their battles on weirdly intimate terms. Along the way he paints a picture of Dublin's social transformation in the 1970s and 80s, as an epidemic of heroin and guns, fueled by the conflict in Northern Ireland, brought big-city crime to its formerly safe and sleepy streets. Blending lurid picaresque and off-hand sociological insights, this is a stylish and thoughtful addition to the true-crime canon. Photos.

Williams takes readers along on an incredible ride as he traces the rise and fall of underworld Mob boss and working-class hero Martin Cahill. Rising through the ranks in Ireland, Cahill eventually reaches beyond his native Dublin to include an international network of fences and a lucrative money-laundering scheme based in London and Manchester. Constantly outwitting and humiliating the authorities, Cahill became a legend in the 1980s, his brutality seemingly mitigated by his success and bravado. Acclaimed by the public and reviled by the police, he enjoyed a reputation and a career that could only be curtailed by the IRA. Eventually stepping on the wrong toes, Cahill became a marked man who had finally met his match. Sharing its subject with two Hollywood movies, this riveting true-crime biography truly reads like a piece of fiction. Margaret Flanagan

Martin Cahill -- Prince of Thieves
By S. Zayas
Martin Cahill, a/k/a "The General," was perhaps Ireland's most notorious gangster, a genius criminal who stole millions (in artwork, jewelry and cash) right out from under the noses of the Garda S?och?na(Irish Police.)

Paul Williams, quite adeptly, tells the humorous but ultimately tragic tale of a remorseless thief with a penchant for rather unorthodox sexual activity (he lived and fathered children with both his wife and her sister.) Like the best (or worst) gangsters and criminals memorialized in books and movies, The General's daring, outrageous behavior and wit made him a charming and sometimes even sympathetic subject. But, Williams walks the line between glorifying Cahill and showing him for what he really was, a thief whose sins caught up with him.

Great book on this famous Dublin gangster
By C. Griffith
Paul Williams writes about the life of Martin "the General" Cahill in a way that almost makes Cahill lovable, a late-20th century Robin Hood almost, yet is able to balance this image (that Cahill himself tried to propagate) with the fact that he was a career criminal, even to the point that he would report regularly to receive the dole while making millions illegally. Williams writes of what is known that Cahill did, what Cahill was accused of doing, what Cahill said that he did and was, and what Dubliners said that he did and was. Williams was a reporter throughout the career of the General, and so presents a journalistic tale of Martin Cahill's life that is really a captivating read.

Amazing
By Reema E.
I have seen the movie and i think it's great but reading the book was totally different. In the book you get to see the two sides of the notorious Martin Cahill. Some people thought he was the modern robbinhood, and others a dangerous criminal. Paul Williams brilliantly gives you the inside story in it's true form, excellent book.

From Publishers Weekly
Given the complex world within Asaro's Skolian Empire saga, perhaps it's forgivable that the first third of her second Triad fantasy (after 2004's Schism) explains at tedious length the history of the Ruby Dynasty, a ruling tribe of telepaths who struggle with discord among themselves even as they fight off their dire enemies, the Euban Concord. Readers of this extensive chronicle will happily plunge back into the fray, but newcomers might stumble, feeling much like first-time viewers of a byzantine space soap opera. However, once the action heats up with an assassination attempt that disables the head of the Ruby Dynasty, rapid pacing and gripping suspense whisks away any confusion. Young Soz, an heir to the throne and a military cadet, seizes the book's spotlight with her combination of vulnerability and bravery as she steps up to responsibility. But with so many characters, this tale suffers from a lack of focus. Asaro's saga is a monumental work, but only a more careful honing of the individual novels will make the series masterful. (Dec.)

Before very far into the latest volume concerning the Skolian Empire, unshirted chaos and utter disaster face the Skolia family. Mother has been kidnapped, father is recovering from his ordeal at the hands of the Traders in Schism (2004), the first book of the subseries called Triad, and the Imperator himself is a captive. This leaves Sauscony, 18 years old and a Jaegernaut in training, as the pivotal figure in the action that follows. Both her military skills and her high psionic abilities are called into play, and working with her father, she develops a three-way psionic link (the triad in question), which becomes a crucial weapon against the Traders. Asaro's Skolian saga is now nearly as long and in many ways as compelling as Dune, if not more so, featuring a multitude of stronger female characters. The characters' handling of psionic powers approaches magic, however, and the appended time line is essential for fitting this book into the continuum of the whole. Nonetheless, a certain, intelligent crowd-pleaser. Roland Green

Enough to keep you waiting for the next book...

"The Final Key" is book #2 in a series that precludes "Primary Inversion", the book that first introduced Sauscony Valdoria, heir to the Skolian throne. The first book in this series was "Schism".

Background:

You see, there are essentially 3 civilizations in Asaro's future universe. The Allied Worlds are those established by humans from Earth. The Skolian Empire and the Eubians (the Trader Empire) are remnants of another human civilization (the Raylicon Empire) that left Earth long ago and established a presence in the stars, while the rest of the Earth-bound humans lost this part of their own history. When the Allied humans finally left Earth to explore the universe, they were suprised to find that humans were already there.

Allied humans are much like you and me. Skolians, however, are generally empaths, and their civilization is based on a royal family with exceptionally strong empathetic abilities. They are "psions", who can read emotion almost as well as communicating with words. The Eubians (or Traders) literally derive pleasure from the pain of a psion, who transmits the emotion and amplifies it like an antenna. Some of the Eubians are pretty nasty in their taste for the pain of their Skolian pleasure slaves. A few Eubians, however, aren't so bad.

The Skolian Empire and the Eubian Concord have a nasty history with one another. The caste-like system of the Trader Empire rests on a slave/indentured servant relationship between upper and lower classes. Any psion captured by the traders is immediately enslaved and sold for the purpose of being tortured in order to pleasure his or her captors. Such a culture, of course, is repulsive to the Skolians, and therefore the two cultures don't get along.

How unfortunate it was for humans from the Allied Worlds, full of expectation and curiosity, when they stumbled out to the stars only to find that someone had beaten them there. To top it off, these two advanced civilzations had been at each other's throats for millenia. The Allied humans assumed a role of neutrality, and have stayed that way, even though they do not necessarily condone the Eubian slave-trade.

I became addicted to Asaro's universe when I first read "Primary Inversion", which began at a time long after Soz had graduated from the Academy. "Schism" and "The Final Key" preclude "Primary Inversion" and tell the story of Sauscony Valdoria (or "Soz") when she was training to become a Jag pilot. Jag pilots are an elite fighter group composed entirely of highly empathetic psions. Soz can deal out some serious butt-whoopin' when she needs to, but her personality is more of an INFP for those of you familiar with the Myers-Briggss personality test. Soz is an introverted, intuitive, feeling and perceiving person who is exceptionally intelligent. She is not all touchy-feely, however, as her calculating mind also makes her a great soldier. Thus her personality makes for great character development.

Asaro first wrote a series of exciting books including "Primary Inversion" and "The Radiant Seas" (all about Soz), "Catch the Lighting" (background on Soz's brother Althor), "The Last Hawk" and "Ascendant Sun" (introduction to Soz's other brother Kelric), and "The Moon's Shadow" (about Soz's son) which all take place in and around the Eubian-Skolian war. These books are brilliant and they have led to stories that still need to be completed. These books are some of Asaro's best and much of her writing revolves around these stories.

"Schism" and "The Final Key" are closely related to the above-mentioned books, but they fill in historical background to those books. Asaro has dedicated a lot of time to creating this universe and filling in background information, where books like "Skyfall", "The Quantum Rose", and "Spherical Harmonic" tell stories of other members of the Valdoria family. The Valdorias are a fascinating bunch of people, and Asaro has woven their family history into a very solid series of novels. I have found her map of the Valdoria family tree, conveniently located in the back of each of her books, to be very valuable in sorting out all of the characters. Overall, the background provided in "Schism" and "The Final Key" is invaluable as it provides support for her intricate story network.

In "The Final Key" much of the story is told from Soz's perspective when she is a young adolescent woman coming to terms with her own identity and sexuality. This book finally brings the reader to the point where the Skolian Empire goes to war against the Eubian Concord. The reader finally knows how Soz was born, where her father came from, how her brothers and sisters fit into the story, and how the war started. The reader watches Soz grow from a girl into a woman, and finally Soz has a chance to experience combat.

Books like "Primary Inversion" and "Ascendant Sun" give us some detail about the war and add to further development of Soz and her brothers Althor, Kelric, and Kurj (just a few out of many). There are a few cliff-hanging books at the end of Asaro's timeline that leave her fans wondering what comes next... last I read, Kelric had suffered from some memory loss and was stranded on some backwater planet, Soz got married (a great story how that happened), had some kids, and now her son has achieved a position of royalty, but not like one might expect.

Asaro has created a unique balance between hard sci-fi and genuine story-telling. Many of her novels have a romantic side to them that is sometimes cheesy, probably causing more than one reader to raise an eyebrow, though she is never intrusive with her ideas on love and relationships. Her stories are definitely first rate and many of her books are among the best science fiction written in recent years, combining the elements of science fiction (complex technology, limit-pushing physics, interesting ideas about biological evolution), with stories about real characters with emotion, feeling, and intelligence.

In addition, many of her books could stand alone. In a bin full of Asaro's books, a reader can grab a text at random and begin reading. A logical place to start might be with "Schism", followed by "The Final Key". One might wait for another part of the Triad series, or just jump to "Primary Inversion" and go from there. In any case, all of the Skolian saga books are worth reading.

Amazing book....

Filling in the slight holes of Soz's training and Shannon's knowledge of Lyshroil, this book is a great asset to the series. You see much more of Eldrin in this book as well. You get to see how one of the Ruby Dynasty fathers acts towards their young children. The first bit was a little slow because of the filling in for those who haven't read the first book, but after a bit, it was just pure reading pleasure. I'd recommend reading Schism first, but after reading Schism, this book is a must!

A prequel and a sequel all in one
By lb136
"The Final Key" is not only the sequel to "Schism"; it's also the prequel to "Primary Inversion," the book that launched Ms. Asaro's Skolian Empire series.

Here, Soz is just about finished with her cadet training when the Eubians manage to sabotage the Skolian defenses and create chaos.

A suspenseful and well paced battle scene is the centerpiece of the book, and a suspenseful and excruciating battle with drug addiction serves as a great B story. As is usually the case with Catherine Asaro, she makes her characters seem like real people, and maybe you'll relate to Soz's fears as circumstances force her to assume a role she's not yet qualified to fill, and the struggles of Eldrin to free himself from his addiction.

As a sequel, the book finishes the tale begun in "Schism" very neatly, but as a prequel, some of the suspense is lost, because longtime readers know what will happen to the various Skolians down the line.

Newcomers to the series obviously should not start here, but either with "Primary Inversion" or "Schism." (A time line at the back of the book will guide those new readers.)

Notes and Asides. To Ms. Asaro: can we have more about the Blue Dale Archers, please? To Ms. Asaro's publisher: can we please have the short stories, doubtlessly all published in different places, that are mentioned in the timeline in a one- or two-volume collection? Thanks.

Makers, by Cory Doctorow

From the New York Times bestselling author of Little Brother, a major novel of the booms, busts, and further booms in store for America

Perry and Lester invent things—seashell robots that make toast, Boogie Woogie Elmo dolls that drive cars. They also invent entirely new economic systems, like the “New Work,” a New Deal for the technological era. Barefoot bankers cross the nation, microinvesting in high-tech communal mini-startups like Perry and Lester’s. Together, they transform the country, and Andrea Fleeks, a journo-turned-blogger, is there to document it.

Then it slides into collapse. The New Work bust puts the dot.combomb to shame. Perry and Lester build a network of interactive rides in abandoned Wal-Marts across the land. As their rides, which commemorate the New Work’s glory days, gain in popularity, a rogue Disney executive grows jealous, and convinces the police that Perry and Lester’s 3D printers are being used to run off AK-47s.

Hordes of goths descend on the shantytown built by the New Workers, joining the cult. Lawsuits multiply as venture capitalists take on a new investment strategy: backing litigation against companies like Disney. Lester and Perry’s friendship falls to pieces when Lester gets the ‘fatkins’ treatment, turning him into a sybaritic gigolo.

Then things get really interesting.

Starred Review. In this tour de force, Doctorow (Little Brother) uses the contradictions of two overused SF themes—the decline and fall of America and the boundless optimism of open source/hacker culture—to draw one of the most brilliant reimaginings of the near future since cyberpunk wore out its mirror shades. Perry Gibbons and Lester Banks, typical brilliant geeks in a garage, are trash-hackers who find inspiration in the growing pile of technical junk. Attracting the attention of suits and smart reporter Suzanne Church, the duo soon get involved with cheap and easy 3D printing, a cure for obesity and crowd-sourced theme parks. The result is bitingly realistic and miraculously avoids cliché or predictability. While dates and details occasionally contradict one another, Doctorow's combination of business strategy, brilliant product ideas and laugh-out-loud moments of insight will keep readers powering through this quick-moving tale. Covering the transformation of Kodacell (formerly Kodak and Duracell) into a network of tiny teams, journalist Suzanne Church goes to Florida and the inventors behind it all, Lester and Perry, who have more ideas than they know what to do with. The New Work (i.e., the network) takes off, with a mini-startup in every abandoned strip mall in America. But suddenly, it crashes, and things get really interesting. Lester and Perry build an interactive ride in an abandoned Wal-Mart, a nostalgia trip through their glory days, that catches the eye of a vicious Disney exec—and the old corporate giants fight their last battle against the new economic order. Doctorow’s talent for imagining the near future is astonishing, and his novels keep getting better. His prognostications are unnervingly plausible and completely bizarre, obviously developed from careful observation of what’s going on at the bleeding edge of technology and culture. The characters are simultaneously completely geeky and suave, lovable and flawed. Even the suits, marketing people and lawyers, are interesting. --Regina Schroeder

Remember "The Graduate"? Benjamin, a child of privilege, has no idea what to do with his life. At his graduation party, a colleague of his father's pulls him aside, and says "I have one word for you: plastics."

The rest of the movie isn't about that, of course, but about Benjamin's sexual and romantic exploits. But in some parallel universe, perhaps a different version of "The Graduate" exists, where Benjamin follows his father's colleague's advice, goes into plastics, becomes an inventor, strikes out on his own, and winds up rebelling not against Mrs. Robinson, but Exxon, or GE or IBM.

"Makers" is the closest thing in this universe to that version. It is youthful and exuberant, but also world-weary and wise, and freshly of-the-moment. Part I is a head-spinning avalanche of incident and invention, Part II, a meditation on failed revolutions, Part III the battle plan for a hard-fought, ambiguous, but plausible victory.

The book is many things: let me point out three. One: it is a catalogue of brand-new desirable products. My personal favorite is the lego-block-shaped ice-cubes. I want them so badly. You'll have your own favorites, I am sure. You'd have to go back to "American Psycho" for so many wonderful things to buy on each page. But "Makers" is much hipper: genuine cool versus ironic-cool.

Two: it is a detailed, extremely plausible, and only thinly disguised history of the dot-com bubble and the intellectual property wars since the World Wide Web came into being. It is thus simultaneously about the near future and the recent past. In other words, it is about this minute.

Third: it's the best popular business book I've ever read, better than "The Tipping Point," better than "Freakanomics," better than "The Black Swan."

Finally, you get great value for your dollar. This edition may be a little over four-hundred pages, but the publisher is that marvelous cheapskate Tor. Tightly clustered chapter breaks and a tiny, densely packed font camouflage a much longer book, easily six or seven hundred pages, possibly almost as long as "Under the Dome."

In this case, longer is better.

A Warning and a Review
By LoneStarReader
I won't summarize the plot since so many others have already done that. What I'll offer is a warning: It's apparent that Doctorow knows his science. What he doesn't grasp in this book are characters.

If you're a tech geek, you'll probably enjoy the book. All the bits about gizmos hold ones interest briefly, but after very few pages, I needed more humanity.

Doctorow's characters are as mechanical as his technology. I'm hardpressed to say I liked a single character, let alone can remember any of their names. That's depressing considering the vast amount of time I just committed to reading this book.

Final Analysis:

If you're into hard SF where the characters are secondary to the big idea, you might like this book.

If you need some flesh-and-blood people to populate your fictional worlds, this book isn't for you.

It would be good were it not for the fact that it devolves into a predictable caricature
By Enki
Well... what can I say. I had high hopes for the book from the blurbs. The sad part is I really wanted to like it, and Part I does start out rather well and interesting. Unfortunately, in Parts II and III the novel quickly devolves into a predictable narrative full of stereotypical and bland characters and a rather adolescent anti-authoritarian pitch. Corporations are evil, lawyers are evil, business in general is evil, while narcissistic 'genius' slackers and misunderstood goth kids are of course the downtrodden revolutionaries that are unfairly being persecuted for wanting "to do cool stuff".

What this "cool stuff" actually is, the novel never really does a good job of imagining because all of the supposed inventions, on consideration, fail to live up to their in-narrative hype. While fiction is allowed much leeway, a work dedicated to technology, and one that tries to be so explicit about all of its gadgets, at least ought to provide what it advertises- neat technology. But absent ground breaking ideas, when the narrative started throwing around 'billion dollar' deals, the 'next big thing', the 'next New Deal' etc. my suspension of disbelief utterly collapsed. And no, bloggers don't shape the world, sorry. Considering the actual tech marvels that are currently being cranked out at an incredible pace, the things this book extols as groundbreaking appear laughable, at best something that belongs in a modern version of 19th century Paris "Arcades", or simply modern carnival chachkas.

My greatest disappointment, however, is the fact that the latter part of the book reads like something written by a rather literate teenager or, alternatively, specifically aimed at targeting anti-authoritarian teenagers as its audience: 'Nerds' (I use the term loosely) of course are always misunderstood but do awesome stuff nonetheless because they are awesome, even while the novel's characters in actuality behave like emotionally stunted boring dupes. Suits always want to ruin everything, which is never actually demonstrated but merely concluded at the outset. Predictably, a big evil company, here Disney theme park (that's right the theme park, not the actual company) is the greatest menacing evil known to man, and will resort to anything to retain its... theme park attendance?!? This part made me laugh out loud... in fact this was the only time this book had a funny moment, albeit unintentionally. Otherwise the novel takes itself incredibly seriously to the point of being a painful slog. The evil corp. is of course run by the talentless sociopathic hack who is only missing a white cat and a maniacal laugh to complete the full package. Every character has to have a romantic interest, conflict, resolution, and obligatory sex scene with any member of the opposite sex, 'cause you know, if it's got an outie it must fit with an innie.

Lastly, the book is overly verbose without the actual language itself being interesting. There's nothing wrong with a thorough narrative per se, but it has to be engaging. A perfunctory detailing of scene by scene only makes a novel longer, not better.

Again, my great disappointment with the novel is that it pitches itself as complex and sophisticated story about "the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things" (see dedication), but in actuality it comes off as someone's poorly concocted teenage fantasy about how awesome it would be to live on a commune surrounded by chicks, fiddling around with left over parts while making bucketfuls of money without care or effort, allthewhile throwing around a fair amount of 'righteous' disdain for any and all 'squares'.

Wings to the Kingdom: An Eden Moore Story, by Cherie Priest

The fields at Chickamauga, Georgia--America's oldest national military park--claimed 35,000 casualties during the Civil War. Any good guide will tell you that the grounds are haunted. The battlefield even has its own resident haunt, called Old Green Eyes for his tell-tale luminous gaze. It has long been said that Old Green Eyes intends no harm to those who respect the park. He is no menace, but a guardian of the dead. While he walks, the dead may sleep secure in the knowledge that their rest will be undisturbed. While Old Green Eyes patrols the battlefield, there is nothing to fear, for graves are not robbed and bones are not moved.

But suddenly a different phenomenon starts puzzling and frightening visitors, causing tours to be canceled and rangers to quit their jobs. These new ghosts are no illusions carved out of the low-rolling fog. One by one, the solemn-faced spirits in ragged uniforms show themselves, and one by one, they point a determined arm off into the distance. Why do the soldiers march again, and what has become of their unblinking custodian? The spirits need a go-between, someone who can speak to them, and for them.

Eden Moore is not interested.

But the ghosts aren't taking no for an answer.

From Publishers Weekly
Eden Moore sees dead people. To be more precise, she sees ghosts; and it just so happens that in her hometown of Chickamauga, Ga., ghosts seem to be a dime-a-dozen, especially at the memorial park that was once a battlefield where thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers died in the Civil War. Unexpectedly, regular folk in the county have started seeing ghosts of the fallen soldiers-all pointing off into the distance. Eden isn't keen to get involved in the matter until her demented cousin Malachi (who tried to murder her in 2003's Four and Twenty Black Birds, the first volume in this wonderfully eccentric Southern-gothic series) calls her from the local looney-bin, even more freaked out than usual after catching sight of Old Green Eyes, the local legendary supernatural creature. What is it that connects Old Green Eyes to the pointing ghosts on the battlefield? And why is someone shooting at battlefield visitors? Those questions finally entice Eden to play detective and ask the ghosts what it is they want. Priest has brought to life a spunky mixed-race young woman, who does double duty as an able detective and off-beat metaphysical magnet.

From Booklist
The Civil War battlefield at Chickamauga, Georgia, where thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers died, is the country's oldest national military park. There have long been tales of sighting Old Green Eyes, said to be the guardian of the battle's dead, and now there's a new wrinkle. To wit, sightings of ghosts trying to communicate vocally but ultimately resorting to pointing frustratedly across the battlefield. What do they want? Enter Eden Moore, first introduced in Priest's Four and Twenty Blackbirds (2005), who enlists the aid of a couple of college classmates to try to photograph and record the ghosts. All hell breaks loose as a pair of celebrity ghost hunters shows up, and also a crazed killer shooting at anything that moves on the field. The plot, which begins slowly by setting the stage, builds a roiling crescendo and climaxes in an explosive scene at the top of the tower at the battlefield's edge. The flamboyant mix of ghosts, the preternatural Old Green Eyes, and murder keeps one on edge. Sally Estes

Review

“Priest kills as a stylist. Debut novel? You could have fooled me. Four and Twenty Blackbirds feels like it was written by an author with the assurance and experience of already having many books under her belt . . . . the book has everything going for it and you should definitely pick up a copy to see for yourself.” ―Charles De Lint, Fantasy & Science Fiction on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Breathes fresh life into the suddenly resurgent ‘I see dead people' subgenre of horror fiction. . . . a remarkably assured debut, a creepy modern-day Southern gothic that doesn't rely on cliché but delivers an emotional powerful tale of self-discovery and the supernatural.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

“… There's mystical, sultry appeal in the thick Chattanooga atmosphere and strong characterizations (Eden's tongue is as sharp as the heels of her signature black boots), and a mixed-race heroine lends welcome diversity to a genre well populated with porcelain-complected heroines.” ―Booklist on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“The classic Southern gothic gets an edgy modern makeover in Priest's debut novel . . . . neo-goth chick Eden [is] a heroine for the aging Buffy crowd.” ―Publishers Weekly on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Southern Gothic at its best. An absorbing mystery told with humour and bite.” ―Kelley Armstrong on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Cherie Priest has created a chilling page-turner in her debut novel. Her voice is rich, earthy, soulful, and deliciously southern as she weaves a disturbing yarn like a master! Awesome―gives you goosebumps!” ―L.A. Banks on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Breathlessly readable, palpably atmospheric and compellingly suspenseful, Four and Twenty Blackbirds is a considerable debut. It's written with great control and fluency, and it looks like the start of quite a career.” ―Ramsey Campbell, World Horror Grand Master, on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Spooky and engrossing, this revenge play is as sticky as a salmagundi made from blood and swamp dirt. Priest can write scenes that are jump-out-of-your-skin scary. This is the first installment in what I can only hope will be a long and terrifying friendship.” ―Cory Doctorow on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Fine writing, humor, thrills, real scares, the touch of the occult . . . had me from the first page. I read straight through. An absolutely wonderful debut, and a book not to be missed.” ―Heather Graham, New York Times bestselling author of Haunted, on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Wonderful. Enchanting. Amazing and original fiction that will satisfy that buttery Southern taste, as well as that biting aftertaste of the dark side. I loved it.” ―Joe R. Lansdale on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

“Cherie Priest kicks ass! Four and Twenty Blackbirds is lush, rich, intense, and as dark and dangerous as a gator-ridden swamp.” ―Maggie Shayne on Four and Twenty Blackbirds

More please!
By Gregory Wild-Smith
Priests second novel, a follow-up to her bestselling debut Four & Twenty Blackbirds, will be more accessible to many casual readers without alienating her fans, or horror buffs.

Where the first novel was about the lead character, Eden Moore, and her journey to find the spooky, Florida swamp voodoo, origins of her ancestors, this book is much more about a place - a civil war battlefield - and Eden's quest to find out just what will explain the spooky goings on there.

Characters lead the day, and they are as real as the people you know. No stupid decisions here, they bring up exactly the questions you would have in their situation. They aren't glib wisecracking Buffy clones either.. they are just honest. Characters, combined with Priests writing style, are the strength of this novel.

Priest writes with a clear, flowing, friendly style that leads the reader along like your best buddy taking you around their favorite place. Priest is having fun doing this, and you have fun on the ride she takes you on.

This isn't as complex a story as 4&20, and is a little slower, but it is a fun read, and stands up on its own without much help from the first novel. Some small characters from that first book have larger parts in this, and the large cast helps the novel move rather than slowing it down.

While it would have benefited from another subplot to add extra complexity to the book I would still recommend it as a top notch ghost story that doesn't need to resort to gore and horror to make its point. This is after all about a mystery, and its a great one - especially as it has ghosts, monsters, and realistic characters.

Priests third Eden Moore novel is due in late 2007, with a couple of other works planned in between. This reviewer can't wait for more.

One of my new favorite authors!
By Lupa
My husband gave me this as a gift recently, which earned both him--and the author--bonus points!

This book continues the Eden Grey storyline that Priest introduced us to in Four and Twenty Blackbirds. Eden is a young woman in her twenties now in this new book, and her ability to see and talk with ghosts is once again a key factor in this well-written page-turner. The ghosts in question are the fallen soldiers at the Chickamauga battlefield who, in 2006, have suddenly supplanted local cryptozoological interest Old Green Eyes as the main paranormal attraction. Though reluctant to get involved at first, Eden is drawn into the mystery surrounding these apparations, and the result is yet another wonderful tale.

Again, this isn't one of your bloody, gory, slasher horror stories. Instead, Priest regales us with a detailed tale, punctuated by believable dialogue and a colorful array of characters. Rather than selling us short with cardboard cutouts and a tired, predictable story, she offers one of the toughest books to put down.

I can hardly wait for the next one in the series!

Fantastic work!
By S. Carrington
After her debut novel, "Four & Twenty Blackbirds", Cherie Priest kicked her writing up another notch:

Her ability to describe changing environments with a smug and uncanny familiarity is almost on par with Charles De Lint. The book switches back and forth between horror, thriller, and mystery without loosing beat. The plot is unforgivably fun.

I highly recommend you read this wonderful story.
